It's been a difficult couple of weeks with layouts being withdrawn due to family bereavement and illness of operators but I think we have now reached the final line up. I'll post the full show guide in a couple of days once I have descriptions of everything.

As mentioned previously, the Clubrooms will be open with Duffield OO, Hillandale OO and Warner St O on display

In the Community Centre will be the following

Derwent Valley Club N (as seen at TINGS a few weeks ago)

Bindon Halt N (first time at this show)

Lauries Lair N (first time at this show)

Friarsgate OO

Ringburn OO

Thomas OO

Kids Pay Layout OO

TownEnd 7mm NG

Battenburg G

Scenic Demonstration

Static Display Military models including rail mounted guns

Static Display Figure Painting

Trade support

Malcs Models (Ilkeston)

Railway Bookshop

John Kelsey Good as New and Second Hand

Ecclesbourne Valley (Fund raising for the Wirksworth Line)

Club Second Hand

Community Centre Tea Rooms open both days for light refreshments.

As mentioned in the first posting, this is a proper club show with all the layouts belonging to the club or it's members without the expense of any visiting layouts and it's a testament to the strength of the club that we have been able to successfully carry on in this way for 50 years !! Of course we also organise the big show at the Roundhouse (previously Moorways and Assembly Rooms) which is very different to the small family friendly show at Mickleover. Two different shows aimed at different audiences.

This show was the very first model railway exhibition I ever visited, waaay back in (I think!) 1980 - only 35 years ago! I really was a 'snot nosed kid, being full of a cold and approximately 15 years old.

I liked it so much, I joined the club some three years later when I lived permanently in the UK.

I'm unable to make it down this year but I wish you all very well indeed.

All the best,

John E.

No mention of the best part of the exhibition?

What's that then Mike? Have I missed something - I've listed all the layouts, traders, demonstrations, displays, catering - just got back from hanging road signs, so unless you are going to be the star attraction I'm not sure what's the best bit . . . . . . .

51st ANNUAL EXHIBITION – 2015

Last year we celebrated the 50th Annual Exhibition to be held in Mickleover, as the first was held in 1965 organised by members of St John’s Church. With 5 layouts, and an admission price of 1 shilling (that’s 5p in new money), that first show attracted over 1000 visitors and raised £45 for Church funds. Further exhibitions followed and the Club was formed in 1968, meeting every two weeks at the Church Hall. Many years later we moved to our current building at the Community Centre which has allowed most of our layouts to be set up permanently. All of the layouts on display today belong to the club, or are exhibited by our members. The club caters for all ages (but with children under strict parental supervision) and has members with a diverse range of interests and abilities. We meet on Tuesday and Friday evenings at our clubrooms at the Community Centre. We are now also promoting Transport related Film shows and ‘Trains Only Swapmeets’. Please ask any of our members for further details.

IN THE CLUBROOMS

DUFFIELD OO Gauge Club Layout

Duffield is the main Club layout. What you see today is the result of a great deal of hard work by a small number of club members working only a few hours each week. Work on the scenery has progressed since last year, with many more trees added and a hand painted backscene, by local artist and modeller David Wright (www.dovedalemodels.co.uk), it is not fully completed yet, but all great masterpieces take time. Over the past 12 months some of the signals on the main running lines have been automated to correspond with train movements. There is still a vast amount to be done and it will be a few more years before it will be regarded as finished. A variety of stock will be used, with most prototypical of Duffield over the years.

WARNER STREET O Gauge Club Layout

This layout is a double track main line terminus with two main platforms and a bay as well as a small goods yard. After some of the trackwork and scenic area was remodelled, the layout has a lot more operational potential. The layout is fed from a traverser which has also been modified. Much of this work was undertaken by the ‘junior’ members of the Club and some will be operating the layout today. The period to be modelled is not fixed, as a club layout has to cater for a wide variety of tastes although generally the bulk of operation will be BR steam and green diesels. The layout now incorporates a hand painted backscene, by local artist and modeller David Wright (www.dovedalemodels.co.uk),

HILLANDALE OO Gauge Club Layout

This is our main operating layout, which was planned to have 'scenery only' so that a variety of stock can be used, including UK outline OO, as well as Continental and American HO. The track spacing on the lower level has also been planned to accommodate larger scale On30 narrow gauge and the upper level has a circuit of 4mm scale OO9/Hoe narrow gauge that can also be used for N gauge. This means that a great variety of stock can been seen running on a club night although at exhibitions we try and ensure that matching stock is used! Digital Control (DCC) is available for those locos that are fitted and this also enables sound to be used.

IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE

TOWNEND O-16.5 7mm Narrow Gauge Jim English

A model of a minimum space terminus that could be anywhere in the country. The station is at the end of the town (hence the name) and trains arrive and depart at the whim of the operator. The layout is modelled to 7mm scale although it represents a narrow gauge line running on 16.5mm track. All stock is scratch built on OO chassis.

DERWENT VALLEY N Gauge Club Layout

A preserved 'might have been; line which could have connected Rowsley to the Dore and Chinley line through the Derwent Valley past Chatsworth House. This has now passed to a Preservation Society where they are holding a gala event in celebration of 40 years since the last BR trains ran on the line, and 25 years since preservation began. An intensive service will run using both steam and diesel locos as well as an occasional visit from Thomas.

BINDON HALT N Gauge Tony Clarke

This little layout is called Bindon Halt which was built primarily to occupy me after my main layout was packed away prior to a house move. Many years ago I had built a narrow gauge layout in a coffee table, and Bindon Halt is its successor, though in N gauge. It was mainly built for my wife and our grandchildren to enjoy and is a bit of fun with a lot going on in a small space. There will also be information about the Famous Trains Model Railway in Markeaton Park. Please ask for further details.

