RMweb Premium petethemole Posted March 30, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 30, 2016 A whole grid of large diameter piles going in then, assuming the red crosses mark the pile positions. It also answers the question as to why all that road stone was laid and compacted. It provides a firm and level surface for the piling rig and crane to work on, known as a piling mat. David Todd
I doubt, I will be able to get back up there today. So, these are the last set,for today. RMweb Gold The Stationmaster Posted March 30, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 30, 2016 (edited) There look's as if some serious piling work is about to be done. It will be very interesting to see how the work progresses. Jamie I hope they have better luck with those cylindrical piles than NR has had on the GWML (But I'm sure they will - this lot look as if they actually know what they're at). Although it in fact looks as if the tubes are part of the hole drilling kit rather than for use as finsghed piles - presumably they will first dig the hole(s) then add the rebar cage then add concrete and then use the straight rebar to construct a beam between the poured concrete piles. Not to worry, there will almost certainly be 24/7 security at the entrance to the site back up where the porta cabins are, that being the only exit / entrance to the site itself. Even for staff and NR personnel, they'll have a signing in / signing out point. No one would be allowed to simply wander in for a look.
RMweb Premium Simon Lee Posted March 30, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 30, 2016 News from Nigel Scutt's Dover Marina FB site. The plan of work is to install 100 x 30 meter tubular piles that will then be filled with concrete. On top of this will be laid a concrete raft for the track bed. The footbridge is to be reinstated using a GRP structure. No mention as yet as to any further sea defence works. Thanks t Nigel and his Facebook page for the info.
David Todd
Extract, from Nigels F/B Dover Marina.com added 2 new photos. 1 hr ·Dover Priory - Folkestone Central (Part 26):Piles......Bachy Soletanche is a leader in piling solutions, using a vast range of specialist rigs for the majority of sectors in the industry. As part of their impressive portfolio of completed projects, they will soon be adding the Shakespeare Rail works to the list, following the safe delivery to site of their piling rig by Chris Bennett Heavy Haulage on Easter Monday. So, what's the plan then?Well, to cut a long story short and mainly because I couldn't keep up with the conversation, Bachy Soletanche, using their Kelly Bar excavator and working with Costain and Network Rail, will be installing over 100 piles, 30 metres deep into the substrata which will then be filled with concrete (an awful lot of concrete in fact). Once that is completed, a concrete raft will be laid on the top of them, the track reinstated and normal rail services will resume. If you are local and have seen the large blue and white crane which has been on site for a while, this has now constructed the piling rig and will also be used to drop the casings into the piles. Approximately 25 cubic metres of arisings from each pile will be mucked away from site using engineering trains. It's a large project and one which will provide an enduring solution to the problems faced by commuters and other passengers since Christmas Eve. Apparently, Network Rail's Mark Carne has insisted on a long term solution rather than adopting a sticking plaster approach, fair play to him, I say.Once the works are completed a new footbridge will be installed, for access to the beach. This too, will be a lasting erection as it is to be constructed from Glass Reinforced Plastic. Please feel free to share the information, remembering where you read it first.....!Enjoy your evening.Nige

RMweb Premium petethemole Posted March 30, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 30, 2016 Augered piling isn't that noisy. I'd be worried if they were going for driven piling, due to the possible effect of the vibration on that rather crumbly cliff. The development of the West Quay shopping centre in Southampton involved driven piling on the retail park area, on reclaimed land. We had to fit vibration detectors on the medieval town walls and towers and monitor them. Fortunately no harm came to them.
sfbct15
So, do we know the timing for the repairs? it sounds like a long job to me, 100 piles to drive and fill, then to put the raft on top, I can easily see this taking 6 to 9 months? That's a guess, does anyone have a better idea? This would also seem to rule out single track working?

RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted March 30, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 30, 2016 The piles and concrete raft sort out the trackbed, is there any news on the seawall foundations which once exposed caused the original trouble. As to the timescales. I would suggest one pile per working day so that's 20 weeks plus the time to cast the raft and any crossbeams so 9 months sounds about right.
