Another preserved box: Romsey.  Open to the public on selected dates and well worth a visit if you are in the area https://romseysignalbox.org.uk/

Not in its original position but close by and still almost next to the railway.

West Kilbride: I hope it wasn't you who stole the steps. Description for the index: "Previous step end"!

Machynlleth: now of course the centre for control of the whole line by the dreaded ERTMS, and the reason we get no steam workings any more - and even engineering work requires a complete possession of either Shrewsbury to Mach or Mach to the end of the line either way if anything other than one of the three NR ERTMS fitted class 97s is used.

I can do Machynlleth on 9 April 1983. Just to confound Cornelius, there's steps at both ends. Have to go east end and west end

Meanwhile, back in G&SWR territory in March 1983

Well, I can do 1978- when the goods yard was in! Plus Dovey Junction BR(WR) in the rain in 1978.

A signalbox with a fire escape !

It's also a signal box with a brise soleil !

(It needs it because of it's ugly minimalist design.)

I have to admire that shot. Not a train in sight and it's raining. Such a lonely place, I think, still lacking effective road access today?

There is a footpath but no vehicle access.

I was on a visit to Wales to photograph the remaining signal boxes on the Cambrian. We had driven to Aberystwyth, my friend travelled on the VofR, while I caught the train the Dovey Junction. The VofR would always be there, but the boxes days were numbered. It wasn't raining at Aberystwyth, but tipping down at Dovey. I had run out of 35mm film, and only had the Rolleiflex with film. Having taken the photos (only 12 on 6x6 film!), I walked along the footpath to meet my mate in his car. I was soaked!

A bit of a seaside(ish) theme for today.

Seamer. Well it's not far from Scarborough is it? Showing the old box 0n 25 March 1983 with stairs and windows intact. According to the guff, it was built by the York and North Midland Railway, later part of the North Eastern Railway.

and Barmouth South a couple of weeks later on 9 April 1983 while still in its working days.

Back on Dovey Junction, alas no longer with a signal box, it really needs an access from the other end as there is a quite significant nature reserve there with a visitor centre (Cors Dyfi) with resident ospreys (there is a webcam), but one would have to leave the station in the direction away from the reserve, so quite a long walk (in the rain).
