We were without Planet Rock for a period, but by chance I had too rescan the radio in the car and when it finished, up came Planet Rock, so when I got home,  I did all of those radios as well and messaged all the other listeners that I knew. So I would suggest a rescan.

I'll certainly give it a go once I get the adaptor plugged into the back of the "stereo" and work out how to fit an aerial that does not look like a dog's breakfast :)

A couple of years ago there was a big reorganization of DAB and part of that was the loss of planet rock from some areas, notably East Anglia in my case. I have a caravan there and whenever I'm there used to have PR on constantly.

Not over keen in Absolute but it would do at a push or Heart 80s but that does tend to repeat itself a lot.

When it was announced that planet rock was going back into East Anglia I was well chuffed, except the signal dies out at the end of the road, AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!

I can just get it on the car radio with very precise positioning at the back of the caravan!

For quite some time I alternated between Planet Rock and BBC 4-extra, I like the comedy slots on that, with The Navy Lark, Tony Hancock etc, and the crime plays; Sherlock Holmes, Paul temple, Lord Peter Wimsey etc.

I haven't investigated Internet radio, but I'm told there's just about anything you might want out there.

If you are a fan of Prog, one Internet source I HAVE found is "Morow":  https://www.morow.com/#stream-auto  Constant flow of Prog rock; no DJs, no adverts.  Bliss!

Cheers, Dave.

I've been listening to Radio Paradise as one of my main sources or music radio, for quite a few years now.

This link may or may not work for you, but it should lead to the station's continuously running playlist history.

Hopefully it should demonstrate the diversity and eclectic range of music broadcast.

From classic rock to prog, reggae, soul, blues, folk, contemporary, indie, electronic, Latin, Americana..........

Radio Paradise music playlist.

Same here.  And when I fancy a change, I switch to JBRadio2, which used to be Jukebox Radio.

Round the country there is a network of community radio stations   which are available in their broadcasting area  on FM but also on the internet. Here in East Lothian we have two on FM but there are many more on the internet from not too far away.

The presenters on at least one of them are amateurs including secondary school kids but not only do they provide a radio service locally but based on a personal story they give people who through personal problems have been cast aside by employers a chance to show what they can do.

Please support these stations. My son was given a chance last year and it's the best thing that's happened to him

Sorry if I'm biased.

Slightly confused re Planet Rock as according to their web site

"We've expanded our coverage area in South West England, South Wales, East Anglia, Kent and North East Scotland" so why are posters saying it cannot be received in East Anglia any longer when the opposite should be the case - a rescan needed?

It does now work right across Norfolk until about half a mile from my caravan, which is right on the coast, whereas it used to fade out a few miles east of Kings Lynn.

Before the Bauer take over it was loud and clear right to the coast.

Please help me find a radio station I can listen too,  I used to listen to Radio 2 but the music is now so crap I cant bear to tune in, most singers seem to be constipated and trying to squeeze one out while singing! I used to like Radcliffe and McConie  on 6 Music but having now shifted to weekends I have to put up with Shawn Keaveny, and after giving it a try have had to give up on this too as he just spout rubbish.

I know there are dedicated stations for decades or genre but these are just music and I do like some intelligent chat between music, and also don’t want to be stuck in some music bracket as I do like some variation..

Hi......

I can empathise with you wholeheartedly......I found this ( and it may be on here already so sorry if it is).....search any country you wish......having lived in Manly, near Sydney as a bubber....I have a great affinity to ' a land down under',,,,,ao listen to some of the stations based there.... UK based link but click on the flag of your choice.....or select 'more countries'

I used to listen to Luxembourg and Caroline except on Sunday afternoons when Alan Freeman was on with Pick of the Pops which my father produced. That was a long time ago and I hate modern pop music or whatever it is being called this week so now stick to Chris Country which is on DAB in many areas and on the Internet everywhere.

This is the main reason I gave up on the mainstream radio stations.

A professional musician friend of mine refers to it as triple-A noise. Autotuned Aural Atrocity.

I still find a lot to enjoy on R2 although I mainly listen in the evenings.

Cerys Mathews blues and roots show - always good, and she seriously knows her stuff.

Jamie Cullum jazz - excellent and informative; he's hopelessly enthusiastic which comes across.

Mark radcliffe's folk show - although he's been unwell lately, more power to him.

Johnny on sunday afternoons - essential!

Jo Whiley's back in a more sensible evening slot now - it was silly to move her to drive-time. I find her

a very good broadcaster, always makes her listeners feel part of the show.

I've even started investigating some more modern country thanks Whispering Bob - Casey Musgraves and so on.

