andy stroud
Hi Andy, . I presume it will be a roundy-roundy... What sort of era are you contemplating? Yes it will be roundy roundy. The storage sidings/fiddle yard will be behind the scenic section, with 4ft diameter connecting lines in a kind of covered trough. The intention here is that the tunnel will be completely black when looked into. Era 1970's/early 80s
Popular Post andy stroud
Time for an update... The layout has now had some basic ground cover as well as having some lighting installed. The lighting is daylight aquarium striplights. I have had a go at doing a couple of rock faces in order to break up the ground cover a little. I used one of the casting kits from Woodlands Scenics. One of the next tasks is to start making some trees. There will be lots of them above the tunnel mouth. Edited July 1, 2014 by andy stroud
Popular Post andy stroud
I am planning a castle/folly type building up on the hill side where the tin can is. Also I have installed platforms so the layout now has a station.

Alex DCC layouts
Your layout is coming to life after you have added that ground cover. Which static grass have you used as it looks great.

andy stroud
I have used a Greenscene products blend of 'lush green' (about a third) and 'straw'(about 2 thirds). I was originally going to go for the carpet underlay method but was really impressed with the demonstation and advice from Maggie Gravett at the recent Railex show and then decided to go for the static grass method. andy stroud
Lovely stuff Andy That takes me right back to happy memories of Cornish holidays... Yes. It's a clayhood thing. For me anyway, no other railway vehicle sums up 'West Country' or even 'holiday' quite so so much.

Popular Post andy stroud
The layout has been packed away for a few weeks, so meanwhile I've been working on a few things that will be added when I set it all back up again. Here is a signal box which I have just completed. It is not based on any particular box. It has vertical wooden planking which was far less common than the horizontal planking that most similar boxes had. It has been constructed mainly from plasticard and microstrip. The shell for the upper level was clear plastic with etched brass windows from Churchward Models. The roof slates are strips of paper. I'm not sure what to do about a name board as the letters will be so small. The steps are based on Plastruct N gauge steps. I have also been weathering a few locos. Here is a recently 'outshopped' Hymek. Edited October 3, 2014 by andy stroud
fender
terrific layout and your stock is excellent too. could we have some more pics of that please?
andy stroud
Over the last few days I made this platelayers hut. I have only fairly recently moved to N gauge from 4mm scale and must admit that when I drew up the plan for this hut and the signalbox, I was a bit shocked at just how small they were! Still great fun to make though, and not difficult given all the different sizes of microstrip available. It's based on ones that are seen in books such as John Vaughans' 'Diesels in the Dutchy'
HealeyMills
Hi Andy, Your work here is absolutely fantastic. Not sure how I've missed this thread before now but loving every bit of it. The layout has real atmosphere about it and love the weathered tractor Thanks for sharing and look forward to seeing more progress. andy stroud
I have made a castle to go up on the hill near the tunnel mouth, to replace the tin can which featured in earlier pictures. It is based upon Blaise Castle at Bristol. It is built as usual from plasticard and microstrip. This is the shameful state of the side which will not be seen from the front of the layout! Most of my structures are like this. The viaduct is still plain white plasticard on the other side. Construction underway
leftwinguk
Hi Andy, You have a fantastic looking layout there, the architectural modelling is first class. It really shows the merits of N gauge well, with the railway set in the landscape not the other way round. The sight of a full train of clay hoods emerging from your blacked out tunnel and onto the viaduct will be worth seeing. Will be following with interest. All the best, Andrew

andy stroud
Thankyou for the kind comments. I do enjoy making buildings and for me, one of the nice things about 'moving down' to N gauge, as well as the 'trains in the landscape' thing, is that you can fairly easily accomodate whole, complete buildings where as so often in 4mm scale, there is no choice but to rely on low relief for the larger structures. Killybegs
Only just found this thread. Absolutely fantastic work. Especially like Blaise Castle as that was my old stamping ground having grown up in Westbury on Trym!
Popular Post andy stroud
Have been 'planting' a few new buildings on the layout. The signal box is located near the station, with the main running lines in the foreground and the goods loop running behind. The lamp hut was built from plasticard and 0.3 square microstrip. The 'squareness' of the microstrip dosent seem to show up luckily. I am not aware of any suitable N gauge corrigations that I could have used. The lonely platelayers hut now sits by the entrance to Blue Ball Tunnel. ...and then out pops a Hymek on a coal train.
