RMweb Gold Phatbob Posted September 15, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 15, 2020 Greetings all. A question for the hive mind. I’ve been looking for information on 4mm scale Ready To Plonk (RTP) buildings. Specifically, which prototype is each building based upon. A search on this forum has failed to answer this question and Mr Google has let me down too. Some, such as the Kernow specials, are clear about what they are based upon, but many of the Skaledale and Scenecraft buildings are extremely reticent about their origin. Descriptions like “stone booking office” and “suburban station” are unhelpful. As examples, are any based on North Cornwall Railway prototypes, Or Cambrian Railway prototypes? Thanks and over to you………………….
Steamport Southport
Which ones in particular? As often the clue is in the name as many are from heritage railways. For example Hampton was based on one on the SVR ISTR. Likewise they've done station buildings from the Great Central, K&WVR, NYMR, Also have done the Settle & Carlisle, March. "Granite" looks Midland. https://www.hattons.co.uk/164394/hornby_r9836_granite_station_buiding/stockdetail.aspx The Art Deco ones are SR or LT. I do know that the Suburban Station was Catford Bridge. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bachmann-Bachmann-44-0045-SUBURBAN-STATION/dp/B01CAI0FC2 Jason 1
Zomboid
I thought Hornby did a model of Mortimer station in 4mm, but I can't find much evidence of it now. Seems you can get it in 2mm though.
Steamport Southport
They've done loads. They've now got the Oxford Rail GWR ones as well. Moreton In Marsh I think it is. https://www.hattons.co.uk/513806/hornby_oxos76r001_gwr_station_building/stockdetail.aspx
Nearholmer
Somebody has done a full set for Sheffield Park, and somebody, possibly the same somebody, commissioned a very good, although actually not full-length, model of High Brooms near Tunbridge Wells.
Steamport Southport
Apparently it was Bachmann who did Sheffield Park. https://www.thelocoshedmcr.co.uk/product.php/7123124/
Ray Von
I've always liked this design: But the finished article looks "wonky": I believe it's based on a signal box in Wimbledon, the model is Farish. Looks like a good candidate for a conversion into a pub circa 1983.... Edited September 15, 2020 by Ray Von

Bachmann also did a Midland signal box- 44-172 "Tall signal box" https://www.hattons.co.uk/52764/bachmann_branchline_44_172_tall_signal_box_102_x_65_x_120mm_/stockdetail.aspx This is the box that originally stood on the level crossing at Coalville before it was moved to the former Snibston colliery/museum site: http://www.nigeltout.com/html/coalville-1970s.html Edited September 16, 2020 by Invicta spelling

Quite a lot of the Skaledale ordinary building are actually from Lincolnshire, although coming from the town in question I can confirm that business names have frequently been swapped round between buildings 1
RJS1977
Bachmann did the locomotive hoist from Aberystwyth at one time. 1

One that defiintely isn't is R8756, Jubilee Clock Tower, which is the one on Margate seafront https://www.hattons.co.uk/417004/hornby_r8756_po_clock_tower_skaledale_range_pre_owned_imperfect_box/stockdetail.aspx https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Margate_Clock_Tower_-_geograph.org.uk_-_1715234.jpg Another Kent building, from Bachmann (44-0020) The Jackdaw pub, is from Denton, between Canterbury and Dover- it was used as a location for the 1969 "Battle of Britain" film https://www.hattons.co.uk/301182/bachmann_branchline_44_0020_ln_the_jackdaw_pub_pre_owned_like_new/stockdetail.aspx http://www.dover-kent.com/Jackdaw-Denton.html The Jackdaw isn't the only film/TV star to appear in the Bachmann Scenecraft range- the "Corner Store" (44-0046) is from Lister Avenue in Doncaster- but is best known as Arkwright's shop in "Open All Hours" https://www.hattons.co.uk/107467/bachmann_branchline_44_0046_brick_built_corner_store_wright_s_groceries_/stockdetail.aspx https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_All_Hours There have been quite a few that I've looked at over the years and thought "That building looks familiar from somewhere"- Anyone able to offer some more definite IDs?

So what you're really looking for is a complete list of all 'OO' RTP buildings ever produced by any manufacturer and which railway company's architecture they're based on?? Good luck with that. Perhaps a better question might be "I'm modelling area X, in period Y and I'm looking for suitable RTP buildings. Can anyone make any suggestions?" 1

That narrows it down to about 300 buildings by my estimation... A complete list (say 'just' the post millennium Hornby and Bachmann ones) would be a useful resource but would take a huge amount of effort to create. Probably an impossible task for most of the non railway buildings with no defined 'house style'. Edited September 17, 2020 by spamcan61

Perhaps a better question might be "I'm modelling area X, in period Y and I'm looking for suitable RTP buildings. Can anyone make any suggestions?" I took it to mean just the recent ones from Bachmann/Hornby rather than anything obscure made in someone's shed or from the mists of time. Things you can walk in to your local model shop and buy. I read it as "What prototype is ref XYZ station building?". We've had previous threads on things like the Airfix and what is now the Gaugemaster/Fordhampton kits. The OP did say North Cornwall and Cambrian as a footnote. Jason
