RMweb Gold 4630 Posted September 9, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 9, 2021 (edited) On a misty 9th September morning West Coast Railway Company's 47270, wearing a replica of the British Rail corporate blue livery and displaying the correct reporting code, leads sister 47848 approaching Heaton Lodge East Junction with the diesel portion of 1Z24, 06.00 Carnforth to Scarborough. This is the final outward Scarborough Spa Express to use the Calder Valley route this year. ...apologies for the rogue stinging nettle in these two. It was just too far into railway property for me to bend it out of shot. Edited April 7, 2022 by 4630 re-upload photos
montyburns56
Not a great quality picture, but it's interesting for a number of reasons. 47829 Norton 2004 by Dave Gomersall

Vanfit
Been scanning my sides, quality of this one not great but its a Namer with an interesting CCT, maybe in Engineers use? May 1983 but I cannot remember where it is, but sure someone on here will know.

Not trespassing i was working. If it’s May 1983, I suspect it’s 47085 MAMMOTH again. Wasn’t it the only Stratford silver roof namer at that date? Since it’s the same month, might that help place the location of your previous photo? Edited October 9, 2021 by brushman47544

It's fitted with a headlight which it received sometime between Jan and April 1984 if you look for contemporary photos. I think the MK1 CCT may be an internal user looking at the faded paint and position and size of the number. I stand to be corrected! Vanfit
Hi Guy Now that makes sense, I reckon I was a year out! 47085 MAMMOTH with the CCT may have been taken at Westbury during the resignalling/remodelling in about April/May 84. I wish I had kept notes when I took the pics, I have to rely on very faded dates on the slides, just month and year, misread that one. Mike

Mike Yes that's westbury (north) and I also think you're correct in saying 1984 for when the remodelling took place- I think I may still have a copy of the signalling notice somewhere. Vanfit
Yes i was there. I was on Westbury PSB operating floor when the signalman (sorry old terminology!) gave 5-5-5 Opening SB to the fringe SBs. Would it be possible to see the Yellow Peril (Notice) - would bring back many happy memories.

hexagon789
Found this while looking for something else. In the early years when the /7s tended to wander a bit more off the push-pull diagrams, 47703 approaches Arbroath with the 1440 Aberdeen-Edinburgh on 14/09/1981. A really smart looking set of Mk1/Mk2Z stock as well. Photo credit to the excellent KDH Archive.

And really annoying it was too. Having got the 47/7s for haulage using fill-in moves on the E&G, instead of something interesting appearing elsewhere such as a 26 or 37 when the normal 47 was unavailable, the 47/7s started to be kicked out instead. I wouldn't have minded, still have a soft spot for the 'Shoves. But then I have always had a soft spot for Brush Type 4s full stop, so what can I say?! They had a period immediately after conversion but before the push-pull services commenced in the latter half of '79 where no fewer than 3 of the subclass were diagrammed to the Highland Main Line, one on the Motorail (which from Stirling was part of the morning Glasgow-Inverness), and one each on the north and south Clansman and relevant return workings. They certainly got about in those early years. Mind you, speaking of 26s - I'm sure I've seen a photo of a 26 piloting a 47/7 on the southbound Clansman one day in '79. Perhaps that arrangement would more please the 26 fans and Brush fans jointly?
