Hello everyone. A little bit more done on the landscaping.  Here you can hopefully see the land dropping off into a valley where the river will be using Woodland scenics realistic water.

I have made 3 more thinner low relief industrial type buildings than the two I have made previously to go behind the signal box as space is very limited!

I have also made an low relief IKEA building to fill a corner in the layout.

I have put some Tarmac signs up on the wagon loading tower.

As it is still early in the year the glues are taking over 12, sometimes 24 hours to go off fully so I do not want to do any ballasting just yet.  The good news is that the track is now nailed in position and everything seems to run ok over it.

Hi Peter

The layouts coming on in leaps and bounds mate. That river scene will look superb when it's finished. Top work indeed.

The driver of the Massey Ferguson seems a busy bee. He keeps popping up all over the layout. HaHa!!

Cheers

Marcus

I've just had a read through and this is a great layout Peter! Right up my street. You'll never get bored operating this with a depot, loading plant and station.

Your photography of the layout brings out the sweeping curves well, especially with a freight working trailing behind the loco.

Keep up the top work! :D

Jack.

Thanks Jack.  Unfortunately I am in limbo with the layout at the moment due to distorted track and some hard to reach places.  I don't know whether to start again completely with plywood and a 2 1/2 to 3 ft shelf or keep what I have got, un pin the track and relay then cut into the baseboards more to get hard to reach places.

I started my layout about 8 years ago in what looks like to be a garage the same size as you .. needless to say i went through three versions of a layouf until i ended up with whag i have now and that is a layout that runs around the outer edge of my garage ... this allows me to reach all parts of the boards .... you do need to make sure the support strips of wood under the layout are not to far apart so the boards do not sag .. and dont pin your track down to close when joining track i used a thin section of plastic to set a 1 mm gap this will allow your track room to expand as it gets warmer as i assume that you laid your track in the winter ?

Keep us up to date with your plans.

I agree with Anthony regarding supports and rail joints, and from your photos I think you could cut the boards back slightly if accessibility is an issue, due to the amount of space you've got to work with. Another option could be to create a space either side of the boards (so pull them away from the wall by a foot or so), allowing access from both sides.

Keep us posted!

Jack.

Thanks for the replies and advice Jack and Anthony. I have removed all the track pins tonight. Not sure whether to cut the boards away so I can access all areas or do a 3ft shelf layout around 3 sides of the garage. But is it possible to do a 3ft roundy roundy? I have an issue with picking up locos and turning them around by hand. I could uncouple them and run around the train but then I need two ugly couplers either end instead of nice detail packs on on end of the locomotive.

I think it depends on what you want from the layout, as if you want to run long trains and recreate the main line, then a roundy roundy would be the way forward. With the space available I'd suggest keeping the circuit, and possibly cutting the corners as below to still allow generous curves but also access to the corners if required:

post-21664-0-71949800-1495662188_thumb.png

I can understand the loco handling issue, I often worry about fingerprints and drops of sometimes very expensive locos. There are discreet coupling systems if you want run an end to end setup, although your options are limited to one or two features such as a station or quarry or loading point due to the space needed to run locos around the train.

A 3ft wide circuit is plenty of room, as long as there is space for generous corners. This might be the best option, but at the end of the day it's what interests you that you should base the layout on, it's a hobby to be enjoyed after all! :senile:

Keep us posted with any progress,

Jack.

With the weather being so bad this week and Autumn and Winter approaching I am anticipating that there will be less opportunity for photography so I am hoping to crack on with the model railway.  I have decided to make a new bridge for the corner of the layout which will incorporate a short tunnel to break up the track.  This will replace the other road bridge and Ikea building I made for this area.

The new bridge and tunnel  is in the background.  Typical that I have ran out of red brick building sheets.

I have also done some scenic work on the other side of the river.  A DRS 37 hauled special is passing over what will be a girder bridge.

I have started to make a backscene from some spare wood where the town center shops and buildings will be situated.  I have started to glue on the retaining wall made from card to the wood.  I need to do the footpath/road surface too.  Here are some photos of it so far with some container wagons below.

