Motts Lane - a foray into EM

A quick post to link a few clips from this evening's running session following the completion of the ground cover:

A few niggles to fettle but overall very pleased with the progress over the last few weeks. Next on the agenda is to sort the control panel to get the layout fully setup off the panel rather than dangling push buttons!

Hope everyone is safe and well.

Just wanted to post up a quick video of the freshly fitted Dingham auto uncouplers on my EFE CargoWagon and Hattons 66:

Following a great workbench article by @Kylestrome and following @Jack374 I’ve modified the Dinghams to a larger loop of .45 nickel silver wire. This has improved the couplings no end and I’m really pleased with the outcome. Just need to do everything else now!

Kind regards,

Will

Looking good and I'm pleased the double slip looks like its working well!

You need a class 40 for proper track testing ;) my falls off all over the place!

One thing I noticed with the hattons 66 is a bit of light flicker which seems odd. Does that one have all wheel pick up?

Your Vi 37 is still my favourite

Cheers

Will

Will,

I've been following somewhat in the shadows, but the scenery is coming along nicely for sure.

And that tractor with the Large Logo livery looks very delicious. A 37 in that scheme has always been my favourite.

Cheers,

Will(the other one)

Thanks very much “other” Will! It’s P4’ed currently most likely for a future project but it’s superb in LL. Hopefully should have some more progress on the scenery soon.

Thanks Will. It’s taken some fettling and I haven’t wired in the frogs yet but it works quite nicely so far! I think a class 40 may struggle over the double slip! It does indeed have all wheel pick up, but it needs the pick ups adjusting and a stay alive fitting. Could also do with having a mass wheel cleaning session...

Kind regards,

Will

I don’t think anyone does a specific 37/5 chip so I think that’s the closest possible.

My understanding of this is that internally a 37/5 and 37/7 are the same as a 37/4 so the sound file is acceptable for all subclasses.

Not sure if it's applicable to 37s, but I seem to recall that on some classes ETH fitted locos had a slightly faster tick over to provide sufficient power to the ETH.  If that does apply to 37s (further research required), then that would mean there should be a difference between a 37/4 and 37/5 or 37/7 sound file (although whether that difference is noticeable is a different matter!).

On the topic of 37s a few more clips of 37698 mixed in with a few of my shed:

Been working on a few wagons this weekend after a delivery from Phil at Stenson models, first up the S Kits KWA on sprung Y25s:

This is awaiting the final few white metal parts.

I’ve also converted the first VGA using the new W Irons and cast axle boxes from Stenson as well. This kit is superb and I can’t wait to do some more sprung air braked stock using them!

Just need to take some inspiration from @James Makin and get it weathered when the weather improves.

The final bit of work I’ve done this weekend is this eastern region hut from Intentio ( @BrushType4). A great little kit and fits in perfectly with the region. 37698 leaving Motts Lane sidings past the new hut:

Hope everyone is keeping well and managing to get some modelling done!

Kind regards,

Can’t believe I’ve only just found your thread will! glad I have though.

all looking very good and hope to have another visit once restrictions allow

Thanks Jack - nice to have you on board sir. Definitely; you’ll have to pop round for a play soon!

I haven’t done a whole lot on the layout of late primarily due to spending the majority of my available modelling time on 37516 (two pictures below) which has had a whole host of modifications including Penbits bogies:

Finally last night I got the layout out of the cupboard to test run this nice new little beast:

Thanks to @newbryford for the advice of running it the opposite side round to the side where the logo is one door out! I’ve temporarily converted this to EM so I can have a play with it before it goes to P4. This will be renumbered as 20310 and has already had the Shawplan roof fan grille added - thanks to @MRDBLUE17 for sending that to me!

Plan for the long weekend is to get on with the layout to a point where it just needs the scenery finishing off. The list of jobs are as follows:

- Add the check rails to the point traversing boards 2/3

- Wire up the frog on the above point

- Finish the control panel

- Spray the track and weather it (not sure if this is going to happen given the weather forecast!)

Hopefully some more progress to come.

Kind regards,

Will

Looking great Will.

I did not realise the error with the logo placement on the 20 but it is out of era for me. I am sure it can be fixed. There are plenty of options for doing so, Ben's resprays etc. or you could do it yourself.

A quick two shots of 37698 on the weathered track following a mammoth modelling session over the weekend to get the track finished, ballasted and weathered:

Very pleased with how this is now looking - albeit a bit weird without any scenery! more updates to come this week.

Kind regards,

Today’s trackwork image - concrete sleepers. These were individually laid using C&L plastic sleepers and Peco pandrol clips. The sleepers have been painted using Plastikote suede, and the rails have been painted using railmatch frame dirt. Ballasted using Woodland Scenics fine buff ballast and weathered using a mix of railmatch black, frame dirt and roof dirt. Quite pleased with the difference between the two lines - please excuse the unfinished platform in the background!

Evening all,

Just wanted to post a quick update on the layout. Recently on my Instagram page I posted that the layout would be up for sale soon as I look to get a P4 project underway. Not expecting to sell it immediately - I am glad to say @Chris56057 has purchased the layout from me, which was delivered to him this morning. I will leave Chris to update the thread going forward - pleased it’s gone to such a good home!

Over the past week I’ve finished the track, weathered it and sorted the control panel using the megapoints mimic panel and C&L servo mounts. This now works really nicely on push buttons. I’ve posted photos below of the overall state of play with the layout:

Control Panel:

Finally a few photos of 37698 being the last loco to run with the layout in my ownership:

Best of luck to Chris with the layout - I’ve been reliably informed he’ll be trying to keep the thread up to date with updates - so looking forward to Motts Lane getting finished!

Time to start planning the next one...

Kind regards,

Will

Thanks for the introduction Will, I'm very pleased to have been able to take on the layout at this stage and looking forward to making some more progress which I will document on this thread.

Will has done a fantastic job with the layout, it's going to be a tough order to keep the standards this high!

I hope to get the frogs from the points wired up this week.

Here's some photos of 517 on the layout..
