Hugh Flynn
Lets be honest the railways don't really want freight on them unless its bulk transfer that makes money. Look at all the stations that had small yards connected to them, just look in old books then do google earth today. Same goes to a lot of works that had railway connections, lines gone and now just memories. There must have been many happy scrap men in 80,s/90,s???? Mike Storey
I was on trainee secondment at Healey Mills in 1980 with the Area Freight Manager (Lawrie Hall - a legend in his own lunchtime). The words that stayed with me were - "if the wagons are stuck in here, they're not earning money". That was just before the control tower scared me to death with a blast from one of the wagon retarders just as I walked past it. eastwestdivide
Saw on another forum the suggestion that Healey Mills would become a base for trans-Pennine electrification work, but I haven't been able to find any online or print sources for this. Any ideas anyone?