Where R2 falls down, I think, is that there isn't really any show that showcases anything new and/or just a tiny bit challenging.

I have now heard The Fall on R2, though, so there's hope.

Surely R1 is for the new artists and stuff, R2 is for the older established artists who occasionally do bring out new stuff.  I remember the demise of the pirates and the birth of R1 which then was playing the stuff that is now on R2.....it's an age thing!

As the OP doesn't really seem all that keen on music, I'd suggest he tries Radios 4 and 4Extra.  There is some music (Desert Island Disks and a few others, eg Dum de dum de dum de dum, dum de dum de dum dum), some really good drama, and some decent comedy (as long as it's the old stuff).  As an added bonus, if you suffer from insomnia I find that at my age these stations have the added advantage of lulling one off to sleep if left on for too long.

Why not try your local community radio station ? (Yes I know - if you have one, obviously)  I live in Beverley, East Yorkshire where we have Beverley FM.  Some of the presenters are ex pros but most are, like me, local people who love music and are quite knowledgeable on their particular subject.    We have specialist programmes every evening including from folk to reggae; from classical to jazz; and from rock and roll to show songs.  I do a programme every Sunday at 5pm where I can (and do) play literally anything.  I have followed Jimi Hendrix with Mrs Mills, and the full 11.3/4 minutes of the William Tell Overture with It's 'orrible being in love when you're 8.1/2.

Beverley FM is available on the internet www.beverleyfm.com or on an app on smartphones.  Or 107.8FM if you happen to live near me.  Give us a try then come and visit Beverley - it's rather nice.

  • 2 weeks later...

My own radio listening is varied: Radio 4 for The Archers, the 18:30 comedies, and news/political debate; Radio 5 for the football and rubgy league on an evening and weekend; Absolute Radio '90s sometimes during the day (reflective of my age, although I don't like the adverts); with the occasional dip into the BBC World Service when I fancy a change of scene.

Just out of interest, has anyone tried the new classical station Scala, which launched this week? I've listened for a couple spells and have enjoyed it. Some big names are on board, notably Simon Mayo, and it has had a lot of publicity in the press. Worth a listen if you even have just a passing interest in 'classical' music.

I used to love nodding off to the BBC World Service, even as a kid!  Last time I tuned in though it had changed dramatically - much more noisy and urgent sounding, with seemingly pointless instrumental "stings" and what seemed to be an ongoing microphone relay race between three or four presenters, all "actually" somewhere "at this point in time!"  I had to switch off, and haven't listened since, it reminded me of "The Day Today" or "Brass-eye" except without the humour.

If anyone knows of a station that still sounds like the World Service used to I'd love to hear from them too!

Talking of radio stations, I try to listen to the new classical station Scala but my smart speaker keeps not understanding or playing something else.  There is a Skala radio from Bosnia just to confuse matters......

Back in the 'Olden Days' when DAB first arrived we had real choice like The Storm and The Arrow - but it has all been dumbed down now with the closure of The Storm and The Arrow becoming just music streaming without DJs.

Planet Rock was OK to start with but now it is in mono with bandwidth that makes Medium Wave sound like good quality with pretty useless DJs and much reduced coverage and being on a multiplex that my car radio can't receive it is just pointless. Back to playing MP3s now for me I think.

I suspect that most of the stations that have closed or economised "Because no one listens" like 3C country and the Saga stations have just failed to find out how big their audience actually was - my dad's radio is getting very dusty now through lack of use.

I wish you luck in finding a broadcast station but I suspect you will be disappointed until there is a bit of a shakeup in the industry. Someone has obviously done some market research to find out what people like to listen to and has failed to contact anyone who was not completely vacuous.

I am really into music, I want to listen to a DJ who knows what they are talking about too. I have listened to Paradise Radio which is getting close to the sort of music I like. I love the Beatles, Velvet Underground Blondie, Johnny Cash, Penguin Café Orchestra and quite a bit in between.

Another US radio station with a very eclectic mix of non-pop music, is KEXP.

Can be found on internet radio.

KEXP also have lots of YouTube videos of studio sessions performed by all sorts of artists and bands, mostly contemporary and definitely non-pop.

Other musical genres feature too.

Mind numbing radio is unfortunately increasing, anyone who tunes into a Global owned station (Capital, Heart, Smooth)  for any chance of comments by the presenter on local happenings will find local programming restricted to drive time only if it exists at all (from April 8 in the case of Capital) All three will have national breakfast shows and drivetime will be merged to reduce the overall number (Smooth will be entirely national) .

I previously mentioned my local commercial station was not owned by Global or Bauer - that ended last week as its owners (UKRD) got purchased by Bauer.
