sir douglas
The first board was taken down as its done for now, the boards moved along and the fourth board put up but before that the packers were put in behind the dowels. cork is all laid on the third board and can start that on the fourth overall view showing boards 2 to 4 board 2, ive been having trouble getting the tracks to line up properly over the join but its sorted now. the cork has been relaid and the track on the right can be relaid after that board 3, all cork laid and centre lines marked, just need the 2 points made to go on it board 4, still completely bare. next will be the clips front and back Edited August 15, 2019 by sir douglas 3
sir douglas
Forgot to take photos last night but good progress is being made. The length of track on the platform road has been relaid but i havent gone any further until i know the curve alignments to he point at the other end. The second point has been made by Mark and Last night i soldered on the dropper wires to it and glued down the layers of packing paper. paper templates were made and lots of scribbling done on board 4 to sort out the track alignments as weve got points that are different to what i did the templot plan with. i think ive got it about right and can lay the cork. On sunday i continued working on the layout during the open day, laying cork down the siding on board 4 and doing a bit of wiring. I had one of my locos and some wagons moving up and down boards 2 & 3 on the platform road using a temporary power supply clipped on from my own layout controller, since there are 4 sets of dropper wires on board i put on the bus wires underneath. I dont think we will need to think about electrical sections for now, if i do want to then the wire can just be cut from the bus and fed to the panel into a switch but all the layout is going onto the bus for testing. 1 mistake though is that i forgot about the point motor so the left hand end of the bus wire will have be cut to get the motor in. short video of my manning wardle running through the other way on the first point. all the background noise is people talking and other layouts running such as the fiddleyard of one in the background. i chose my MW and some wagons to look like a contractor train since the layout is under construction
sir douglas
The second point was laid this morning after soldering on the little brass tab with a hole in it to the tie bar. Now that the track alignments are decided i have started laying the cork down the platform road on board 4. Under the weights are the second point on board 3 and cork on board 4, i made some paper point templates to help me arrange the track with the point down, a short section was cut to go inbetween it and the board join to board 2 though its not stuck down as it doesnt yet have dropper wires and i couldnt put the rail end screws in because i forgot to take my drill bits
sir douglas
more track and cork laid on Friday and Last night. On board 3, the track from point 2 up to the board end for the front siding was glued in on Friday, last night it was soldered to the screws and the platform road up to the board end was glued down. On board 4, the cork was laid up to the board end on the platform road. i can now take down board 2, move 3 & 4 along to put up board 5. its looking like a time is coming soon that i will have to pause track laying while i wait for the points to be built. i'm told that point 3 has been started but i dont know anything of points 4 & 5 which i may have to take on myself to get them done but i didnt volunteer to build any point initially because of my lack of confidence in being able to do it.
sir douglas
ive just found out that there is a survivor of the same type of NB station building as Eyemouth in Cardrona, near Peebles https://www.flickr.com/photos/cessna152towser/3915881671 http://disused-stations.org.uk/c/cardrona/index.shtml

sir douglas
all the cork now laid, the track on the front siding is done and the platform road is laid as far as the currently none existent point which a little bit extra length to cut back if needed. while i havent got the third point so i cant lay the other siding from theat end i can lay half of it from this end
sir douglas
Many months ago i mentioned my intention to make the station building with lasercut MDF, i was able to do this with the help of steve (Enginelane) and the laser cutting machine available in Wakefield, while he uses it to make the building faces for the club american o gauge layout now named Prime Cereal. first attempts didnt work and we didnt know if it was the settings in my CAD file or the machine but after being out of action for a while under maintenance, and the other day on Wednesday my file has worked first time without issue. i now have the parts at home and working on them. The parts laid out, Starting top left going down; floor, back, front frame, front second layer with doors and windows in. top middle left end and right end (as looking at it from the front). On the right are 2 inside strengtheners. Across the bottom are the door and window parts for the ends all the parts except for floor and back now shown glued together. the front inner layer has been scribed for the planking before the frame went on and styrene strips have been glued onto the ends to bring the embossed brick sheet flush with the frame when that goes on. the ends have the brick sheet on with styrene sills and lintels before it all goes together. the sash windows on the left end are in 2 layers. the window on the right end is just 1 layer but the door is 3 layers: frame and top window, then the door and then the panel the inside of the front showing the offcuts glued to the back for the door panels. the discolouration is not just the burning of the laser but a residue also left behind by it which can be sticky while fresh but quickly soaks in and dries up Edited October 5, 2019 by sir douglas 4
sir douglas
had a little runnign session last night along the front siding with my own controller rigged up, Mark brought down his second D class he is building for a test run and i had a test run of my own loco un related to the layout

