RMweb Premium 45156 Posted October 29, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 29, 2010 Repainting that V2 into BR lined green would make a very interesting "might have been" model.
RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted October 29, 2010 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 29, 2010 Two Stunning locos there, and to think they are 35 years old!!!! Mons Meg has to be a favourite! I have her in A2/2 form. Did you build both kits? Keep the pics coming! Yes I built, painted and lined them within 6 months of purchasing them when they were released. the P2 is a Ks and the NB Atlantic is from Gem. The Ks kits could be a bit of a lottery and the P2 was one as the boiler castings were not the right shape, I never found out if it was in the production process for the first batch or if they were all like that. We stayed in a flat at the time and I recall sitting beside the lounge window for maximum daylight with a few photos adding filler to the boiler in an effort to get the right shape. A few months later we moved to a house with a small spare room which I used for building kits and also built a test track set-up. Once I had organised the room after all the other things to be done in the move I laid them aside and carried on building other more suitable kits which were being released on a regular basis in the 70s. I suppose I did not go back to them as they did not fit in to my time scale for a future model layout and I concentrated on for example the Cotswold C16, Nu-cast K2, Gem D30 and D34 etc. Time just flew in bearing in mind that free time was limited due to work commitments etc. - Perhaps a case of out of site out of mind. I have taken quite a lot of photos which I have transferred across to "My Pictures" which appears to be the easy bit as I have got into a bit of a muddle when trying to sub-divide them into different files. However kit building teaches you perseverance so I'll keep bashing on to sort them out!
RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted October 31, 2010 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 31, 2010 A seasonal photo. Unfortunately I don't have any witches on flying broomsticks to hand in 4mm scale!
RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted November 25, 2010 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 25, 2010 A new addition to Haymarkets' steeds courtesy of the latest Bachmann release. After receiving the requisite treatment it is now in service and so far has proved to be a good runner with plenty of power to spare.

RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted December 1, 2010 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 1, 2010 A few seasonal photos featuring a couple of birds in winter. With the snow belting down incessantly in Auld Reekie just now an opportunity was taken during a brief respite today for one quick photo in the garden a bit of which was used to double up for Cockburnspath on the ECML. Roll on summer!

RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted December 30, 2010 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 30, 2010 At long last I have completed the sorting out of the photos taken a few months ago and enclose a selection of some of them for anyone who is interested. They could be described as what would have been seen train spotting along the ECML in or outside Edinburgh on the ex- LNER lines during the late 50s in these times of great variety on the railway. As usual ex-NBR types are included along with ex-LNER machines plus the occasional visitor from other areas and of course the glorious 64B steeds are always there! Whilst transferring the photos across I seem to have got into a bit of a tangle and I apologise if some are duplicated! (some have definitely got lost in the transfer!) A Happy New Year.

millerhillboy
Really really nice stuff.... Some of those pictures have a real feel of an East Lothian village to them somewhere on the ECML. Also absolutely loving the Edinburgh based traction as well, something I'm trying to recreate myself in N gauge. Keep posting your pictures as they are truly great to see. Tim Lewis
Nice to see a model of Coldstreamer (60873 for those of you not aware). When I eventually get around to building a V2, I was wondering whether to build that one, though it might be a bit too 'obvious' (given the station I'm modelling)
7APT7
Hi ya Got to say, you have great photos of your layout, looks brill.... Do you have a Track Plan...? Keep the Photos updates, their excellent... Regards Jamie
RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted January 2, 2011 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 2, 2011 Glad that you liked the selection of photos. I have more in stock and will have to arrange them in some sort of order but am conscious of trying to offer a variety of shots rather than sticking to one area of the layout or only certain locos. In saying that however there is always the possibility of me going of on a tangent and featuring only Haymarket's steeds! although that could be too boring? The cottages are from the Harburn Hobbies Hamlets range most of which are based on the real thing in East lothian. Possibly in Fife as well, as these pantile roof buildings are to be seen there in certain areas. That is why I used them, as apart from not really being too interested in making buildings, they are suitable for the location of the layout. For running sessions I swap the stock about both in loco classes and passenger and freight rakes to suit either the Aberdeen line, Glasgow Queen Street line, the coast road to Newcastle and now and again a pure Waverley Route line up. Whilst it is of course the same layout the differing types of trains running does change the atmosphere. The Waverley Route sessions were particularly interesting as my friend Tommy Mann made up a timetable from his collection of working timetables involving a full days schedule. It required four operators, one at each control panel with 19 locos being used, all great fun and full concentration to the fore. The layout was in the BRM magazine in July and August 2009 with the track plan in the August issue. I don't have it on computer as I haven't the proverbial clue about that side of things. With regard to Coldstreamer go ahead and do it as it was a St. Maggies loco and worked all over the area.

RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted January 2, 2011 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 2, 2011 Some nice shots there, But the S&T are required at that signal .. Ah the the joys of layout photography! Signal arms already on the list of items ( Locos, rolling stock, signal posts, figures, hedges, fences, trees etc.) all caught by jumpers, cardigans, elbows, wrists, camera strap and so on which get caught in anything and everything.
Dad-1
A websearcher friend pointed me to this ..... Just fantastic, the whole layout with line-side rodding, everything looking right with suitable weathering. To me it's a shame that your passion is the 'posh' end because I Iove small work-a-day locos and truly appreciate the Pug and coal wagon tender. I tried doing that but mine looks like a poor Hong Kong toy (1950's speak) in comparison. Sir, you are both an engineer and 3D artist. Geoff T. RMweb Premium 60027Merlin Posted January 3, 2011 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 3, 2011 Many thanks for your comments. As Haymarket was a short distance from our home (at least it was for young lads at their fittest, not so for those of more mature years) there was only ever going to be one subject that I would concentrate on modelling as these days with "The Glamour Boys" with their pacifics were really special. However, I do model other Edinburgh loco classes from St. Margarets and Dalry Road sheds in an effort to capture the scene from these times as they all could be seen on the many lines throughout the city side by side on their daily work. The Caley 0-4-0 st being a case in point as it was shedded at St. Margarets for a few years in the fifties. Here is another shot of it for you just to restore some balance between that end of the scale and the "posh" end! Saying that, I now unbalance things yet again as I am now going to my work tables to take the new Bachmann Blue Peter apart for "the treatment" before it is included in the running rosters, yet another pacific - this time from Aberdeen but a frequent visitor to 64B.

Guest Max Stafford
Absolutely wonderful modelling, Merlin. It's all the wee touches like the fire irons, veggies in plots and dogs in gardens that elevate your layout to a work of art. Oh and the trains are marvellous too! Dave.
