Forty years ago today - I took just the one photo of 50041 'Bulwark' myself, coming off Bristol Bath Road, but no idea where it is right now so I hope a Flickr pic is acceptable to mark the occasion......

image.png.d4ce7e2791d949c500c556832b966916.png

Doncaster did well to repair '041 within 12 months, considering the damage.

This event also had an impact on me, indirectly. I'd travelled around on trains a lot in the 1970s, but got married in late 1979 and by the time of this incident we were a family of four so, as is often the case under such circumstances, my rail roving had become somewhat curtailed! However on 23rd November 1983 I had to get from Swindon to Bristol to attend an interview with the intention of getting myself onto a training course - I'd reached a point in life where a career change had become necessary so this was an important day and, despite having a car, not being familiar with the inner workings of Bristol I'd decided the train would be more reliable.........

So I arrived at Swindon station in plenty of time, to find everything in total chaos due to Bulwark's ill-advised high-speed arrival at Paddington. Trains were running but it was a case of getting on if one turned up (taking care not to end up in South Wales in the panic of course!) By the time this happened I was too flustered to remember what got me to Bristol, but I do remember reaching the interview by the skin of my teeth and in a bit of  a sweaty mess!

It was well worth it as I was accepted onto the course (it had an upper age limit which I met at the time of the interview but had just exceeded by the time the course commenced) and it eventually led to me working for a company for 34 years. Since I was able to get a grant towards travel I commuted by train between Swindon and Bristol from July to November 1984 and took lots of photos (which I must get around to scanning one day) but during those months there was of course one particular Class 50 which never appeared........

I was at Padd that day, just minutes after '41 came to a halt on its side, I was on the way in to Old Oak for the 06.00 shed turn on the tube from Hammersmith and saw the coaches skewed with some on their side as we pulled into Padd. When I got off you could hear a pin drop and there was still a fair bit of dust in the air. I made my way past the lawn to board the workabus where I found six other Old Oak lads waiting, there was much confusion on the way down to Old Oak and when we arrived the lobby was full of train crew booking on with nowhere to go. I can remember it as though it were only yesterday.

This is how it was reported in that evenings Evening Standard. I was working at Padd ODM at the time, and most were late that morning. I was with Paul Koch and it might have been one of the following days that after checking the battery room at the telephone exchange, we went up onto the roof and watched some of the re-railing proceedings. A class 47 was being attached to the drag-gear to pull the loco on greased up rails out from under the bridge, while the coaches were being re-railed. I remember one sleeper starting to roll towards Westbourne Park, spitting out scotches placed on the rails in an attempt to stop it. It did stop eventually, having gone through one crossover....

Interesting to read the "How to get home tonight" part of the article as 40 years later and Paddington is once again closed with long distance services terminating at Reading with a limited service running between Reading & Ealing Broadway.

Thankfully though, this isn't as a result of an accident but planned engineering work in preparation for the construction of the HS2 station at Old Oak.

One out on the ID Nidge! Never mind, the number's legible. IIRC there was a pause in their inter-regional reallocation when 35 locos had moved to the WR, leaving 15 on the LMR including this one which became my last required 50, copped while standing atop Langstone Rock near Dawlish Warren on 22/5/76.

I've posed this question before but just in case the right person is reading this - did 50034 acquire nameplates in this original livery, as 50017 did? The 50s had a habit of doing such things in pairs (and I don't mean double-heading!) so I'm hoping it's true, to maintain this tradition!

Fat finger syndrome strikes again, I'm sure I typed 34 not 35!
