A family holiday to Germany in 2014 gave me the opportunity for some photography in a foreign place !

I'm afraid I know nothing about the trains but here we go (only 14 months later)

Nievenheim - 31 July 2014 - very lucky to catch the local freight heading out onto the main line.

The Ruhr area certainly is a worthwhile place for trainspotting, Dave! I can see you also caught a bit of the extensive suburban traffic there, in this case worked by Class 423 units. The loco behind the fence was 185 697, owned by stock lessor Railpool.

The BR112 are running in borrowed time, the BR110 they derived from have already been retired.

That was a different Class 112. The one from Dave's photo is related to the Class 143, formerly of GDR origin and known there as Class 243. The 112 is geared for 160 kph rather than 120 and in fact, Deutsche Reichsbahn of the GDR had already made preparations for obtaining a batch of such locomotives - designated Class 212 at the time - but for mainly political reasons and the lack of suitable routes for such speeds, no 212s/112s were obtained till after the demise of the GDR.

Great photos Dave.

Thanks for posting them and be good to see some more if you have them?

Only a few hundred ...  :mosking:

I'll post them all, we had a (planned) power cut all day today so everyone is catching up on Internet stuff, and our connection is very slow so I'm not uploading many tonight. I've got a lot of passenger stuff at Koln and some of one of the electric coal railways - I'll need to dig out my notes, or ask our German relative where those were taken, but I'll get through them slowly but surely.

Nice to see your pics Beast66606. Looking forward to the pics of the coal railway, its somewhere I've wanted to go for a long time.

There is so much to see railway wise in Germany, but catch it now while you can. The 218 and 232 diesels are vanishing as are some of the older electric locos. Plus the stock on the Wuppertal Schwebbahn is due to be replaced next year.

I usually have a week in Germany most years. The 2015 trip was to the German/Danish border to photograph diverted diesel hauled freights, the Sylt car shuttles while still hauled by 218's and the NOB services with their DE2700 diesels. I've not finished editing the video yet.

Skipping a few days as I haven't got time to upload the Koln hundred.

Whilst out walking in Sturzelberg I managed to catch the local trip working (or whatever it's called in Germany)

7th August - on the way to the electric coal railways but I'm putting this in here as I want to keep that to it's own post.

Nieveneheim - a closed off crossing, replaced by the bridge in the background of some of the shots.

Off to Dormagen - my guide used to work at Bayer and was keen to show me some of the sidings were the frequent trains were handled - sadly none arrived whilst we were there but we were making flying visit to these places.
