Popular Post jonny777
Under an increasing threatening sky, 50003 passes Clapham Junction with an Exeter to Waterloo service. In the distance 33016 and 33019 are creeping up on the Ascot lines with a cement train. 4th July 1988.

jonny777
This is 50037 'under the wires' on April 1st 1988. I am not sure precisely where this is, but given the large motor factory in the background I'm assuming it is in the Longbridge area?
RMweb Gold The Pilotman Posted October 18, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 18, 2020 (edited) It’s not Longbridge @jonny777 but you’re not too far off; it’s just west of Canley (the station is visible beyond the red signal) with Coventry in the background. I’d put money on it being 1M01 the 0718 Paddington to Wolverhampton “InterCity” service. Edited October 19, 2020 by Western Aviator 1 1 1

Taken from the footpath of the A45 opposite Sir Henry Parkes school field walking towards the bridge over the line. The Rover plant where my dad worked is the industrial backdrop. All changed now! jonny777
Thanks everyone for the Coventry info. If I had thought a little more, I could have ruled out Longbridge because it wouldn't have been electrified in that area in those days. 1

RMweb Premium Claude_Dreyfus Posted November 15, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 15, 2020 (edited) You can rule out that loco being 19 as it was released from refurbishment at that time (handed back to the WR 03/04/80), so would have sported a headlight when you saw it (and would have been pretty clean, but still in BR blue). Edit: It is 'Monarch'. Note the marks on the cab front match. Popular Post Halvarras
Let's kick this thread off for 2021 with some early Western Region photos of low-numbered examples! Sorry about the variable quality, mix of Instamatic and next-to-useless Halina......my initial ascent to 35mm was a backward step! I assume even fuzzy period pieces have some value 46 years on! Hope you like...... 400 at Bristol Bath Road on 2/6/73.... 401 in almost exactly the same spot on 28/7/73.... 401 again, getting assistance from 1673 Cyclops at Bristol TM on 11/8/73.... (image needs some work I think....) 50002 this time getting a drag through Reading by 7018 on 29/6/74, with 47185 in the background (h/c 1013) - wish this one was sharper, and I had a sound recording.....well, you can imagine! It wasn't only the local Class 117s which were capable of burying Reading in a blue haze!!........ And finally 50004 at Old Oak Common on 6/4/74. Interesting one as photos of this one and 50050 with cabside BR logos, both renumbered that February, are uncommon - both were noted at Reading on 8/6/74 with all logos painted out for some reason. I had photographed this one as D404 without MU fitting at Crewe on 3/11/69, and 5 days after I took this photo it was my first Class 50 for haulage on 1B86, Swindon to Bristol. It's therefore a bit special to me and my Hornby D421 will shortly be renumbered 50004 (with cabside logos) in its honour! 24

Popular Post Rivercider
I did not get to know the class 50s until they came to the WR. Although I was never properly into haulage I would make a note of the loco on my train, so did get hauled by all 50 as they often worked services from Weston. Here are photos of some of the early ones, I have not found a picture of 50005 yet. 50001 Dreadnought stands in platform 3 at Bristol Temple Meads with a Plymouth to Glasgow and Edinburgh service. 9/6/83 50002 Superb runs on to Bath Road shed 1/12/81 50003 Temeraire arrives at Exeter Central with the first down train of the day the 06.32 Salisbury to Exeter St Davids. 11/3/83, 50004 St Vincent accelerates past Reading West Junction with a service for the West Country, 28/11/78. 50006 Neptune is seen at Exeter Central with the 12.25 Exeter St Davids to Waterloo service, 28/7/80. cheers Edited January 8, 2021 by Rivercider spelling
Rivercider
Here are 50007 50009 and 50010 - I cant find one of 50008 yet. Hercules heads for Paddington. 50007 passes Acton Main Line. 11/4/83 50009 Conqueror stands at Plymouth at the head of the 10.00 service to Penzance. This train was formed by the 06.35 Bristol Temple Meads to Plymouth service which was also booked to convey a number of vans. 16/7/80. 50010 Monarch at Exeter St Davids with the 16.20 departure for Waterloo. As a bonus 46020 is on the Down Main with 6V53 Stoke-on-Trent to St Blazey Clayliner, while 50014 Warspite in platform 1 is on the 12.25 Paddington to Plymouth. Nice - I sometimes forget that 50001/6/13/17/19/47 were refurbished before Large Logo livery arrived. 50005 seemed to be camera-shy - from memory, which I long thought may be faulty, 405 spent some time on crew-training duties based on Newton Abbot in 1974 and was there long enough to become the last 50 to get its TOPS number. So I wasn't surprised when MLI 193 on the Class 50s confirmed it wasn't renumbered until August 1974, months after the rest.
