RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted January 9, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 9, 2013 Seems Latchford doesn't float boats - poor thing. Anyway, more along the same line Statham Barriers - old crossing keepers structure Lymm Station (sorry about the hair on the scan, I noticed it and rescanned the affected ones but missed this) Lymm Lane - I have other views which will eventually be scanned
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted January 14, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 14, 2013 In the mid 1980s Chester PSB came along and swept away all the remaining cabins, No.1 and No.3 had already closed, a friend of mine who was working on the railway at the time (not Flyingsignalman) arranged for me and him to walk around Chester No.2 area before the closure, such was the railway at the time. We we not allowed to cross to the down side due to the danger of entrapment so sadly I couldn't get a decent picture of the down home with theatre, but I got that from a train anyway. Down Helsby home 2 Down Crewe home 2 Down fast home 3, notice the second signal, under the bridge, also showing clear with a theatre, this was the signal I was not allowed to photograph Discs to the right of the above signal, with some nice point work, pity the shot is blurred. Goods departure signals and disc for the headshunt One of the many siding signals The cabin itself, an imposing structure A disc in the yard area Up fast home At the other end of the station was Chester No.3A and No.4 Banner repeater in use as a Chester No.3A BR One of the new signals, not yet in use Departing from Chester we pass the old GWR depot and No.4 box, everything in this view has now changed, the lines are electrified, the depot has been replaced by the hippo enclosure and box has been shut. The signals attached to the side of the box used to make one hell of a noise when pulled off. Looking back towards the station as we round the corner to No.5 A DMU from Rock Ferry approaches as we pass No.5 and take the Birkenhead line Upton IBS down distant, controlled from Chester No.5, motor worked Another one of the new Chester signals, not in use Hooton up Helsby home 2 reading, left to right, to the down main, the run round sidings and the bay The old Hooton South box is visible to the left with the station beyond
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted January 14, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 14, 2013 Back in 1979 Flyingsignalman and myself visited a friend in the University of East Anglia, down in that there Narwich Keith and I, as would be expected, visited several signal boxes on the way down and whilst we were in the area. RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted January 14, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 14, 2013 And just as I get to the LNWR!!! So here you are - with what must have been the easiest pulls on a signal that ever existed, 0 yards from the 'box. By this time Dolau was retained solely to work the level crossing while it was waiting to be automated and the 'box structure was distinctly tatty. Jon Fitness
Hi Beast! Thanks for all the Chester pics; very informative! They've filled a few knowledge gaps (and I've got plenty of those...) Here's a few taken inside Chester 2 in about May '83. Sorry about the dodgy quality, I was in a bit of a rush to catch my connection to Holyhead to catch a boat to Ireland for a railtour.. Cheers JF

RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted January 16, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 16, 2013 A brief diversion back to Mollington, for Debs (and her sister) - and anybody who likes LMS ARP boxes. The diagram is not as blurred on the print, it's the curve of the negative causing the issue, one day I might be able to afford a scanner which will hold the negatives flat Mollington Up Starter - the lampmans bracket shows where a distant arm was once fitted, this was removed in 1976, it was the Upton IBS up distant, motor worked Mollington Down Starter - a strange hybrid
RMweb Gold nexusdj Posted January 16, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 16, 2013 Many thanks for sharing these excellent photo's , I've really enjoyed looking through this thread time and time again . Regarding the paint schemes on the LM Region Signal boxes , I notice some are painted white with blue and others the blue sections are black . Was the blue and white scheme from the early 1970s with the black and white scheme replacing it and if so was there a date or year from when this changed ? Regional variations, and it's difficult to be precise as these things were often down to the local management. There were still cabins around with the red / cream in the late 1970s. Photos of your area of interest is the best bet.

RMweb Premium Grafarman Posted January 18, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 18, 2013 Great shots of Prestatyn Dave; they look about my time period too - late 70's ? Merfyn Jones
Some more for the North Wales contingent Apologies for the poor quality, I managed to set the scanner to darker by mistake - Doh ! Some great shots there Dave. About the time I joined the railway. Replacing the telegraph poles & wires one of my earliest jobs, in fact it had started when I arrived in 78. Most of those semaphores we replaced over the years. Merf. ps more please when you're ready.
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted January 18, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 18, 2013 Another North Wales interlude. This location was between Connahs Quay and Flint. Rockcliffe Hall - opened in 1953 in connection with Connahs Quay power station (visible in the background of some of the shots), and closed in 1995 when the new Dee crossing approach roads were constructed, the site of the cabin is directly under the road. The box was replaced by a portacabin structure.

RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted January 18, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 18, 2013 I think its Whittlesey Road, down by Three Horseshoes - looking at todays google view there is an (apparently) identical building in the background
