RMweb Gold CovDriver Posted February 19, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 19, 2016 I'm really looking forward to seeing this fine layout on Sunday its the first time I'll have seen it in the flesh so to speak my camera will be clicking away (no flash to annoy the operators)
RMweb Gold Revolution Mike B Posted February 19, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 19, 2016 James, I look at stuff everyday on this website and I never cease to be amazed at peoples modelling skills. Whether it's the O Gauge boys and their life like locos, the N Gauge Micro Midgets like myself, or the OO Gauge nutters like you lot.... ...I struggle to get my head around the amount of detail that serious modellers (and I think I'm pretty serious) manage to add. Where you find the time to do things is beyond me! I can't wait until you bring the layout to Pompey so I can actually see it for real

Sandwich&AshfordMR
To all at Loftus Road, Thanks again for the opportunity to run my Electrostar alongside your Electrostar and wide of variety of rolling stock at the Diesel and Electric Show at Telford last weekend. It was a pleasure to meet and spend time with you all and see Loftus Road from a different perspective. Hope to see you all again soon in the future and enjoy these pictures from the day. Regards, Matt.
RMweb Premium James Makin Posted February 28, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 28, 2016 (edited) Thanks Matt!Good to see you and thanks for lending a helping hand last week! Really good to see your Electrostar, looking nice in the clean SouthEastern colours, and three Electrostars on one layout must be a record now!It was a great weekend overall - it was so busy I barely got a chance to take any pics, just a couple here -There's a long way to go on the houses but they looked a little more 'settled in' with the addition of some Chelsea tractors! There was a good selection of traders and I managed to come away with some bargain Dapol '73's for future rebuilding, adding to the London theme! Finally, it was a novel (and heart-stopping) experience being able to pack the entire layout and stock onto pallets to be taken back downstairs to the van outside, different!Overall, a top weekend, a great first show at Telford for Rail Express, and fingers crossed there will be a repeat next year!Cheers,James Edited February 28, 2016 by James Makin
G-DIMB
It does look very nice. Shame i wasnt able to get to Telford to see it. One question i do have is about the really useful boxes. What size do you have there as im looking for some to use as stock boxes but i cant decide on the size i need. Thanks Paul

Moggs Eye
I didn't get much chance to look at the layouts over the weekend at Telford, but I did enjoy having a few moments watching this one. Lots of comments have been made about the detail and street scenes, but my favourite bit was how the disused platform had been depicted and then the modern replacement built over the loop's formation; something unusual really well modelled. Harry Lime
It does look very nice. Shame i wasnt able to get to Telford to see it. One question i do have is about the really useful boxes. What size do you have there as im looking for some to use as stock boxes but i cant decide on the size i need. Thanks Paul Hi Paul, Some of us use the 7 litre sized boxes for locomotives, with 22 litre (Wrapping paper) ones for pairs of megafrets and other container traffic. You can usually fit eight locos into a 7L box, with up to eight pairs of container wagons as well as a variety of extra containers in a 22L box. I am also experimenting with one of the 22L boxes to see if my rakes of Dapol MRA wagons can be made to fit completely rather than having to assemble each rake by hand at an exhibition. We usually line the boxes with foamboard (other sources are available) attached with Bostick. I think I am right in saying that James might use other makes of box as well. If he reads this at some time, I am sure he will provide some more information for you.

RMweb Premium James Makin Posted March 24, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted March 24, 2016 Hi there, Is there any more news on the Eurostar project Regards Ben Hi Ben, Gangmember Chris is working on the lights currently! In the long term, it'd be great to accurately model the various prototype carriages with all the different window arrangements etc at some point. But it's not really 'my bag' so not sure if I've got the stamina to chop up dozens of carriages when I could be tackling wagons and dirty diesels haha! pitbull1845
Well I managed to get to the show, nice to see the layout again. Had a quick chat with James and discussed his long list of future projects! One of the good thing about Loftus Road is seeing the lengthy trains, a lot of which had received the Makin magic. The show in general was quite quiet, I was tempted to buy a loco but the stall didn't take cards so that saved me..
RMweb Gold Revolution Mike B Posted May 14, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 14, 2016 (edited) Great to meet the Loftus Road Crew today, and cheers James, Chris and Pete for sharing your modelling skills with me. I know you guys had a few problems with running issues but it didnt bother me because I was more interested in the scenery. Laugh of the day was the bloke that said Chris had wound the HST up too much and it was way too fast.........I've got a video that proves otherwise :-) Edited May 14, 2016 by scoobyra
RMweb Premium James Makin Posted May 15, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted May 15, 2016 Really good to meet you guys yesterday, it was a good day out! Everything went well save for a minor challenge with a board misalignment early in the morning, and nice to get some decent long trains running! I've got some pics to share, probably put them up this week. Now with Portsmouth down, a busy Summer awaits developing the buildings and scenery ready for our next outing at Warley in November. Cheers James

