Spitfire2865
Well Ive been in a bit of an LNW mood. As the wagons book doesnt have much livery detail as I had hoped it would, Im limited to the few numbers of each type they have recorded in here. Diagram 9 in late livery. And I like the wood so much I took another photo. Diagram 13 in early livery. Going to make this extremely dirty. And diagrams 3 and 54. I still have another D3 and D54 to build, and I need to decide if I want to build another D9 or a D4. And as it is now past halloween, I feel like I should show what I was "commissioned" to make. My girlfriend wanted the helmet, so I made one. Edited November 2, 2015 by Spitfire2865
Twright
Those wagons are excellent, you've really mastered wood effect.
garethashenden
I had a look back but you didn't really go into detail. How do you paint the wood?
RMweb Gold 57xx Posted November 2, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 2, 2015 Those wagons are excellent, you've really mastered wood effect. This ^^^ I had a look back but you didn't really go into detail. How do you paint the wood? And this ^^^ You really have cracked that wood effect. Looks like you've even included knots on the Diag 9. Spitfire2865
I had a look back but you didn't really go into detail. How do you paint the wood? Post 244, page 10. Though Ive amended it to two washes both with the planks. And I dont bother with the silver as it doesnt seem to do much unless the wash is extremely light. You really have cracked that wood effect. Looks like you've even included knots on the Diag 9.Those "knots" are just bubbles I forgot to pop when applying the wash! Testors washes really froth up when shaken. Spitfire2865
Well I made the twin bolster filthy. Would have made it worse but i couldnt get any more "dirt" to stick. Might try more now that the wash is dry. Powders should stick well.

Spitfire2865
Weathering and lettering. Dirt and more dirt. Maybe a bit too much, but hey. If it wasnt repainted by the 30's, it would be filthy anyway. Diagram 54 lettered and ready for dirtying up. Might make a false load for this one.
LNWR lives on
They are looking superb Are you still wanting to produce some vans? I have LNWR Wagons 2 which has several van diagrams in it and also an LMS publication which has some van diagrams, so can scan the relevant and send to you if you wish Dave
Nelson Jackson
lovely wagons! I reckon you need a layout soon perhaps to hold all the rolling stock you have haha, looking forward to the next updates.
Spitfire2865
They are looking superb Are you still wanting to produce some vans? I have LNWR Wagons 2 which has several van diagrams in it and also an LMS publication which has some van diagrams, so can scan the relevant and send to you if you wish Dave Thanks. I have LMS Vol 1, so Im good on LMS vans, but LNW vans would be most useful. Any of the later van diagrams from the LNW would be nice. D88 or the like. And any livery details would be helpful. I know the LNW books arent too focused on their LMS life. lovely wagons! I reckon you need a layout soon perhaps to hold all the rolling stock you have haha, looking forward to the next updates.Haha, I wish I could build a layout. I wouldnt know what to build, I have no space, time, or money to do it!Maybe once Im out of Uni. Ill have a permanent residence and I can do something. Though Id probably build a large goods yard. And reach over a 3' baseboard to use 3 links!
Spitfire2865
Well. Its been a while. And probably will be a while still till the next update. To start, a weathering of the D54. Then, a D3. Followed by a partially lettered D9. And finally for dessert, a rake of everything LNW Ive built. We hope youve enjoyed your evening at Café Spitfire. All joking aside, I havent been doing much of anything recently. It seems I either dont have time, energy, or will to do any work on anything. Now with thanksgiving break, Ill be away for a week, then once Im back, I have to start thinking about packing for winter break. How do I pack a months worth of everything I need into a single duffle bag? And even then, I dont have much modeling to do. Nor do I know what I even want. For a while, Ive had my eye on the steeple cab from Roxey Mouldings, but Im not sure what use Id get out of it. And scratchbuilding tons of wagons without being able to bring most of my equipment home with me will be hard. Oh well. I have 3 weeks to figure it all out.
Spitfire2865
Well not much has been done. I just dont feel like doing all too much lately. But I do like tying down loads. And I made a coal load for the D54.
Spitfire2865
Well Im trying. I have less than 2 weeks before the month long winter break, so perfect time to start scratchbuilding! This may end up giving me something to work on over the break if I dont get too much done now. But first. More wagon loads. A D9 with tarpaulin properly tied down....well...by properly I mean I pulled the buffers out a bit and wound the thread around them. Its easier than tying them off with actual knots. I really like the buffers from Ratio. Proper metal, push fit. Pre blackened. The load, after much head scratching, was made from cardboard packaging, plasticard off cuts, and scrap balsa. No real waste of materials aside from the thread. The tarp is again a WagonSheets product. A little fussy to use if like me, you actually tie down the sheets. I always put bits of cello tape on the underside where the string goes through. Have to figure out a better way eventually. And scratchbuilding. After much head...'scratching' I decided I wanted a new van. After searching through my drawings and photos, I decided Id give myself a challenge and go for an LNWR diagram 88 van. Over the break, Ill have to stop by a model shop and pick up a properly sized plastic strip. Maybe even some archers rivets. Maybe Ill treat myself.
hayfield
Trevor May I say your painting and weathering of these wagons are suburb and that is before you study the modelling craft of the actual builds, the way the loads have been secured is very realistic. I enjoy your posts like others very much Thank you
Spitfire2865
Wow. I actually got a bunch done. Ive assembled the body, put it on the chassis, started adding the strapping and bolt-work, and even made a roof. Strapping is paper, bolts, Im not sure just yet if I want to order some archers, or if I want to try normal bits of plastic. Archers would be easier as its all in lines. Its really becoming a means to clear out a bunch of bits from the spares box. Ive managed to have everything I needed as spares lying around. Spitfire2865
Quick update. The strapping on the sides is finished. All it needs is bolt work. Aside from that. All thats left is the end strapping and bracing, solebar details, brake gear, running gear, and roof. Card is a terrible medium when you have only dull blades.

