Giles
People probably know this already, but for the few of us that didn't - Google Earth has a ruler on the top toolbar, which enables you to measure between any selected points - very useful for layout planning! You can measure exactly how long a station platform is, the length of that bridge, or whether such an such will fit on a baseboard......

Beacon
Great tip. I have used Google Earth a lot but never knew about this function. Do you know if Bing has a similar function as I often find that their images are clearer?

Do you know if Bing has a similar function as I often find that their images are clearer? I'm afraid I've never played with Bing - sorry - but if it does - let us know! BG John
I used it to get dimensions of an odd shaped 0.8 acre site, including working out the location and sizes of buildings. When I drew it up I came up with a lot of errors, so worked out a way of averaging the figures on a spreadsheet, that I can't describe! It was quite useful, but not railway related I'm afraid! I think you need to take a lot of measurements, average them, and compare with any known dimensions.
JZjr
Bing has no similar feature that I know of. Also clicking on the 'Path' tab in the measurement box you can measure lines that are not straight.
puffmeister_general
Thanks so much for that tip. It has saved me a trip to the station I intend modelling with a measuring tape!!!
