GreenGiraffe22
I got inspired today by this photo of the Lancing Belle, I'd quite like to recreate with with Bachmann's SR E4s, although I'm not sure a 9 carriage train will fit on my circuit, maybe just, but there won't be much railway between the back and the front haha, a shortened version perhaps. Are those all Maunsells or several different types of carriages? I can't find any info or pictures of it in SR days
GreenGiraffe22
Also today I decided to look into what carriage I actually have , and it seems that by pure coincidence I have half of one set and half of another I have 3786 and 1218 from set 244, and 3723 & 7411 from set 209 , so now i'm on the hunt for the 4 carriages I need to complete the sets! GreenGiraffe22
As posted in the thread about the carriages, my Hornby 58' rebuilt Maunsells arrived yesterday and I love them! Haven't really done much to the scenery on the layout so it still looks messy. Edit: and a link to a short video on Twitter https://twitter.com/GreenGiraffe22/status/759414358086676482 Edited July 31, 2016 by GreenGiraffe22

Are those all Maunsells or several different types of carriages? I can't find any info or pictures of it in SR days They are not Maunsell coaches The 'Lancing Belle' was a train put on for railway employees only when the LBSCR moved its carriage works to Lancing from Brighton. As such the coaches that formed the train were always 'hand me downs' and stock otherwise retired from public use. I believe the rake of coaches in the picture were put together in the early 30s from pre grouping compartment stock (ex LSWR IIRC) displaced either by electrification or the cascade caused by new build Maunsell stock and this displaced an earlier rake which included 4 and 6 wheel coaches. Thank you Me and my partner have finally got around to getting on with sorting out the scenery, I found a Model Train Shop in Lancing "Morris Models" much nearer than trekking out to Gaugemaster in Ford. I shall post some photos later, I'm using weathered ballast instead of the clean grey stuff this time, I think it looks waaaay better!
Zomboid
Black locos with the sunshine SOUTHERN on them- can't go wrong with that, one of the finest color schemes we've had in this country. Best with the Malachite green coaches, but not too shabby with olive green either.
GreenGiraffe22
Black locos with the sunshine SOUTHERN on them- can't go wrong with that, one of the finest color schemes we've had in this country. Best with the Malachite green coaches, but not too shabby with olive green either. Couldn't agree more! I'm waiting patiently for Bachmann to release a sunshine E4, I don't really want to ruin one of the pretty green ones. I am, however, going to get B473 sent off to be renumbered to the later a more era appropriate 2473. Now, here are some photos taken just now of scenery progression, credit to my partner for the greenery, he is quite the artiste. I think the weathered ballast looks much better than the grey stuff, next on my list is the coal loading area next to the Q1 which is sat awaiting repair. If someone could point me in the direction of where I could get a suitable side-rod screw that would be much appreciated! I'd been having problems with the Q1 constantly unscrewing itself and eventually a screw fell out and disappeared into oblivion, it has been on the "to fix" list for a few months now which is a shame because aside from it unscrewing itself and not being very picky with which bends it can and can't negotiate, even with loads of the footplate shaved off that was causing it to ping itself off the track, it IS a really good runner! The only thing I don't like about the layout now is that the station entrance is contained by the goods yard with sidings siding backing on to it, you have to use your imagination and pretend the control hole is actually a huge town between the goods yard and the station and the sidings leading towards the platform are actually nowhere near it it was the only way I could, with the space I have, fit in a platform long enough to contain three coach trains, 4 coaches if I don't mind the engine being a little way out of the platform. Still, it is all just practise for when I have my own place and can do whatever I want with the space I have! I really with the turntable wasn't on there too, it is a terrible Peco one, I don't use it and it is generally just in the way, I might get rid of it if the circle cut out of the base board is lurking in the garage somewhere....