Spitfire2865
Wow, has it really been over a month. The Christmas season saw a lot of working, and building a balsa plane, but little railway modeling. Plenty of planning though. First, the LNWR D88 van, now with boltwork from glue, primer and paint. I need to get my front lit photo set up going again. Next the roof and then underframe. And a new addition, a bit of an impulse buy as I wont have anything to run it on for a long while at least, a Roxey Mouldings Minnie. Im building it as an electric and plan on one day having a micro seaside or rural freelance tramway layout to run it on. But until then, it is the test loco for my layout. The motor bogie should find any dead spot easily. Edited January 24, 2016 by Spitfire2865
RMweb Premium Mark Forrest Posted January 24, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 24, 2016 Just catching up as I seem to have missed this thread until now. As others have said before, the wood effect you are achieving on you wagon interiors really is exceptionally good.
Spitfire2865
Fast work when I have nothing else to do. The loco has been painted and awaiting roof fixing. And I found a use for the basic Hornby driver figure.

Spitfire2865
Between (procrastinating) building a layout, waiting for ordered things to arrive, and completely neglecting anything I intended to do, Ive completely forgotten to update what is going on at Spitfire HQ. Absolutely nothing. Well..nothing railway related. Instead, Ive been messing about with a project I started months ago. Before Christmas, and I think even before Thanksgiving, I started a scratchbuilt fantasy airship thing spurred on by my love of flight, and steampunk-ish fantasy machinery. Im rather proud of my 1/72nd bathroom furnishings. And a little Bob Ross inspired painting. And in the end, with a lighted interior from some small lights I will still have to source, the entire thing will only be viewable through the windows. A nice little shot of a chair and rug. Well, although it isnt anything to do with trains, it is keeping me busy and focused. Hopefully I can get some mojo back to get cracking on trains once again.
Spitfire2865
Wow. Been a while since Ive had train related things here. Ive decided to reopen my workbench, and get started on finishing the few wagons I have sitting around half built. To start, Ive put wheels on the D88 van. All it needs now is to add brake gear, make appropriate brake levers, and attach the roof. Then hopefully livery will be a simple task. And restarting the Ratio D3. This was put on hold due to the floor being warped, but I figure I can throw some rocking axles on it and it should be fine.
Spitfire2865
The roof has now been added. Along with brakes somewhere in the darkness underneath. I had to rebuild the roof ribs as I tried to redo my favourite wagon roof technique, but failed miserably. Just didnt have the plastic stock to do it correctly, also it didnt lend itself well to a metal roof. And Ive fallen in love with Plasticweld. Now that Ive had some practice with it, and understood the working times it allows, Ive gotten some pretty good results. Brake levers and guards made from plastic strip. The lever is doubled .5mm plasticcard with a third layer for the axlebox and handle bends. The guard is styrene strip formed into a box around the lever and poked with a hot needle to get just the tiniest surface detail. And some v hangers to add. Still needs bolts but Im not done yet. Im now waiting for some paints to come in, one of which will help with painting all of these new bits. Then lettering, though I think Ill wait till the other two wagons I have on my bench are ready as well.
