RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted December 23, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 23, 2012 Aintree Down Home.. definately the shortest LMS UQ arm I've ever seen. Bladeless! To all intents and purposes a mechanical colour light !
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted December 23, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 23, 2012 Chester No.3 This box had a new frame, installed at the same time as the old frame was still in use - that must have made for some interesting working conditions - and it had 45 levers too ! - it controlled the scissors crossovers in the middle of the main up and down platform lines, and the up and down through (the "fast" actually went around the back of the station, passing near to the goods shed) There is still a hole where it stood. RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted December 23, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 23, 2012 Picton Road Junction (Liverpool, Edge Hill) Gantry controlling the line to Edge Lane Junction (left doll as we are looking) and Exhibition Junction Olive Mount Junction is at the other end of the tunnel Edge Lane Distant. The bricks behind it are all that remained of Picton Road Junction box. This is the line that was reinstated a few years back as the "Olive Mount Chord" project, allowing trains to/from the dock to avoid running round at Edge Hill
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted December 23, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 23, 2012 Chinley North Junction - Midland cabin, replaced ca 1980 by a BR LMR standard box. This was built and commissioned during my time at Sheffield University, I have various photos of the box being built but, again, they need scanning - one day. Chinley North Up Fast (? - towards Sheffield) splitting distant, the right hand doll read around to Peak Forest, once the Midland main line, the left hand doll read, over a double junction, towards Sheffield. When the new box was comissioned this signal had a new head inserted on the existing post, between the new dolls. It looked like a disc cutter had been used to remove some materials and the head mounted on the remains of the post (I also have pictures of this, to be scanned) Notice the different position of the yellow aspect. At this time passenger trains were generally put onto/off the old slow lines at Chinley Station North, I only remember taking the fast lines once, so North Junction was really just a block post, this all changed when the new box was opened and the line became 2 tracks, the junction at Chinley North was then back into regular use again. RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted December 23, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 23, 2012 A few more of Ellesmere Port - some have been posted before Ellesmere Port No.2 down starter, Ellesmere Port No.4 down inner distant (just off the Helsby end of E.P platform) ex MSC line at Ellesmere Port No.2 - a pure LNWR signal Ellesmere Port No.2 cabin, an LMS (technically) box as it opened in 1924/1925 but was probably designed by the LNWR and therefore is to their standard "Type 5" design (of course to the LNWR it was just the most the current style). The signs of an "Ooops, Scotties!" moment at the other end of Ellesmere Port, No.5, East end

RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted December 23, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 23, 2012 Wrexham area - I know I've posted these before too but I might as well repost in this thread Croesnewydd East Croesnewydd South Croewsnewydd North up home Off And giving a demonstration of a motor worked distant signal with a mechanical stop arm, the slotting being done through switches on the arm, hence the distant stays off until the stop arm returns to danger. A backing signal - one of the last on the network.
micknich2003
An intersting signalling arangment of two boxes close together, H&B Rly of 1885. The LNER obviously considered the arangment an expensive luxury and replaced the East box c1928 with three ground frames. To save confusion with the nearby ex NERly box of the same name the LNER added "North". Mick.

Merfyn Jones
Well here we are. Before Chester was altered out of all recognition. An up London passing No.2 box. A DMU special passing the gantry by No.4 box During the changeover to the new power box, 2 May 1984. S&T from all over assisting Chester's own teams. I was in a team of 4 changing track circuits to new locations and testing. No.3 box No.3A box with our team. No.4 box No.5 box Towards no.5 from the CLC bridge, looking towards the station. Looking left towards goods shed, and all the yellow S&T vans. No.6 box on an earlier stage, mainly removing redundant rodding. No.6 during stagework. By No.5 box during scrappig up, 4 May 1984. micknich2003
Something a little unusual, a North Eastern Rly UQ signal, as can be seen, it is no more then a std signal mounted upside down. The North Eastern had more than one such signal, and no doubt other company's too. Mick.

flyingsignalman
Some more while Merf scans his .. At one time there were plans for a service to Heswall only, so the original revolving disc was replaced by this pair, top arm reading over the crossover and bottom to a limit of shunt that was also provided. When the Loop and Link lines were opened in May 1977, an ambitious train service was attempted (15 minute off peak, 10 minute peak service on the Rock Ferry, New Brighton and West Kirby lines, also run was a Birkenhead Park, round the Loop and back to Birkenhead Park which ran every 10 minutes too). On the Wrexham line, extra trains were run from Birkenhead North to Heswall giving, I think, a 30 minute service to there. Unfortunately, the services was to ambitious with all the extras and the Birkenhead Park and the Heswall services were withdrawn at the end of the Summer timetable in 1977.
