RMweb Gold simonmcp Posted June 29, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 29, 2015 Hi Guys, Got this offer from Screwfix for laminate flooring underlay but think it would be good as track underlay.http://www.screwfix.com/p/vitrex-premier-wood-laminate-underlay-boards-5mm-9-76m-green/68038?mi_u=194056821&cm_mmc=Email-_-E15W22A-_-DOTD-_-VitrexPremiumUnderlayBoards Simon
ohanlonmartin
Simon, I have used that underlay as an alternative to cork and am happy with it so far, not sure if the ballast will be secure if the diluted PVA method is used on top of the foam when (if) I ever get to that stage. RMweb Premium ColinK Posted June 30, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 30, 2015 I wonder if it would work when I build my indoor LGB layout?
BG John
Is it the same as this from B&Q? If so, it's a type of cardboard, and not waterproof. It crossed my mind to try it, as I just happen to have some, but wondered if it would disintegrate. It's pretty tough though, as I have some exposed on the edge of an unfinished laminate floor, that gets walked on regularly by wet and muddy human and dog feet! So it may well survive PVA based track laying and ballasting long enough to dry out unharmed.
ohanlonmartin
BG John, The stuff I used is an actual foam, albeit probably of very limited quality, it is used as an underlay for "floating" laminate flooring. Ballasting on top of it will I think result in forming a hard crust sitting on an impermeable surface and the diluted PVA won't filter down to the actual timber of the baseboard, hence my concerns on that front.