GreenGiraffe22
So, I started putting the coaling area back together, including a sprinkling of real coal to add to the realism, still work in progress. The trains are now running in the correct direction. And, for the first time, there was all olive passenger stock in my station. I'd like to make a nice entrance to the station with flower beds and such, probably have some armed guards and an air raid shelter too.
GreenGiraffe22
Hello all, long time since a last update I know, but there's not really been anything to say, other things have been going on I mainly just need to get more scenery, I am ever the self critic and am still not completely happy with the track layout but in such a limited space it is difficult. I might see if I can find the circular piece of wood that was cut out to fit the turntable because I never use it and it is taking up a lot of unnecessary space. I also need a couple of new points as some have started to play up, I think on future layout I am going to have as fewer points as possible because they're just too much hassle.Anyway. I took a video today of my 700 and C Class operating on goods trains, my C Class has become very very squeaky haha. https://twitter.com/GreenGiraffe22/status/783672331675832321 (probably best viewed on a mobile device) I am just eagerly awaiting some 2017 releases now, anyone got any idea when the new Southern E4 is due? I heard it was due in August but now we're in October and it is still at Pre Order status... One more thing, I need a new screw for one of my Q1's side rods, is it worth contacting Hornby or can I buy the right sort of screw in somewhere like Homebase?Anyway, I think that is all for now

You won't get those tiny screws in Homebase - or any other DIY shop either. If you can find out the exact type then it may be some of the more specialist model retailers would have something available - but I would say the best bet is to get in touch with Hornby. They should be able to say exactly what screw is needed and may be able to supply one too.
GreenGiraffe22
Twas my birthday yesterday, just treated myself to Bachmann's newer C Class 1294 from Rails of Sheffield as it is still on sale there for £84
RMweb Gold BlueLightning Posted October 23, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 23, 2016 Happy Birthday for yesterday. Hope you had a good day and enjoy your new purchase. Gary
GreenGiraffe22
Thank you looking forward to running the two C's together, in addition to the incoming E4 no. 2517 and later the H & H2 it's going to start looking much more South Easterly
GreenGiraffe22
So my second C Class arrived today, it looks so brand new and shiny next to my weathered one, that'll soon change! I also got a digital camera from my parents which I've taken some nice up to date photos on, however half of the photos (mostly the better ones) are over 1mb so I'll have to work out how to make them smaller... Anyway here are some that are under 1mb, a bit more scenery has been added. I've decided this layout is really just a test bed that I'm trying to make look as real as possible... plans are underway to remove the turntable.
RMweb Gold BlueLightning Posted October 26, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 26, 2016 Really looks good. Would love to see some more shots. Regarding file size what I do is copy the file and then with the second one I the resolution down to 1000 x 600 pixels which is fine of web pictures. This is usually and easy job depending on what picture editor you use. I don't mind doing it for you if you want. Let me know. Gary
GreenGiraffe22
Huzzah! did it Lots of weathering on rolling stock still needs to be done but I've gotta be in the mood for it...My poor Q1 still remains without the side rod screw it needs, I have emailed Hornby but I've heard what their "customer care" can be like... I will also get around to repainting that terrier so the number and lettering is in the right place, unless I manage to find a limited edition sunshine one Dapol released once upon a time... made the photos 1000 x 750, it's put them waaay under the max size Edited October 26, 2016 by GreenGiraffe22
RMweb Gold BlueLightning Posted October 26, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 26, 2016 Really looking good. Although it wouldn't fit in with my current modelling I really do envy your ability to weather your stock so well. Gary
GreenGiraffe22
Thanks I'd like to say there's a lot of skill involved but my technique is dipping a paint brush into weathering powder and slapping it on! The sooty effect does work well on black locos, I haven't tried doing anything to the green E4, yet... Also here's a link to a short clip of the two Cs https://twitter.com/GreenGiraffe22/status/791276181148536833 I've tried embedding Twitter videos into forum posts but this forum doesn't seem to be compatible with Twitter's coding...
Unicorn1
Hi With regard to your Q1, Peters Spares should have the screw(s) your looking for. Just google Peters Spares and search for Q1. If your still not sure give them a call. Usual disclaimer - just a satisfied customer. All the best Les
RMweb Gold BlueLightning Posted October 26, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 26, 2016 They look so good going round. Really smooth running. GreenGiraffe22
Thanks again that original C has developed a squeak, I'm not entirely sure which bit of the mechanism is causing it but I kinda like it, I've heard real life steam engines make similar noises I still get problems with Dapol wagons but it's totally random, that South & Glasson wagon at the front of the inner circuit goods train, for example, it bounces off on one bit of track but only on every like, 5th circuit of the layout or so, sometimes I think they're alive and there is some truth in Thomas the Tank engine 'troublesome trucks' ....
