Today's yesterday's big update has screwed all my file associations up, why can't they leave things alone?

Grrrrrr

No problem with my Corei7 desktop PC or SWMBOs Celeron laptop. all the normal associations work as before.

The only time I had a problem was with the original 1511 update when it changed pdf to Edge.

However the AMD 64 is another matter!

I have not had the 1511 update and any attempt to find it claims there is an error downloading updates.

I have just tried to load it from an ISO image and I get the same problem. Can't download updates!!!

Oh Dear!

AMD64 ISO install (second attempt without updates) went fine until the second re-start (approx 20% installed) drive error: "SMART enabled but command failed".

Now totally screwed up with no working operating system.

Hi Keith,

I have an AMD64 system and that sounds like the exact thing that happened to me.

I had to make the spare drive the master and install Win 8.1 onto it first.

Then download and install the latest full Win 10 package.

You have to have the drive which has the first Win 10 installation connected or the install takes you back to Microsoft to BUY a new Win 10 download!

Thanks

Actually it turned out not to be a total disaster after all as the faulty drive wasn't the Win10  C: drive, although for some reason the computer thought it was the first drive (how did it get swapped?) and that's why it stopped and wouldn't boot up.

I unplugged it (SATA) during a stalled boot up and the boot resumed and Win10 continued it's update.

It's now completely installed although I have lost all my apps! (Should have checked the version!)

Now got to re-install everything - PITA

What's this "Beats" software? I haven't seen it.

Firefox has changed from Google Search to Yahoo on one PC, but I don't think that was to do with MS!

The things I would like to permanently get rid of are "Groove" and "One Drive" I keep uninstalling or disabling them and they re-appear.

It's just turned my virus checker off and turned on windows defender.....    Won't let me turn mine back on.....  what the f**ks going on.  Microsoft are losing points here...

Probably because the version of your virus checker is either too down-level, or the version is not supported on Windows 10.  Try going to your virus checker's website and download/install the latest version.

For PDF go to settings, type "default" in the search box and select "choose a default app for each type of file".  Scroll down to PDF, left-click the entry and change to Adobe.

Your printer might also need updated drivers, assuming it's still supported on W10.

It's the worst piece of audio crap ever inflicted on the ears of humanity. Designed for modern computer generated music played by people who wouldn't know a tune if it hit them around the head with a drum riser. It puts an unlistenable EQ onto the output of the sound card and also an automatic volume control *feature* that cannot be disabled.

It's enough to make sure that I will NEVER buy another piece of HP crap ever again.

Anybody else still not had the 1511 update?

My Core i7 laptop is still on the original version that was loaded ages ago!

It checks regularly for updates and has never found it.

Keith

Since you've already said you've downloaded the 1511 ISO, why don't you just update from that at a time of your choosing and save yourself worrying about it?

My ancient HP Deskjet dating back to Windows 98 days works just fine with my (relatively) new laptop with the downloaded W10 drivers.

HP scanners are another matter, nothing that pre-dates Vista seems to be W10 compatible, though this may not apply to other brands.

My Epson scanner was first released in 2004 (3 years before Vista) and has W10 drivers.

wrt Epson scanners, I've had three over the years, because drivers were not updated. My latest, when I went from 32bit to 64bit win10 has no 64 bit drivers. However, VueScan http://www.hamrick.com/  will drive most, but my son has given me his old canon scanner which works fine in win10 64bit.

My Epson scanner definitely has suitable Win 10 drivers

Epson driver: 12181.exe which was released in 2007 covers all Windows from Win 98 to Win 10 both 32 and 64 bit versions!

Keith

EDIT Even ABBYY FineReader Sprint 5.0 (OCR), which came with the scanner and claims it does not work on 64 systems, does!

For my Epson scanner, they have no 64 bit drivers, as I said (and the helpful web blogs, etc., suggest installing another Epson driver, and selecting that - and that doesn't work either, for this scanner.) The Epson site actually suggests VueScan. However the cheap, lightweight Canon scanner I'm now using is much quicker (but does not allow film scanning), and is powered from USB. It uses an LED light-bar, instead of a fluorescent tube, and I think that will give better long term colour consistency, as well as virtually no warm-up time.

That's unfortunate.

I wonder why Epson choose to support some scanners (mine) and not others (yours)?

Not very consistent IMHO.

It's not the first time for me. I bought this inexpensive Epson scanner, iirc, back when i upgraded to win7. I had bought a more 'pro' scanner about a year before that, and Epson did not provide the drivers for W7 for that scanner, either. I think they want us to buy new scanners. Anyway, none of the Epson scanners I have had are as fast as this Canon one (Lide 210) less than £50 from Amazon, I think, but free to me. Vuescan would have cost more, but could have had some benefits, but none that I am now interested in.

Hi all,

My problem and BSOD now appears to be linked to a hard drive failure.

The drive was a Seagate ST1500DM003 Barracuda 1500 GB Internal Drive.

It appears that there was a problem in the past with this variety of drive and they gave the 'Clicks of Death, prior to total failure.

As Win 10 was then unable to discover the drive it then goes to the next available drive and makes that the boot device.

Due to this - no matter what the drive description was - Win 10 then names it as the C Drive.

This is how the drive change that Keith describes occurs.

Now - I just need to find a way to recover the data off the failed drive.

I was installing Win 10 from the fresh and as a result, I had managed to get to the point where Win 10 would let me back it up.

Now - how do you recover data from a drive when the heads have crashed!

Thanks

If the data  is not 'that' important, shove it in the freezer. http://www.thetechmentor.com/posts/put-your-hard-drive-in-the-freezer-to-recover-data/ but follow the links to possibly better methods, depending on the mode of failure.
If the data is important then send it to a specialist as described in this link  http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/saving-your-data-after-a-head-crash,review-1315.html

Hi all,

This is how the drive change that Keith describes occurs.

Thanks

Not quite sure that it is the same. It wasn't Win 10 that stopped but the PC itself during a re-boot

The problem was in the BIOS boot up settings where the order of drive booting is set.

The C: drive with Win 10 on should have been 1st boot another drive with Win XP and Linux on (two more partitions) should have been next.

Where it boots up and tests the drives the second drive was showing a SMART error and causing a hang. When I went to the boot order options screen it showed as being 1st in the options.

Unplugging it during a boot up allowed Windows to continue and finish installing.

Cheers

Keith
