East Coast Mainline Blockade for Werrington Junction diveunder

Sunday 27th November

Views south from Hurn Road bridge. Speed limit signs for the newly laid points at Werrington Junction. Presumably there to allow the new points and ballast to settle in:

The newly ballasted track at the junction was re-tamped during early Sunday morning.

The Up Slow has been out of use since last weekend so it has had nothing running over it to bed it in.  During the week a section of track on the Up Slow south of Walton footbridge (somewhere opposite the old Sage's tower) has been lifted to replace a sinking trackbed.

I saw a Grand Central Class 180 emerge from the dive-under heading south. Are the new points not yet fully usable or is this a one off?

Diversions of ECML traffic have been in place via the Joint Line all weekend due to engineering work at Grantham.

They must intend to move some large and heavy machinery across that size of bridge. Perhaps preparing the ground for a building of some kind.

It's just for the obligatory burger van as far as I know.

I have not seen any planning applications for the land, the only hearsay is that Lloyds are developing the site.

Interesting that they have a plain top one on the end but don't have a fortyfive degree one to make the end of the second row pretty.  I'll have a look in my granddaughters Lego box to see if there are some going spare that I could donate.😀

Ahem, it's been in the awaiting decision box for about 8 months - https://planpa.peterborough.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?keyVal=RAMOZLMLLZP00&activeTab=summary

And it is Lloyds.

Thank you for the link Richard.  I was too far in the past looking from a different angle.

In 2007 my son was tasked with selling that land on behalf of his client for the use of warehousing.  Nothing became of the sale and his prospective customer bought the old Freemans distribution centre at Westwood instead.  In 2008 the field had acquired planning for a cold storage distribution centre but nothing ever materialised.  If that had been built then it would have been debatable if the new dive under could have been constructed.

Looking at the new plans, the proposed data centre building and layout is not dissimilar to the original cold storage building although the land area for the former is somewhat less now since Brook Drain and the railway have been re-aligned.

It is also of interest reading the accompanied documents in the planning of how much more detail is put into the different surveys compared to only a few years ago.  The Great Crested Newts rear their head again along with tree planting but no one mentions the deer who will lose their grazing grounds.

To be trusted then...NOT.

They built here on green land when our steelworks "downsized", along with Citizen printers.

As soon as the subsidies finished, they both upped and ran.

Hundreds of jobs lost.

Back in 1994 my then employer 'centralised' one part of their UK operations in Peterborough. They cited cheap premises (the same type of offices in the city I lived in at the time were cheaper), skilled staff (Peterborough was, and still is, primarily a dormitory town to London for staff with the skill set they sought), improved quality of life for staff (I went from working 35 hour weeks to working anything up to 60 hour weeks) and good North, South, East and West links. I'd tend to agree with North/South but East/West???

As soon as the 'deal' they'd negotiated with the building 'owners' expired they closed down the operation and relocated it to Glasgow/Brentford.

It is now over two years ago that work started near Walton footbridge to install an access gate to the roadway that was installed along the west side of the Stamford Lines from Cock Lane.

Some before and after photos from my friend Trackside ECML of how things have progressed since.

The paved area fenced off, this is 12 March 2021 a few months into the start.  The brick wall has been demolished and work is underway to construct a concrete slab.

By May 2021 the work had been completed, just tidying up to do.

By 12th January 2023, just the tidying up to do!

September 2021, gravel, hardcore and new kerbstones ready to go in.

You can’t rush these things

😁

There really is no excuse while this is taking so long to finish.

It is not setting a good example of keeping your surroundings nice and tidy to the local citizens either, especially when there is flytipping issues in the area.

With a name like McLaren you'd think they might go faster.😄

Hat, coat etc.

What I found amusing recently was Mercedes F1 were extending their facilities in the UK and the main contactor was McLaren (the builders, not the F1 team).
