RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted December 31, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 31, 2021 Since finishing these two- there's always been an intention to complete a rake of stock for them to haul, I've just never got around to it ! So when Accurascale announced the two WCRC mk2's, that was the push I needed to get on with it. Me and Jack looked through our photo's of WCRC stock, and came up with a plan for a rake. We didn't want to try to faithfully copy any particular rake, but more like produce a 'typical' set of stock that included the elements we wanted. A mixture of Mk1's and mk2's was planned, with me thinking the mk1's can be Bachmann, and the mk2's all Accurascale.........but that plan didn't last long !! We decided on 5487-5478-1860-99350-AMETHYST-1961-13440-9104 as the rake. 5487- Accurascale mk2 TSO, on order, in the correct livery. 5478- Accurascale mk2 TSO, on order, in the correct livery. 1860- Bachmann mk1 buffet, on order, in the correct livery. 99350- Bachmann mk1 Pullman. Needs repainting into Maroon. I know this coach is now in Pullman colours, but I like the fact it was a much brighter Maroon shade than most other WCRC coaches ! AMETHYST- Bachmann mk1 Pullman. In Pullman livery. This coach is already under my workbench !! 1961- Bachmann mk1 kitchen. Needs various doors/windows/roof vents/etc, altering to match the prototype, and a repaint. 13440- Bachmann mk2 FK. Needs repaint. 9104- Bachmann mk2 BFK. Needs repaint. The thinking behind this was- cheap seats-cheap seats-buffet to cater for the cheap seats-really posh seats-really posh seats-kitchen to cater for the really posh seats-posh seats-posh seats with brake area. I'm a sucker for mk1 catering vehicles, so the chance to have 2 in a single rake was too good to miss ! 13440 is (I think!!) unique in the WCRC fleet, as a mk2 compo, so I wanted to include it. The mk2 FK & BFK that Accurascale are producing are of a different body style to the prototypes, but they match the Bachmann models. I'm hoping that with them being at opposite ends of the rake, any differences in shape, etc, isn't too noticable ! I already had a spare coach to produce the kitchen car. What this also means is, half the rake have lights fitted (TSO's & Pullmans), so the other half will need them.... The BFK might just end up with a tail lamp fitted too ! Oh, if anyone is wondering why there's a Green 57 in the photo above....it's been in the 'must find a use for this' box for ages.....so it's going to be WCRC's 57006. First up, the body of the Pullman car got a coat of White primer. I went for White, as I want this particular coach to be slightly brighter in colour than the rest, as it is in my prototype pics. I deliberately didn't rub down the paint line just below the windows, to see if I can use it as an aid for applying the transfers later on, it's in just the right place. Might not help, but I figured it was worth a try !! A coat of Maroon (with a couple of drops of Red added, to brighten up the colour) went on next... (and I want them quite glossy when they're finished.) Hopefully this pic shows the Pullman car is a slightly brighter shade of Maroon. But a little distraction has taken place..... Since finishing the MJA wagons, I've been on the lookout for some suitably sized tube to modify the couplings to reduce the gap between the wagons. A work trip to Norwich gave me chance to call in at Great Eastern models. Never been before, but it's a well stocked shop with friendly staff, so I'll call in again when I can ! ( no connection, just enjoyed the visit !! ) Anyway, some suitably sized Aluminium was purchased, and a coupling has been modified to see if its worth the effort ! To me, the standard couplings look a bit thin and leave too big of a gap between each pair of wagons. They are also the wrong colour, they should be the same Blue as the wagon body. Standard coupling- Modified coupling- Pics from above. Standard- Modified- I think it's worth the effort. Will take more pics as I modify the rest ! Well I weathered it after I'd moved the electrification flashes on one side, so they are where they should be, instead of the random place Hornby chose to put them ! Driver added, as well as a spare hi-vis in the cab, newspaper on the dash, and sunvisors. All handrails were also painted Silver. A full air-dam was added. Work has stalled on doing the WCRC rake, mainly because I haven't been enjoying it ! So I've distracted myself with adding tail-lamps to various things..... First up is this. Stripped down to component parts, to figure out what I'm doing. Lamp from a Bachmann mk2 aircon was added in place of the lam bracket. Plenty of Black paint added to stop the light showing through the plastic. All wheels are isolated from the axles, so I couldn't use axle-spring current