georgeT
Well here we go again, decided due to the serious lack of space and expense to drop the idea of a layout in O gauge, just couldn't get a layout to look right in such a small space, so everything is packed away for another day, thats when 'Ashcombe' was born, but this time rather than spending lots of money on baseboards just yet, l have decided to do the buildings first and then build a layout around them. l have also gone back to using Slaters / South Eastern Finecast plasticard, so the first build will be the station here are a few pictures of the start... georgeT
Added the chimney and stone base to the station..
Andrew P
Morning George, I know we talked about it but I didn't think you would start so soon. The building looks good, Obviously Southern/ Western Region by the Stonework on the Building so where are we, North Cornwall on the Withered Arm, or North Devon maybe, although I think most Devon Stations were Red Brick but I will have to have a look in my books. Certainly Wadebridge had that sort of Stone and I think Bude did as well but not certain, It will be fun doing the research and finding Building pics from the areas. Are you thinking of a Branch Terminus as per Trebudoc? Looking forward to the Track planning meeting soon. Bodgit
georgeT
Hello Bodgit, Well its somewhere off the withered arm l guess, 'Ashmere' will be a thru station fiddle to fiddle, with a goods depot, engine shed etc etc, no track plan as yet, what l have decided to do is build all the building first and build a track plan around them.. George..
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted December 11, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 11, 2013 Hi George, Sorry to hear that Ashchurch is on hold, but intrigued by the idea of building a layout to match the buildings... Nice work on the station, very neat. Al.
georgeT
Morning Al, 'Ashchurch' was a great idea, but it was doomed from the start, as me and Bodgit live too far apart to make it practical really plus the layout would have been far too big to set up in the room without upsetting SWMBO, so l will sell of the bits (again) to help fund the new project, The new 'Ashmere' will be 'OO' and ex-Southern and GWR stock, in a small branch line terminus, as the quality of 'OO' ready to run is far better these days and getting better, so on with the building, l don't think l will add as much interior as you have with 'Bakewell'. l have added more detail to the station.. georgeT
Made a start on the centre building of the station, l cut the embossed plasticard to shape with the windows and doors, then using double-sided tape l fix them together, then using capillary action with MEK l glue the walls together on the edges, then cut out the window frames... Andrew P
Afer nooooon mate, I do like that, the building will be really interesting and will a good track plan to justify it so here's some inspiration, its Potterbourne that you and I took pics of at the 2012 Nottingham show. Its either 8 or 9 ft x 18 inches if I remember rightly. Turn it around, Make it BR/ WR It has the Engine Shed, Goods Shed, Dairy in front of the Fiddle Yard. Andrew P
And take this end out through the trees to the other FY. Boded it again
Andrew P
In the pics above I would have put a couple of trees behind the Engine Shed leaning over the track and the same with the trees at the back of the hole to hide the hole better. Having said that, I cant model to the standard of the rest of the layout so what do I know. Bodgit
RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted December 12, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 12, 2013 Having said that, I cant model to the standard of the rest of the layout so what do I know. Having vision is something some very competent modellers might envy. No good making brill models if you can't then use them to best advantage. Perhaps that's why club layouts can succeed - lots of guys each with different skills.
RMweb Gold Alister_G Posted December 12, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 12, 2013 Having said that, I cant model to the standard of the rest of the layout so what do I know. Bodgit Sorry, Andy, but I disagree with that, totally. Your layouts are superb, and not only that, but you consistently produce layouts of the same standard, not just once, but many times. Al. Andrew P
Thanks Al, I wondered why you gave me a DISAGREE, hahah, I guess I just enjoys creating new scenes and trying new challenges but only on the scenics. Bodgit of Swad
georgeT
Hello lan, You say about vision, well l have had that all my life, keen to get on with the building of a new venture but when the projects are finished the interest goes and l end up selling or scrapping hours of work, l really admire the chap who goes to say Warley just to buy some GWR water buckets that he needs, and wont get drawn into something that would throw him off track.. georgeT
Morning Bodgit of Swad, Thanks for the pictures, l do remember that layout, spend quite a bit of time looking at it, god knows where my pictures are ? l will have to spend a day looking at my hard drive, as l have thousands of pictures all over the place... George
georgeT
Andy, Just take a moment to look back at all the great layouts you have built over the years............have a real good look......then tell me that they are not up to standard and l will eat my hat, if l had one (hahaha), you have given me and a whole lot of others the encouragement and drive to build something.. George.
Andrew P
Cheers George, its when you look at details like the inside of Buildings that I never do and also things like Fire Buckets, Road Signs, and the tiny details that make all the difference. Re Potterbourne, I think that the reason it looks so good is the fact that its NOT OVER CROWDED, and therefore works well to produce a very realistic looking layout. emt_911
George Spending the rest of the evening trying to catch up with the weeks changes on the forum. Looks like you'll be busy just with the buildings. Especially maintaining the high standards you constantly achieve. Andy, I also agree with everyone about the standard of your layouts. Fast builds, highly detailed and loads of character. Duncan
georgeT
Hello Duncan, Nice to hear from you again, yes l will be pretty busy with the buildings on 'Ashmere' but there is no rush, l'm starting to enjoy my modelling again after a bit of a droop in enthusiasm, but l am getting really excited with this new project, also its a bit of a crusade as well, as l have loads of off-cuts in plasticard to use up which l have had for years. l am trying to create a nice little but busy terminus in the late 50s, based on the southern somewhere in the south-west of england, so l can mix ex-SR and GWR stock, also l need a goods shed, engine shed etc and plenty of sidings for shunting, as believe it or not l have never had a proper layout of my own, so it will be a first for me. George..
georgeT
As you will only see the front of the station, l see no reason to model the rear, saves a lot of time and effort, getting on with the main building....
Andrew P
Hi mate, will you do the interior and light it? Bodge
georgeT
Hello Bodgit, Simple answer is no, theres too much work to do, without lights so l will keep it simple, also added the third building to the station today, also bought a nice Bachmann N class in Southern green.. George
Tomsontour
George you can already tell this is going to be a belter mate, the building already has a lot of charachter to it, look forward to seeing it painted All the best Matt
Andrew P
SOUTHERN? Green, thought this was BR.SR/WR? so what happened, was it to pretty to refuse, now you will need the Southern T9 and M7, hahaaa. Andy
georgeT
Hello Matt, Thank you, l have really started to get excited with 'Ashmere' and have decided to make it two fold, in one l will have everything in Southern green around the late 30s when everything was nice and clean, and then have a collection of Ex-Southern and GWR stock all nicely weathered and grubby, George..
