Support Coaches

I know there have been similar posts in the past, but I was thinking it might be a good idea to form a 'pool' of information about the various support coaches seen accompanying various locos when they are away from their home bases.  I also think that models which would be suitable for conversion (or direct purchase) would be a handy resource for those of us who wish to model such vehicles.  Even a steam movement on the main line 'light-engine' is usually accompanied by a support coach, a lone loco on the main is a rare sight indeed!

The following are the start of the list, please feel free to provide any amendments or improvements where necessary

  • The A1 Trust's Bachmann commission for their new support coach, which should be easy enough to represent with a suitably numbered (E21249) Mk1 BSK in Crimson/Cream  (although the bogies may need changing - not sure what pattern they should be)

  • The NRM has a Mk1 BSK, Numbered 99953 which has also been produced by Bachmann as a limited edition.  It may be possible to pick one up second hand (I managed, at a lower price than they were originally sold for!)  but failing that, a standard re-number/letting job it is.

  • The A4 Locomotive Society, who own 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley have a Mk1 BCK (I think) E21096, again a Bachmann job with lettering and numbering and possibly bogies.

  • 71000 Duke of Gloucester has a Mk2 BFK numbered W17041, but as I'm not very sure about the various types of Mk2s, I don't know if a Bachmann, Lima, or ex Airfix/Dapol model would be best to start the conversion from!

Over to the rest of the forum, if you can add any information to the few starters I've thrown out there please do!  I've been searching my photos for decent ones of support coaches, and despite being sure that I've taken some in the past, I'm yet to find them but when I do, I’ll start adding some on here too.  Obviously, if anyone else has any, they are more than welcome to post them in this thread.

Lastly, if this has been posted in the wrong place, please don't hesitate to move it or contact me regarding whatever needs to be done in order to put it in the right place!

I'm looking forward to compiling a decent list of stock/donor vehicles for all those wishing to model a touch of preservation on their layouts!

Cheers

J

I have already covered off the Mk2s in the Farish Mk2a thread. The Mk2a BFK shares a body (but not roof vent positions!) with the BSO. I have been considering the idea that 5305LA, of which I am a member, might commission a model of one of our three, but less excited by the prospect if the NRM, after all those special edition locos, can't shift theirs!

Thanks for all your replies, and images, they are most helpful and interesting!  A friend of mine who is the editor of the free online magazine 'UK Heritage Hub' has emailed me a fairly comprehensive list of coach details including basic livery details of some of them, and that list is included below (most of the coaches already mentioned are repeated within it, but in some cases with a little more detail)

  • Ian Riley/ELR; 2 MK2 BSKs numbers; 35517 & 35508 both in faded maroon
  • 45212 will appear with a MK1 when its ready...
  • 60009/61994; MK1 BSK; 35486, Maroon
  • NELPG; MK1 BSK Converted with roller doors; 80220, Maroon
  • 61264; MK1 BCK; 14007, Maroon
  • 6201; MK1 BSK; 99040, Maroon
  • 34067; MK2 BSK; 35518, Southern Green
  • Various WCRC; MK1 BSK; 99312, Maroon
                              MK1 BSK; 99035, Maroon
MK1 BSK Converted with roller doors; 80223, Maroon
                              (To Be Completed)
  • 70000; MK1 BCK; M35465, Crimson & Cream
  • 71000; MK2a BFK; W17041, Maroon
  • 70013; Mk2A BFK; 14099, Maroon
  • 45305 (previous one prior to current MK2, believe now with 777) MK1 BFK; M17019,  Maroon
  • 5690; MK1 BFK; M17025, Maroon

I've also had a scan through my photo archives and managed to find some photos which feature support coaches and these are shown below...

Now we're getting a comprehensive list together, lets start looking at how to model them.  Mostly it's going to be a re-number job on an RTR Mk1 or Mk2, which are available in both N and OO.  Some will involve a bit of painting too as some coaches have their body colours extending around the ends and have other detail changes such as stem removal or interior alterations (kitchens etc which will also alter the roof vents)  So to get it right, it'll be a case of finding some decent photos of your chosen subject, which this thread is starting to produce.  More photos and updates are welcome, and I know that whenever I got out and about with my camera now for charters, I'll try to get a couple of shots of the support vehicle too!

In the early days of main line steam there were often different coaches used to the now common Mk1s and 2s, IIRC the NRM would use one of their own collection when one of their fleet was out.

That reminds me, TomJ said the NRM couldn't shift their support coach models.  I believe they sold out pretty quickly as I enquired about them when I ordered my DP1 a few years ago.  I picked my support coach up from ebay and I imagine they still show up from time to time (I've not looked for obvious reasons!)  If you can persuade the 5305LA to have one commissioned, it may well raise a bit of cash as it's (they are) a unique vehicle(s) to that loco and any trip behind it.

Looking forward to more discussion/information!

Cheers

J

Bachmann have already produced models of the support coaches used by Tornado and Sir Nigel.

They were available from the A1 steam Loco Trust and Sir Nigel's, from available from The Model Centre.

However they both appear to have gone from their websites.

Just found this thread whilst searching some details for Mk2a BFK/BSK 35517 (ex-14099/17088). It has West Coast branding, but appears to be an Ian Riley/East Lancs Railway support vehicle.

I have a 2010 pic of my own of it at York, but was wondering if it has seen much use lately on the mainline? The most recent pic I can find is dated 2013.

If anyone has recent info on it's use, particularly on mainline duty, I'd be most grateful.

Cheers,

Mick

Ta to Dan on wnxxforum.

Looks like it's now in full BR style maroon BFK livery without WCRC logos.

And it's likely to be in Scotland as it last accompanied 45407/44871 northwards to operate The Jacobite.

Hi All

Just come across this thread as I am also interested in getting a support coach for my Hornby Sir Nigel Gresley.

I found this pic on the interweb of Bachmann's version of the coach but cannot find a part number for it, any ideas?

I'd love to get hold of one of these.

Cheers, Dave.