collection. There's a nice convenient gap in which to run the pick-up strip though. Note, the wheels have had the blackening removed Drilled a couple of holes in the baseplate, to take the wires up into the body. Cut a square out at the end, to give access behind the lamp. I used an Illuminated Models Flashing Lamp kit with built in capacitor. I butted the LED up against the inside of the lamp, and ran glue around the edge to hold it in place, then covered it with more black paint, before re-building the wagon. I'd drilled through the metal chassis, and glued the lamp from the underneath. So it was a case of cleaning up the glue, and exposing the clear plastic of the lamp. I didn't use the LED supplied with the board, I used an even smaller one, so it would fit tight up against the clear plastic of the lamp. I actually had it powered up as I glued it in place, to make sure it wasn't shorting out on the metal chassis ! Before covering it in Black paint. Unscrewing the side of the wagon showed me the space I had to work with. No room for a circuit board with a capacitor, but if I cut out the internal bracing post, there was room for a board without one. Again, all wheels are isolated from the axles, so pick-ups were added to all wheels. With no capacitor present, I really wanted all-wheel pick-ups, so I cut slots in 4 places to allow the wires through, at the bottom of the internal slopes and the bracing. All wired up, ready for re-building. The pick-up wires run across the inside of the wagon, Which I figured was less obtrusive than running them underneath, where they'd show around the hopper doors. I used the circuit board with capacitor included, and as it holds enough power to keep the light flashing for at least 10 seconds, I only added pick-ups to one bogie. Running the wagons empty meant there's not much room to hide the board, but a bit of cutting got it far enough up to the chassis to hide it. To be able to mount the lamp in the correct place- The square boss on the back of the Bachmann lamp was drilled out from below, to accept one of the tiny LED's I have in stock. The LED was glued in place, and the boss was painted Black. While the paint was drying, the metal plate on the end of the wagon was removed, and a slot was filed in, just wide enough to accept the lamp boss. The plate was glued back in position, then a small hole was drilled from inside the slot, at a downward angle, to allow the wires to pass through into the cavity where the redundant close coupling cam mechanism goes. These wagons have got live axles, so DCC Concepts 2mm axle pick-up springs were used, much easier than fabricating pick-ups on the wheel treads !! Each bogie has a pick-up from each rail, just had to make sure the pick-ups were soldered to the appropriate point on the board to avoid a short ! All wired up. Don't judge too harshly, these are only the third and fourth 'people' I've ever painted !! I apologise for the terrible photography. 😅 Modelu figures. Before painting, I trimmed some of the supporting legs away, CAREFULLY.... All painted up.... Couple of pics after they had a 'wash' applied, to hopefully exaggerate shadows.... RMweb Premium Phil Mc Posted July 9, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted July 9, 2022 The layout was recently swapped from 'retro' mode to 'modern' mode, which always seems to throw up a few little maintenance jobs on rolling stock. Always fun to go through the stock boxes and unearth a forgotten piece too !! One of which is this..... It got sidelined due to an issue with the centre coupling bar. I've been fitting Hunt Magnetic Couplings to all our Freightliner twinsets, mainly Dapol FEA-B's, and so far they've worked really well, much better than trying to screw/unscrew the centre coupling bar every time !! Anyway, the problem with this wagon is the screw holes have worn so much that there's no thread left.... The 'fix' is easy enough to do. I first drilled through the centre of the boss, making sure the hole was the correct size for the original screw to cut its own thread... The slot in the end of the wagon.... Had the upper edge filed flush, to make an opening wide enough to allow the new coupling to pivot easily.... A rummage through the spares box found a couple of suitably sized washers.... Reassembled with the new coupling in place.... Top view.... As the wagon will run loaded, the screw's will be hidden under the containers. Containers will also have a bit of weight in them, to help roadholding, as this wagon is light ! Another little job done ! Weathering all the container traffic will be a mammoth job at some point, there's a wagon or two on order, and when they're released, it'll be 3, maybe even 4 rakes to do !! 😬 Didn't realise there was so many stashed away....😅 Cheers, Phil. 12 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
