I just wonder if it would be nicer in stone as I think it's the fact that it's in red brick that makes it look so bad. It's a 19thC interpretation of Gothic and it's a bit too tall and a bit too narrow and as such it just fails. I never thought for one moment that you were inferring the worship of God was the offensive thing about it. I need to remember that Tricky's layout is an artistic sketch of Tewkesbury rather than a scale model of Tewkesbury shed. Given the orientation of the shed I would never have thought that the view wasn't south and looking south from station street at a height of around 20- 50 feet puts that monster right in view which is why I mentioned it. Regards Lez. I have rather confused matters with the orientation of the engine shed!

Popular Post Tricky
At last, I’ve finished the first two low relief structures and fitted them in place. To hide the curved sky panel edge, I’m going to make a bridge, also on the curve and stick it over the said panel. This will carry on a little way behind these buildings, hence they’re set a little way away from the sky panel. The lantern turned out ok, all scratch built from ply, with a brass finial and acrylic glazing. As mentioned previously the wooden battens are to take a timber platform. 24 9
Popular Post Tricky
As well as having two coaches and a half cab on my bench, I’ve also made a start on the little Manning Wardle. I’ve decided to base it on ‘Bauxite’ preserved at the NRM. I’m very taken with the care-worn black livery. I’ve also copied the heavy steel/timber sandwich dumb buffers with my own sandwich of brass offcuts with 0.8mm brass rod bolts and timber blocks. I’m hoping somehow to replicate the major splits and cracks of the original timber blocks on ‘Bauxite’. There are some small cracks already - maybe dry out the timber on the radiator in the workshop to make them crack some more…? A solid start and enjoying the build so far. Will be fun squeezing in a gearbox and motor! 16
Ian Smith
I always have to have a wry smile when people modelling 4mm and above “complain” about trying to find room in their locos for motors and/or gearboxes - modelling 2mm finescale as I do with open cabbed tank engines I can only dream of the cavernous space you guys have Ian 3 1

Popular Post Tricky
Made some more progress on the mill building. I’ve painted the brickwork and picked out the very attractive blues and whites. I will detail paint the red bricks some more before adding paper ‘stone’ overlays to the window arches and string courses. Plus of course, windows and ancillary details. 15
Popular Post Tricky
It’s been a little while but I got round to a bit more work on the mill. I’ve fitted the window frames but they have yet to be glazed. All basic architecture is finished. I will now turn my attention to the doors and other mill paraphernalia on the front elevation. 16

I never apply just one colour straight from the pot and always have two or three mixed around on an old tin lid. The best guess I can offer is some mid brick shades and dark orange in Humbrol, followed by acrylics in sienna and buff shades. Sorry I can’t be more specific but I haven’t yet seemed to arrive at a fixed ‘brick formula’ - it’s just what comes to hand! The plus point to this is that it avoids all the buildings in the scene looking identical. 3

Thanks, that's fair enough! Exactly what I do actually - was just curious if I might have been missing a trick! The orange is key for me. Ive seen people start with Humbrol brick red and Halfords primer but they are both quite maroon. BR bauxite might actually be a useful shade in the armoury. sb67
That mill is looking superb! I'm really envious of the look of the brickwork, I really struggle with that. I get what you mean about the orange, next building I do I'll have to try using it. I usually start with a 'brick red' base and never get it to look right. RMweb Gold lezz01 Posted December 14, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 14, 2021 Best thing that could happen to the building is that it could be made into flats. I think that way it would at least be saved from further decay. Regards Lez.

Popular Post Tricky
It is with some sadness I announce that what progress was slowly being made on ‘Tewkesbury’ has had to take an indefinite pause. The layout has had to be placed in storage as I simply ran out of room in the workshop. I did, however, remove the buildings from the baseboard before storing so at least I can work on those, plus motive power and rolling stock. I truly hope that at some point it can be raised Phoenix-like from the basement…! 1
Popular Post Tricky
Big News!! After a bit of a light-bulb moment, I suddenly realised that it wasn’t right that Tewks should be left languishing in the cold, dark depths of my storage under-croft so this morning I convinced myself I could make room for it once more in the workshop and went ahead and dug it out. So here it is! I have to say I have renewed enthusiasm to get it finished and maybe even exhibit it - this time without radio control, but good old DCC!! The curved backscene is still in store as I can’t quite get to it yet and it will need repainting anyway. The overall condition is quite good although the fascia will need painting again. In the meantime I will continue work on the buildings. I will endeavour to post progress updates on here…. 20
Tricky
True to my word, I spent a bit of time in Tewks this morning - I just hope I can keep it up! So the first job was to check everything still works electrically, and surprisingly it wasn’t too bad. A couple of loose wires and possibly a dodgy tortoise but apart from that all sound. I gave the rail tops a good clean as well so it feels like it really is under way! One slightly odd thing - any ideas why the controller doesn’t work? Definitely power to the rails…?
RMweb Premium t-b-g Posted September 5, 2023 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 5, 2023 I am so pleased to see this project up and running again. It is a delightful little scene. Perhaps an entry into the small layout competition at Stafford next year might encourage you to stick with it? 2
