BR Cargo mid-weight with long body and crane

RTI Cargo Cab, Herpa Hiab crane, Modified RTI dropside body, old Herpa wheels, Cararama lights and scratch built chassis all from Everything But Trains

After comparing to pictures it looks like the black below the screen needs to go further down as well as bit of tidying up. Also need to lower the cab slightly - it's only held on with double sided tape at the moment

Perhaps this will help with the detailing.

The old saying about buses has certainly come true. Well railway crew buses in this case. We wait years for one and the two come along together.

My parcel from Everything but trains arrived on Friday and was opened with interest. First glimpse of the crew bus from 'everything' was of a neat set of parts for the body shell. Not a crew bus kit but what is now known as a scratch-aid, as you do not get a cab, chassis, wheels, roof ventilators and the tool lockers. Ten minutes or so saw the body shell assembled and rested on a donor chassos from B-T. Then I thought somthing wrong, so out came the drawing I had made years ago and lo and behold it is too small in length, width and height. Adding the cab (Roadrunner) made it look worse , as the body should stand higher and wider than the cab.

Closer looks put me off originaly, but having slept on it, I have compared it to my existing models and am determined to put it right. More of this to follow. Very nice first attempt Steve, but I have the feeling your drawing may have let you down.

On to the RTI crew bus body. Described on the package as "representative of the various bodies built" It actually looks a good liking for one of the rerailing buses, being longer than the standard 14 seater, but not long enough. Andy tells me the body on his is 5.65m long and the model works out as 5.25m so some lengthening is needed. Width and height look OK. Windows are odd though, seem too deep and there are two on the off side instesd of one. So again, somthing to work with.

I look forward to doing both of these, as having lived with them years ago, I have that soft spot for this type of crew bus.

A couple of shots for those building both types may be of help.

Please could you send a 'correct' drawing as when I added the cab to mine it appeared correct. How much are we taking about here? I would have also preferred a bit of 'off line discussion' first.

I presume that you fitted the front and rear panels inside the sides?

BTW has your BT chassis got the correct sized wheels?

Also as the body is designed to fit on a selection of cabs, it certainly appears the same width of the cab here

Steve, no criticism meant of your effort, but I want to show people on here that a decent model can be made from your parts. A little work has to be done but that is what is meant with this type of kit.

My effort so far has been to add 4mm to the length to bring some more bulk behind the rear axle. I have added the distinctive roof style that was on many of the later ones, 30 thou plastic with a 10 thou overlap above. This has added to the height but I want to add some to the bottom of the body to raise it up. Also the aluminium rubbing strip needs adding along the bottom of the bodywork, which will give a little more width.

You will notice that from the front windows of the body you can see over the cab roof and also along the side of the cab. The bodies were 7'6" wide which was the same as the cab over the wheelarches. Most cabs being about a foot narrower.

My drawing was made about 30 years ago from the real thing. The dimensions were all the same on the various bodybuilders.

Cab height needs adjusting and rear lights need leveling. The white box behind the front arches is meant to be the battery, that need squaring off too.

With a Cargo cab. Really the cab's arches need trimming down and the steps removing.

Alongside 2 Dodges made earlier. Left the T reg with scratchbuilt body from 1978. centre the D reg. model with a modified Jon Hall body of 1986, and the H reg. Roadrunner one of the last style from 1990.

The yellow fleet looks great Merf, particularly the new addition. I'd forgotten how odd the front window made the Roadrunner look!

I managed a couple of photos of the N scale Network Rail MAN I mentioned previously - thanks for posting your photos on my thread, they were a godsend!

The Japanese cab is just a gap filler to get it out for last weekend's exhibition until I get the MAN cab finished

A couple of yet to be announced railway road vehicle releases from Oxford Diecast.

Hi kevb,

Thanks for the preview of some future Oxford products,

Can you tell us more? Forecast production dates have been notoriously unreliable, but presumably there are further releases planned and it would be nice to see what else in this vein may be in the pipeline.

Sorry, I can't give you any dates for future releases however if you go to http://www.oxforddiecast.co.uk/navigationOX/76/76IndexALL.html and click on each of the decades shown, you will see the, otherwise, unannounced releases.

If I hear any dates, I will let the forum know.

Many thanks Kevin; useful information. It is a site I surf at odd times, but these new ones had slipped in under the radar. The 3 ton Bedford GS is perhaps the most obvious choice, and no doubt it will get into one of the Oxford threads.

I borrowed one of those Balfour Beaty Land rovers in 2001, as we were looking for something that we could use round central London, instead of the huge SRS Road Rail recovery equipment Volvo we kept at Old Oak.

Alas it lacked a engine driven MFD pump, but other than that was a great bit of kit, EWS wouldnt buy it though, shame as it had few miles on it and was perfect for what we wanted, Eastleigh borrowed it after me, and said the same.

The only problem was at 70mph on motorways it was a bit lively on the suspension!

I bet the cornering was "interesting too" I have often thought it would be fun to take one of these down something like the bletchley oxford line, currently disused and not connected with bits of rail missing, would be fun!

Funny-looking beasts, weren't they? I presume the cab nearer the mast was for use when lifting/lowering containers, whilst the other was for longer journeys.

One of these was used at Bristol Temple Meads goods yard in the early 60s to load and unload containers when the overhead gantry was out of use for any reason.

Keith.
