Ronald48
Already searches in my stash for rolling stock that will participate in the coming shows. There is some old stuff and some new stuff. Most is weathered by a friend from many years ago: 20160802_201727 by Ronald-45, on Flickr The weather was too bad to spray-paint the bridges today. Ronald48
Painted the 2 bridges today. Ready for the big job: 20160805_181315 by Ronald-45, on Flickr And the first one in iron: 20160805_181645 by Ronald-45, on Flickr The first set dry: 20160805_185449 by Ronald-45, on Flickr And both ready: 20160805_192234 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Also got myself a 72 ft centerbeam fdrom walthers through the German Ebay site: 20160805_144947 by Ronald-45, on Flickr More to come! Ronald48
Yesterday evening I did a test mockup with the iron-coloured bridges: DSCN7069 by Ronald-45, on Flickr After dinner today I painted the swingbridge base: 20160806_191600 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Grey colour is on: 20160806_191718 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Some grey went through the seams of the tape so I had to redo some of the black on the round part: 20160806_193007 by Ronald-45, on Flickr The wooden part had to be primed first: 20160806_192134 by Ronald-45, on Flickr 20160806_192405 by Ronald-45, on Flickr And painted grey: 20160806_201418 by Ronald-45, on Flickr The result: 20160806_201540 by Ronald-45, on Flickr And a loco on on of the truss bridges: 20160806_185005 by Ronald-45, on Flickr More to come
Ronald48
Did some stuff today. Painted the bridgewall on the right: 20160809_113728 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Still too dark I think, it has to be lighter. Same story on the left side: 20160809_114046 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Also detrmined the swing of the bridge and draw that on the layout: 20160809_115438 by Ronald-45, on Flickr 20160809_121545 by Ronald-45, on Flickr This is already for work to come. And then the trestles. The right one is the first to build. To determine how it "flows" in the layout I have to make a drawing starting with a piece of A4 paper: 20160809_131855 by Ronald-45, on Flickr The beginning on both sides: 20160809_132138 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Determined with this old tool that belonged to my dad: 20160809_132150 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Then i went inside to draw the track: 20160809_132428 by Ronald-45, on Flickr The width of the deck drawn in place: 20160809_133322 by Ronald-45, on Flickr And glued it to a baseboard: 20160809_134735 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Ow....... made a mistake. Had to be in mirrorview because I want to build from this base up-side-down. So I made a mirror image: 20160809_134743 by Ronald-45, on Flickr First there will be the ties, then the beams which carry the ties and after that the legs. The whole thing will then lie with its legs up. A test with the ties, they will be 4,6 mm from eachother, I will take 5 mm as determined with the kits parts: 20160809_140241 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Total view so far with the plans and stuff needed to make this plan: 20160809_143017 by Ronald-45, on Flickr First staining the wood, will do that later this week. Ronald48
Stained the first trestle kit today. I use a grey/blue woodstain that I have for years now: DSCN7071 by Ronald-45, on Flickr And after 1,5 hour all 4 sizes are drying. Ronald48
Yesterday we started the wiring of the ledstrips. My friend Ronald helped me with that. He is far better in electronics than I am, and why not accept help? I know that this time the wiring of the layout will be A1 quality. Ozexpatriate
Ronald, I like the set up. What did you use as the side protection on the corner module? Is that thin MDF or something else? What's the thickness? I'm interested to see how your background works out. It's hard to tell precise colours from your photographs of course. What time of year/weather conditions are you modelling? I plan to be driving under that bridge in about two weeks. I'd offer to stop and take pictures, but I don't know what my transportation arrangements will be. (Actually I'd love to do it but I might be riding with someone less understanding about such things including young children with an unknown level of crankiness and an excitement to get to the ocean.) (Actually I'd love to do it but I might be riding with someone less understanding about such things including young children with an unknown level of crankiness and an excitement to get to the ocean.) Michael, I used 4 mm plex for the sides. It comes in our home depot in sheets of 122 centimeters by 61 centimeters. I let the cut shortwise, that is strips of 61 centimeters long. That way I follow the grain of the sheet so that it will follow the rounding better. Background; I'm very afraid to start.... But I have a slight advantage in this. In 2013 a guy here in Holland who is model railroader and artist painted the backdrop of my 1:55n3 Civil War layout. When he painted it I took pictures and did listen well to him. So I have a sort of "guide" that hopefully helps me. 8550108398_2c795b7d74 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Oh, and I got a dvd from Joe Fugate, he describes very well how to paint a backdrop 20160824_115238 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Offer; great!!! Ronald48