sir douglas
The last 2 points to be made were going to be done by a club member that volunteered months ago but never got around to it so last Monday i asked for them and got them both done in 4 days, on the left is point 3 done over a weel ago by another member and i just had to finish it off with the wires. Middle and right are points 4 & 5 that make the station cross over While point 3 is being processed to fit into its place, 4 & 5 were test fitted in place but for some reason the angles dont line up. the ruler on the left is lined up with point 3, and the point 4 with the ruler. point 5 is lined up with the plain track at either end, all the centre lines were marked on with template drawn from point 2 which is the same as these but 4 & 5 dont line up. so re aligning and cork re-laying to do current state of the building 7
sir douglas
Point 3 finished and stuck down, the gap between the right hand end and the board join wasnt as big as i thought. i cut back the rail excess while thinking of putting in an inch of fexi into the gap but instead had to solder in extensions, the excess length of the frog rails was just trimmed back to the board join. it helps having sleepers and bits of rail kept after cutting them off. the main problem here was arranging the sleepers so the interlace and spacing looked right which had to be comprimised by cutting one of the sleepers over the board join The alignment problem has been worked out and both crossover points are now in. no cork needed relaying but the S bend in the platform road track leading up to the points had to be slewed a bit and an extension will be soldered on before glueing it back down. points 4 (left) and 5 (right) glued down with the little bit to meet up to the board join on the right.
sir douglas
Quite annoyed at myself today, i went in this morning to mainly do all the remaining track soldering such as rail end screws and dropper wires since all the track is now in but i forgot the iron, so all i could was glue in the final piece of track 3
sir douglas
got most of the remaining soldering done on Friday but on monday i forgot the iron again so instead did some prep work for our exhibition. though i did remember to take a photo

sir douglas
the track wiring to the bus has been done on boards 4&5 and a start was made today on redoing board 2 which have done a few months ago but it was shoddy boards 3 to 5 will be at our exhibition this weekend as a demonstration. i have library duties to attend to (the books and magazines stand in the corridor), Mark will be with the layout most of the time but i will be there for a few hours across the weekend https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/148052-wakefield-rms-2019/ https://www.wakefieldrms.org/exhibition/ 1
sir douglas
The originall idea for the roof didnt work out but what cam after has turned out much better. i was going to make up a mdf frame from the laser cutting off cuts and glue them otgether with blocks of firework sticks, but the joins wouldnt stay together and the mdf snapped easily. the roof and canopy would be as one piece and removable fromt he building Next would be a ply base to build onto, so the 2 interior supports would have the tips cut off a base pice of 5mm ply with 5 triangles of ply to spport the roof, the ends ones being just inside the ends of the building. the roof pieces are of some other 2mm mdf just because i currently dont have any 2mm ply and its quick and easy to cut with a knife. from the under side making up a triangluer louvred vent on the eastern end of the roof 5
sir douglas
2 photos from today. i am on the magazine stand most of the time but Mark (shez) is on the layout demo and weve got a controller rigged up to run his new 0-4-4 and 2 carriages up and down the platform road. because of the wiring which has no sections and all track is live, the 2 locos not being run are sat on black electrical tape on 1 rail each

Shez
I think Sam should also add a picture of his lovely little Peckett loco which won the locomotive trophy. Thanks to all those who came and had a chat and showed so much interest in the project over the weekend. I came away with the impression that it had really been worth taking the boards down and getting something running. Lots of interest in Sams baseboard design, the laser cut detail on the station building and the NBR stock we had on show. I only hope that I have not passed on my throat infection to anyone. By last night I had completely lost my voice!
sir douglas
Its not relevant to the layout and ive already posted it in my own thread

enginelane
I think it stands a very good chance of being finished to at least a first level and then the extra detailing etc that comes after a layout had had its first full exhibition