LAURIE’S LAIR N Gauge Simon and Laurence Weston

Set somewhere in the north of England, an ex-Army hidden storage facility, built around the Second World War, which is in the process of conversion to a Heritage site. There are sidings for shunting but the children - including older ones - like to watch trains go round and round, with one line climbing a steep incline then disappearing into a hidden entrance

RINGBURN OO Gauge Alex Hall

A compact OO layout set in Fife in the 1980s using the 'Speedlink' freight network serving the local businesses of McLintock,a paper mill and MOD depot. Other freight such as timber and grain will be seen passing through the yard. Track is Peco with buildings being a variety of kit and scratch built. Stock is a mixture of ready to run, kit and scratch built with everything detailed, repainted and weathered.

FRIARSGATE OO Gauge Alan Cheadle

The low level depicts the end of a run round loop for aggregate trains to and from a local (off scene) quarry. There is also a headshunt that leads to a small MPD. The high level crosses the lower level over two bridges and arrives at Friarsgate Station. The station consists of an island platform with wooden buildings and canopy. Motive power consists of classes 31, 33, 37, 56, 57, 60, 66, 97 & 150. Control is by DCC which means that each loco can be controlled individually

DEUTSCHLAND BATTENBURG G Scale Terry Melbourne

When the small town of Frankenberg Elder lost its railway station, there died with it the hopes of completing construction of a long awaited branch to Battenburg, famed for its cake and a branch of the British Royal Family that became Mountbatten. Fortunately due to the forward thinking of certain people it was decided that Battenburg should have a railway and the station is on display today. This layout shows a very large scale in a very small space!

THOMAS OO Gauge Club Layout

This is the first exhibition for our new Thomas layout replacing the old favourite which was the oldest layout we had in the Club built back in the 1980s when the TV series was just starting. This was long before Hornby produced the well known models that many youngsters now have at home. As you will see this is obviously still ‘work in progress’ and is being used to experiment in new scenic techniques. Please feel free to ask questions – and come back next year to see if it’s been finished!

DRIVE IT YOURSELF OO Gauge Club Layout

Another firm favourite with our younger visitors who can pop in 20p and drive their own train !

SCENIC DEMONSTRATION John Ward

John will be working on his latest creation and would be happy to explain the various techniques used. See examples of his work on the new ‘Thomas’ layout.

MODELLING DISPLAY Military Vehicles and Rail Mounted Guns Barry Carrington

Barry has returned with his popular display of a range of military vehicles built from plastic kits to a scale of 1:35. New this year are his models of the Rail Mounted Guns developed by Germany a hundred years ago to try and defeat the trench warfare of the Western Front. Many of these used the huge guns normally found on Battleships !.

MODELLING DISPLAY Military Figures Terry McDonald

New to the exhibition this year, Terry has brought along a range of military figures in a variety of scales covering many different areas to show the fine detail and the amount of effort put into getting the uniforms and accessories correct. Although he is no longer able to paint to this standard, several of his models have been prize winners in competitions.

MALC’S MODELS Trade Stand

Our local specialist model shop now operating from enlarged premises in Ilkeston, where they stock a full range of Model Railway items in all of the popular scales and gauges including American and Continental models.

RAILWAY BOOKSHOP Trade Stand

Chris carries the largest stocks of Railway Books and DVDs in the area, and a selection will be available from the stand today. Following his semi-retirement and closure of his shop, Chris is continuing to trade from home - please ask for his contact details.

JOHN KELSEY Trade Stand

Our local second hand specialist, John will have many ‘good as new’ items for sale, which will appeal to all our visitors covering most of the popular scales and gauges.

CLUB SECOND HAND SALES Mickleover Model Railway Group

A great variety of unwanted items being sold by club members to finance their next project. Who knows what you will find !

ECCLESBOURNE VALLEY RAILWAY ASSOCIATION Trade Stand

A sales and fund raising stand to support the development of our local preserved railway which runs between Wirksworth and Duffield featuring both restored steam and diesel locos.

REFRESHMENTS Community Centre

We are very grateful to the volunteers who are providing the refreshment services today. Hot and cold drinks and a variety of snacks will be available. If you live in the area, please visit the Old School Tea Rooms (Monday to Friday, 10.00am to 2.00pm) and support your local Community Centre.

See you in the morning. I think my first visit was in 67 or 68 to the 'old' (well it is now but was less than 10 years old then) St John's church hall on East Avenue. Brings back some memories as well going to the community centre - it was my old school from 1958 to 1960.

Best wishes with the exhibition Mike.

No continental layout from John H this year?

Pleased to see you are keeping up to date with us Peter - even after how many years . . ?

Quite right - nothing from John this year which is the first show in most peoples memory that he has missed supporting us. He has another event he's going to - I think he mentioned Sandtoft Saturday and Blackpool Sunday. He was there tonight but arrived after all the work had been done - like many others ! We do still have 'continental' but in a larger scale as there is a small G scale layout - it looks even bigger as it's next to a N gauge layout!

A nice little show and some bargains to be had indeed. Walked away with a nice rake of Airfix sixteen tonners, a dozen cars to give a bit more variety to my station car park as well as a few other bits and bobs.

I had a great day at the show yesterday helping Jim out operating Townend - a very enjoyable layout to operate.

A big thanks to the guys operating Warner Street for giving my Terrier a run throughout the day even though it definitely didn't fit in with the operating period!

Later in the day parked in the siding with one of my dumb buffered opens.

A big thanks guys - it was great to see it operating on more than 6ft of track for once!
