And to celebrate the 1000th reply on this thread I’ve finally had a play with my static grass applicator

I think I may need a little more practice but I was keen to get some on the layout

Pretty damn good for a first attempt mate, I can't see anything wrong with it.

I really like how you've got different shades blending into each other, it looks much more believable than just a carpet of one colour.

Thanks Al

I’ve used three colours, each colour a different length

2mm Autumn first followed by 4mm Summer then a patchy layer of 6mm Dead Grass

Looks good, man.

Or would 'Good on you, mate' be more appropriate?

I’m happy to accept either, thank you :)

I like the black and white pics Chris, very atmospheric :-)

Thanks Steve

I think black and white photos better suit the period being modelled.....and also hides a multitude of sins

Just applied the second layer so it looks less like a snooker table cloth

1st layer was 2mm Autumn, this second layer is 4mm Summer

Tomorrow I’ll go over it again with a patchy 4mm and 6mm Dead Grass

I also plan on building up the baseboard behind the platform so I can grass it and have some foliage behind the platform fencing.

And where'd you get your applicator? I've been using a tupperware tub with a sock over it and a hairdryer for about two years.

Fascinating!

And what do you use for your static grass?

I’ve used a WWS applicator

War World Scenics had a 20% off sale in September so I took advantage of the sale and got the Pro applicator kit with a selection of static grass

I’ve applied the 4 & 6mm dead grass, as patchy as my OCD would allow

I’ve tried to make it at uneven as possible, it’s supposed to be wild and unkempt so I didn’t want a flat and level cricket pitch effect

Needs to be left for the glue to dry (hence the white spots) then I can remove the excess and tidy it up

I doesn’t half make a mess though, I’ve got just as much grass on the floor as I have on the layout

That looks really good, even in close-up. Nice job Chris.

I use WWS stuff as well.  I mix their 2mm patchy grass with 4mm Woodland scenics mid-green.

Al.

Thanks Al

That means a lot coming from yourself especially considering your modelling expertage ;)

Do you hoover up the loose stuff with a pop sock over the pipe, Chris?

I just use my Ryobi cordless handheld and that seems to do the trick as long as I don’t use it for anything else first