Cheers, James Taking a look at the row of your 'Chelsea Tractors' one cannot help wondering how the 'owners' would get some out of their parking spots, until it occurred to me that parking is pretty much a universal experience; over here in NY we park 'by ear'. You hear a crash/crunch/shattering of glass and you are almost there. One more try...
RMweb Premium Popular Post James Makin Posted May 22, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted May 22, 2016 Hi guys, As promised, here's a few snaps of our recent show at the Victory MRC exhibition in Portsmouth last week - not the greatest pics as they're only on an iPhone but better than nothing! Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr It was an interesting day out for the gang, and my turn to get behind the wheel of the rental van! Picking up a 2010-plate LWB, high top 'Sprinter', a mere 135k miles young, it felt fairly empowering, if a little slower than my normal transport! Running out of time to get a rolled-up copy of The Sun for the dashboard, we zoomed up to the Club house and got Loftus Road loaded on Friday afternoon, and beat the rush hour traffic over to the venue in Portsmouth for a cheeky Strawberry Cheesecake McFlurry before setup (but not as good as the Creme Egg one). Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr The layout was set up in a reasonable time, and not too bad considering all of the extra boards in our new large format! As you can see, the layout's in a transition stage regarding the presentation, we need to get our new scale-length curtain sorted! Club-member Chris has given the front boards a new lick of purple since our last show at Telford, so that's some progress! Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Come Saturday, we soon had things moving nicely, and a few issues around a board join were resolved, giving pretty smooth running for the rest of the day - after all the setup, it's a shame it was only a 1-day show! Here we can see 47785 Fiona Castle taking on the mail service - a reprieve for the vulnerable '47' - ironically because the 'booked' traction - my EWS Class 67, has the same DCC identity as Chris's spangly Freightliner Class 70! Below can be seen the new van hire depot taking shape...shamelessly inspired by all of our trips to these places as part of Loftus Road exhibitions! This is only the starting point, and yet to be completely 'blitzed' before it'll look halfway decent. Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr 66010 took charge of the ever-increasing ballast train, now running at approx 25 re-worked MHAs, plus assorted MTAs, and soon to be joined by an MFA build! I've sorted out the running order now, the lightweight Bachmann MTAs have been moved to the back following an incident at Telford when the weight of the train on a corner turned over a single MTA, and the entire train of wagons following it onto their sides!! Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr It's nice for the wagons to stretch their legs, here we can see OBA 110180 taking a trundle round! Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Mike's superb scratchbuilt station building, I've added a few London details of late, including the Metro newspaper boxes, roadsigns and brick textures for the crossing and road markings. Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr The residents of Loftus Road won't go hungry now! Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr We've recently been working on the Earls Court end of the layout - with the structures superbly built by Pete Hollman, I've been tinkering with a few pavements and road surfaces, with plenty more planned before our next show outing. Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr The front terraced houses have received a little extra detailing since Telford, and next to come is more roof detail and some excitement on the rooftop balconies, watch this space! Cars will soon be detailed, weathered, matt varnished and secured before Warley. Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Petrol station is still going strong, about 18 months old now! Recently the roof came off during transportation!! My next projects are the foreground before the tracks, and also the big white void over the road from the petrol station, the fun begins! Loftus Road by Worthing MRC by jamesmakin2002, on Flickr Tatty 47467 debuted at the show and I think I'd like to fit a sound decoder to this one! Maybe one with a poorly-sounding engine, to match it's looks! Overall - a great day out and thanks to the Victory MRC gang for making us feel welcome, and good to catch up with a few RMWeb mates, you know who you are! We had a decent breakdown and managed to get back to the Club to unload the van before it had to be returned, then panic set in as I got lost while trying to find the van hire depot again, and only just made it by 10mins haha! Our next show is Warley in November, and as you can see, there's lots of exciting plans and projects in the pipeline, some of which are above, and a few cool surprises for you over the Summer! Cheers, James

RMweb Gold Revolution Mike B Posted May 23, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 23, 2016 It's funny how I'd been waiting to see this layout for ages and then when it was on my doorstep, I missed half of the flippin' stuff on it because I was too busy talking to you, Chris and Pete!
