Robatron86
Well it works on Tilley Yard South, but has been stripped out on this one. Ah well!
Robatron86
So the first structures for WHM are arriving in the form of dock cranes. I have bought a Dapol Dockside Crane and a Walthers Gantry Crane. They look very similar and you could easily get away with the Dapol crane. But there is a problem. The board is to be extended width ways to depict the cargo ships and the actual harbor so the cranes need to reach over the edge of the board. Sadly the Walthers crane boom is far too short. And that kit was over double the price of the Dapol kit.
DanielB
Hmmm... there's got to be a way to "fix" that?
Robatron86
The obvious and quick fix is to use the Dapol crane. I have no problem with this plan. Maybe modify the other crane to be a stationary crane.
Zomboid
I don't think even the Dapol one would have much of a lifting capacity with the boom at that angle. Either the track wants to be nearer the harbour wall, or the cranes should be, just not straddling a track.
doctor quinn
Langley do a longer boom but it's expensive http://www.langleymodels.co.uk/shop/sh000001.pl?REFPAGE=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2elangleymodels%2eco%2euk%2fshop%2fss000001%2epl%3fpage%3dsearch%26PR%3d%2d1%26TB%3dA%26SS%3dCrane%26ACTION%3dquick%20search&WD=boom&PN=Online_Catalogue_OO_Cranes__Heavy_plant___Road_Machinery___RW1_RW21_29%2ehtml%23aRWboom#aRWboom

The tracks should be closer to the edge. I did contemplate modifying the board to bring the track closer. I shall think about it a bit more.

kamerad47
Looks like you have to make a jib for it !!!!

long island jack
Yep, a refreshing strong IPA 15%, but after a couple you'd wish you'd hadn,t!!
298
Looks like you have to make a jib for it !!!! I'm also building a Dapol crane for a dockside area, and was more concerned about the clearance underneath instead of the jib length- if it proves to look too short I might draw up a new one. NickBrad
Looking good, how hard was it to cut all those sleepers down the middle, then maintain them in a straght line when sticking them to the board?
Robatron86
Not hugely. I took them over the rail and just ran a Stanley (with a fresh blade) down the sleepers. I drew a line on the baseboard and literally held them in place as the glue dried.

Robatron86
So a burst of progress this morning in the form of the dock taking shape. The angled notch I cut to allow the crane to reach over the edge has been filled in so to speak, and a mini baseboard has been built and bolted to the main board to form the bulk of the water area.
298
Are you going to extend the crane rails? I have a similar aesthetic problem with a dock as you'd expect to see the crane be able to reach all of the water area. At least with yours you'd only need a couple of diamonds, I have a turnout in the way of mine.
Robatron86
I was contemplating that very issue today. I think I am going to have to extend them.
Robatron86
Apologies for the poor picture, but this is where I am at present. Road and quay side laying has begun, and I have hired a tug. This is the slightly small for HO Revell kit. I had also extended the travelling crane rails.
