JAMO
Hello all, After to have let down HO scale and before to be hooked by O scale, I was a N scale enthusiast (and still now). Here are some photos of my little N scale layout I've built for my home from 2003 to 2010. I shown it in a few exhibitions in France. I hope you enjoy. w124bob
Always nice to an Alco in any scale. What is the US modelling scene like in France ? Any NMRA branches?
JAMO
Ah, Alcos... my best loved locos in any scale. N, HO or O scale, I like the Alcos. On my layout most of the locomotive roster are Alcos (9 Alcos and 1 EMD NW-2). In France we are a minority to like US trains. I don't know if we have a NMRA branch, sorry. Most of the enthusiasts in France model SNCF and modern trains. A part models narrow gauge. We aren't a lot of modelers like in the UK. Here are more photos... All the buildings are scratchbuilt in thin cardboard or styrene.
Echo
Very nice! Could you show a track plan, please?
RMweb Gold TravisM Posted February 27, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 27, 2016 Nice layout and love to see a track plan. I seem to remember from travels in France ages ago that railway modelling was a very rare thing and model shops were like gold dust. I hope things have improved now. DanielB
Outstanding work Jack! I'd also love to see a track plan.
JAMO
Thank you to all! The trackplan... The layout is built in two parts (two bolted boards).
F-UnitMad
I've seen Jack's pics on another Forum, but have to add comments here - the standard of this layout is so high the photos are almost "guess the scale"!! There are only a few giveaways that it's N in some of the pics, usually wheels or couplings - other than that it could easily be HO at least. Fantastic stuff!! JAMO
Thank you Jordan. My layout is modest and I'm a simple modeler. A lot of modelers make better work than mine. It's possible to use low flange wheels in N scale. I use BLMA or like here FVM metal wheelsets. For the couplers, it's better to use M-T Z scale items. Here are N scale ones. Too big... but it needs a lot of work and money to install Z scale models
F-UnitMad
Wow!! Those wheels are good!! When I did N scale, finer wheels were just coming out, but they were plastic, & I didn't like them. Don't like plastic wheels in any scale, to be honest I also tried MT couplers, but they're so small in N I prefered to buy them pre-assembled, which is more expensive unfortunately. JAMO
Yes plastic wheels aren't good. I remember the M-T low flanged plastic wheels: I don't like too. The metal wheels are/look really far better. And rails stay clean for a more long time. About couplers I needed to be quiet and some time to arrive to assemble them. It wasn't simple from time to time. Trucks+couplers are interesting too. That was my simplest solution to save time. In O scale I like Intermountain metal wheelsets. Night Train
Lovely little layout. How long is it? What make are the Alcos?
JAMO
Thank you Night Train The layout is 8 foot long + the fiddle yard. The Alcos are repainted Atlas models. I've changed the wheelsets by Kato ones, to have better quality items (in nickel silver)
Night Train
Thank you. Is it easy to change the wheels?
brossard
Wow, that is impressive. I'm a bit of a wheel freak so I usually don't have much time for N. Your fine wheels look great. The look of the layout doesn't obviously scream N - congratulations. John
long island jack
what's not to like you run Alcos
JAMO
The Kato wheelsets are similar to the Atlas ones. In many cases, you just have to replace them... no more work is needed. I hope it helps.
