West Highland Line V4, a 1980's West Highland Line layout

More ballasting and initial scenic detailing around Crianlarich completed this week. Point rodding is largely finished, concrete trunking to the western side of the station is next up having been bought this morning.

I want a running session to ensure everything still functions properly. If it does then I need to start with the surrounding hills and backscene.

Great work! Your layout is really coming together nicely.

Not only have you captured the WHL ballast nicely, but the loco shed is looking good too.

Mal

Love your pictures Mal, are they available to view anywhere? They are towards the end of my chosen era but make great sources of reference.

37011 did not last long after you photographed it, it was withdrawn in 1987 following a collision in January of that year. Also evident are Schoma trolley DX 68100 at its home base, I use the Bachmann OWB as an imitation of this and a tamper. I have the undersized Bachmann tamper model which is currently out of service because I took it apart to fit crew in the cab and cannot get the electrical bits to re-connect! On the basis that I will have to pay someone to put it back together, I might as well get them to add lights to the model at the same time.

Thanks. They are my own photos, I haven't uploaded them on to Flickr. I simply post them from here on RMWeb from time to time.

They are mostly from 1981 to 1986 when I used to travel to Scotland every year.

Pushing on with the southern approach to Crianlarich where the embankment is being extended in small, bite size chunks which allows the glue holding the ballast in place the chance to dry. Running trains shows everything continues to work well.

I have not started work on the surrounding scenery because it makes sense to paint the backscene first. Before I am able to do this I must honour a commitment to my wife where I promised not to paint my railway before I paint the bathroom. It's a pain but I am guilty of having avoided the bathroom for too long!

Hang the painting, more running to test the newly ballasted trackwork is required.

I have painted the bathroom which means I can get on with Crianlarich. I have glued the polystyrene in place that forms the southern hills, made an initial attempt at the mountains backscene and added a partially built cottage to the north eastern side of the station.

First attempt at a backscene with emulsion paints. This is intended to be simple, I am not an artist.

Today must be Sunday 18th September 1983 because it is the only day that 37108 was the train loco for the Edinburgh to Oban adexs. The train is pictured at Crianlarich on its return as 1Z19, 1530 Oban to Edinburgh.

The new coaches are something of an extravagance but they enable me to recreate a small piece of history. The pictures include Bachmann's new DCC DBSO and Oxford Rail's Mk3's which I intend re-numbering with appropriate SC numbers. I will also add light weathering to the rake and close couple them. I might also attempt to add DCC lighting to the Mk3's to compliment that in the DBSO. The Bachmann DBSO is a superb model, the only negative thing I can say about it is that it highlights the frustrating errors found on the Oxford Rail Mk3's!

Continuing on with the scenery at Crianlarich, I have now cut and fixed the polystyrene used to form hills to the south of the station. Later today I intend adding plaster bandage which, once dry, will be painted and finally covered in scenic material.

More scenic material has been added to the south of the shed area. The area to the left has been recycled from WHL 3!

The WHL was not exclusively class 37's in the early 1980's with 27's making occasional appearances. 27032 arrives with a freight from Oban bound for Mossend whilst ex works 27041 lurks in the background.

For some reason I have been worrying about applying the plaster bandage to the hills. I faced up and started work on Saturday, by last night I had made progress to the extent that virtually all bandage has been laid, 75% of the area has been painted and an initial layer of flock added. In addition to extending the backscene northwards, trees, bushes and more flock will also be added.

37022 waits departure with the up sleeper, the newly plastered bandage almost looks like snow

More great progress and I found another pic of 37022.  Departing Glasgow QS.

I do have a liking for steam heat 37s on the WHL as most of my spotting in Scotland was in the early 1980s.

attachicon.gif37022 at Glasgow QS.jpg

In later years, steam heat coaches always seemed to be losing most  of the steam through leaky pipes. About time someone produced a unit to fit into model Mk1s to replicate that.

The hills at the southern end of Crianlarich are now covered in flock. Gradually I am adding bushes and trees to build up the height and density of the area. I am waiting for a drill to enable the new station lights to be fitted. Once these are fitted I can secure the station in its final position and finish the ballasting which I hope will cover to crude cutting of the platform edges. In the meantime I am slowly adding the platform detail. Trains continue to run, the empty Alcan hoppers are the last train to pass through Crianlarich with 37264 the train loco today.

Wonderful modelling I hope I can do the other Highland line as much justice...

The Aquarious road rail Landrover...Aquarious wasn't founded until 1999,  and the 110 body shape was only introduced 1983, so that's pushing it a bit for your era as well.. Sorry

Thanks for the positive comment. The Landrover is an 'E' registration dating it to 1990. Not my timescale but it's yellow and says 'British Rail' on the side which makes it close enough for me!

A frustrating week spent mostly getting over an unpleasant virus which has meant little work on WHL4. I did manage a bit of running and preparatory work for the scenic area at the northern end of Crianlarich. I have spent time thinking about signalling but will make a separate thread about this.

Not much done of late but hopefully the arrival of 3 custom built signals for Crianlarich will spur me back to life. The signals will be electronially operated once I work out how to connect the servos to control them and have been built by fellow RM Webber Stephen Freeman. I also received drills this morning that will enable me to create the size holes necessary for to fit the working station lights.

One of my top priorities for WHL 4 are working signals. My choice of Megapoints controller was largely down to Dave Fenton's assertion that this was a routine function for the controllers and having automated several signals, I am happy to vouch for Dave's claim. What is less straighforward is alignment of the servo such that the signal control wire moves in a linear fashion to actuate the signals, doubly so when you are trying to achieve this led on your back under a baseboard! However once correct alignment is achieved, signal control is, to quote the man, a breeze.

I have managed to complete the automation of the 4 single bracket signals at Crianlarich and have been running trains to test them out. I am pleased with the results and when I get around to working out Youtube I will post some video of them in operation. Until then the following pictures show the passing of trains at Crianlarich.