Good evening everyone.  A little more landscape done on the river this evening.  Not far off being ready to add Woodland Scenics realistic water but with the colder weather coming I might delay that until spring.

Good evening everyone.  Today I have been making a low relief quarry type building to go with the Bachmann loading tower I have.  Just some MDF cut to shape and different types of card stuck in the appropriate places.  It is not finished as I need to make a conveyor to go from the low relief building across to the loading tower plus some extra weathering and maybe some more heath and safety signs.  Here are a few photos below with a Colas Rail 66 preparing a train at the Tarmac site..

I have bought some more Metcalfe red brick so I was able to finish the tunnel in which the freight only lines pass through.  Still looks bare but I am happy with how this corner of the layout is developing.

Good evening everyone.  I have already made a TMD which I hope has some sort of likeness to Springs Branch in Wigan but I am in the process of making a new TMD which is a mix of ideas from Leeds Midland Road and the new TMD at Crewe Basford Hall.  I still need to make the roof and print off some signage for the new TMD.  I am not sure which design to go with so if anyone is reading this please let me know which TMD you prefer the look of.

Also I have done a bit more work on the bridge crossing the river by adding two extra strips of wood for the girder pieces to glue to.  I will probably try to spray this a lighter grey now it is put together.  I need to get some farm buildings and see where they can fit before completing the scenery seen in this photo.  Also realistic water can wait until next spring as I am worried it will never dry if I do it this time of year!

I am putting some pavement down for the town center low relief shops to sit on.  I am not having any road here as this part of the town center is pedestrianised.

Hi,

Just came across this thread for the first time and really enjoyed looking back at the progress and great work done. As a relative newbie to this hobby I am not sure I am truly qualified to give an opinion, but whilst both TMD are great, I think the new one looks disproportionally tall......the shape and overall effect is really good but to my eye it just seems to tower over the loco.

I am just halfway thru laying track and wiring my first ever layout, so if I end up with something half as good as you building, I will be delighted...........thanks for sharing your progress and for giving me some useful ideas and inspiration........cheers Richard

Hello.  I have done a little more scenery work.  Here is a photo of the signal box at Springfield Junction.  I have added a bit of greenery and some security fencing to segregate the signal box from the very low relief industrial units I have made that are behind the signal box.

post-25512-0-90492200-1511560556_thumb.jpg

I have also added a bit more greenery around the Tarmac aggregate site at Springfield which boasts two sidings with two rakes of wagons occupying them.

post-25512-0-96673100-1511560593_thumb.jpg

I have also added some more detailing to the new Freightliner depot I have made and I have started to concrete the depot yard which I need to take some photos of.  I have some more security fencing to put fence off the depot and yard from the two track main line.

Good evening everyone.  I have done a little more work on the town center and retaining wall. There is a small green park area where the shoppers can relax.  I will get some benches for this area at some point.

Made some advertising hoardings that I will probably stick to the town center retaining wall although Network Rail will probably have to organise a possession for the hoarding adverts to be changed!

post-25512-0-68790100-1511905477_thumb.jpg

Here is the class 60 entering Springfield Yard with a rake of loaded ballast wagons.  If you look at the back of the Freightliner depot I have made some solar panels like Freightliners Crewe Basford Hall depot has.

post-25512-0-32336000-1511905522_thumb.jpg

I have started to apply some concrete texture to the depot area.  I have also started to fence off the area from the two track mainline with some security fencing.

Hello everyone.  Here is a bit of an update on the layout.  For Christmas I got some Metcalfe low relief terraced houses that I have started to make, just need to add extra details like chimneys, porches and bay windows.  They are for this area in the photo below.

post-25512-0-21771800-1514732477_thumb.jpg

I also got some security fencing so I have installed this around the Freightliner depot.  I have also glued some health and safety signage to the fence.  The gates also open.  Below is a few photos of a DRS 37 passing by.

I have also finally made my Metcalfe farm house and I have a rough idea where the farm house and barn will be placed so I have formed the contours of the land dropping down from the farm yard to the field with plaster cloth.  Here is a photo of a Virgin Pendolino passing by this area below.

Here is a photo showing the approximate positions of the buildings.  Ignore the green frog tape and the blue paint!
