w124bob
Surprised me, but according to the Derby Sulzers site it went new to Eastfield in May 1966 before heading to the Liverpool divsion in August 1968. The picture is undated but that narrows it down https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3729980 it's the only picture I've come across of a cl 25 at Mallaig, lets hope it was a summer working.
RMweb Gold slow8dirty Posted September 27, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 27, 2019 Thanks for posting, first I've seen in green, The West Highland Lines Post Beeching has a picture of 25109 at Mallaig cited as June 1980. The caption states May or November were the usual periods for them to appear.
RMweb Premium 03060 Posted November 26, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 26, 2019 Tom Noble's 'The West Highland Extension' has a photo of a blue 25 on Glenfinnan viaduct heading for Mallaig, unfortunately the number is not stated and the front 3/4 view prevents identification. The date is stated as 5th Aug 1978 on a SRPS railtour named Lothian Coast Express. Regards, Ian.
RMweb Gold Phil Bullock Posted November 26, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 26, 2019 Six Bells Junction lists that tour on that date - but not the traction! Doh....
RMweb Gold stovepipe Posted November 26, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 26, 2019 (edited) There's also a colour picture of D7616 at Mallaig alongside the observation car, dated 13 July 1966. It's probably a different occasion as the loco is the other way around with no.1 end facing south. Edit: This photo https://flic.kr/p/qt9wTt and here's 25046 from the Blue period https://wobblewinterwanderings.smugmug.com/Trains/Class-27/i-ShbZDJQ Edited November 26, 2019 by stovepipe 2
RMweb Gold Sandpiper Posted December 30, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 30, 2019 (edited) A bit late to this party but here's a few more class 25 pics at Mallaig from the blue era. This first one is also from the Derby Sulzers site. Scroll down the page to 1973 for a pic of 25002. https://www.derbysulzers.com/25002.html These two are both of 25232 arriving with the 1003 from Glasgow. https://www.flickr.com/photos/149805346@N06/35255346313/in/photostream/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/149805346@N06/35224331344/in/photostream/ Edited December 30, 2019 by Sandpiper Tidying up links
Bill Jamieson
See also https://www.railscot.co.uk/img/35/679/ - the loco is unidentified but could well be D7616. Bill

Bill With the tablet-catcher recess under the nearest cabside window and the number at the far end only, it would be one from the Eastfield D7611-7623 batch, so D7616 is highly likely. RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted March 4, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 4, 2020 "Rats" were not that uncommon on the West Highland lines back in the day. They were used on passenger, mixed and freight workings. I can't help specifically with D7616 but given that they were regular visitors at Fort William there is every reason to suppose they reached Mallaig at times. Neither as common nor as powerful as the class 26 / 27 we more typically associate with the route but they were definitely frequent visitors. The occasional visits of a class 20 - which has also worked to Fort William - on the other hand was definitely one for the diary.

Bill Or possibly D7612. The first time I went to Fort William in the summer of 1966 D7612 hauled the train from Glasgow to Fort WIlliam, remember it vividly and being very surprised as I thought everything was BRCW or NBL hauled at that time