Today a big update which starts on wednesday. there I made the connection points to the staging yard: 20160831_161742 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Nails and glue: 20160831_130627 by Ronald-45, on Flickr And in place: 20160831_131007 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Both are ready: 20160831_162851 by Ronald-45, on Flickr And the workspace, weather was great this week and gives me the space I need: 20160831_164235 by Ronald-45, on Flickr For the legs of the stagingyard I needed 6 cm more height. Therefore I made these from 9 mm plex: 20160831_175502 by Ronald-45, on Flickr 20160831_175910 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Measuring the place for the set: 20160831_175916 by Ronald-45, on Flickr And one ready: 20160831_201448 by Ronald-45, on Flickr And some more: 20160831_201521 by Ronald-45, on Flickr At night my friend came by to work on the electric: 20160831_192715 by Ronald-45, on Flickr 20160831_202320 by Ronald-45, on Flickr 20160831_204313 by Ronald-45, on Flickr 20160831_210711 by Ronald-45, on Flickr 20160831_222115 by Ronald-45, on Flickr The connection cables between the modules: 20160831_222136 by Ronald-45, on Flickr 20160831_222156 by Ronald-45, on Flickr 20160831_222205 by Ronald-45, on Flickr White strips working: 20160831_220009 by Ronald-45, on Flickr The last leg finished in the dark: 20160831_205640 by Ronald-45, on Flickr With some drinks: 20160831_213353 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Also got the power unit from China, it has 10amps. A second one is on the way: 20160830_224117 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Thursday: still great weather. Today I have to adjust the staging yard, so I made 2 sets of modules: 20160901_100847 by Ronald-45, on Flickr All on the ground to line everything up: 20160901_103114 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Connections are made with 10 mm bolts: 20160901_105607 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Connected the pieces that holds everything in line: 20160901_130236 by Ronald-45, on Flickr And then all up on its feet: 20160901_130542 by Ronald-45, on Flickr 3rd piece: 20160901_133513 by Ronald-45, on Flickr And I'm satisfied: 20160901_134419 by Ronald-45, on Flickr A quick test: 20160901_141732 by Ronald-45, on Flickr 20160901_143302 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Made the connections for the booster(s): 20160901_145600 by Ronald-45, on Flickr 20160901_145621 by Ronald-45, on Flickr 20160901_145409 by Ronald-45, on Flickr This way I can connect it on both sides if necessary. After that I had to made the connections of the round modules to the staging. I srewed them temporarely to each other: 20160901_152505 by Ronald-45, on Flickr 20160901_152716 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Other side: 20160901_155036 by Ronald-45, on Flickr 20160901_155041 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Legs are ready and tight together for the first show end of October: 20160901_163644 by Ronald-45, on Flickr At night my friend came back and brought some Roco modules with him for the turnouts. I mounted and programmed them: 20160901_195848 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Special Roco connectors: 20160901_205817 by Ronald-45, on Flickr 20160901_210419 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Me hard at work, night caught up with us: IMG-20160901-WA0003 by Ronald-45, on Flickr And then its friday, I started by removing 1 turnout on each side of the staging. That way I create 1 long spur that starts on either side just next to the front modules. The first one: 20160902_102825 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Some stuff removed: 20160902_110232 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Removing the solder pins: 20160902_111036 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Fitting a new piece of track to go straight: 20160902_112420 by Ronald-45, on Flickr En verder door op de 2e module. Ik heb gekozen alles vast te zetten met 2,5 mm schroefjes met een 3 mm plaatje eronder. Ronald48
Today I finished the 2nd corner module: 20160903_154245 by Ronald-45, on Flickr 20160903_155822 by Ronald-45, on Flickr My friend did some tuning with the led strips, not every piece did what it had to do: 20160903_155835 by Ronald-45, on Flickr 20160903_165318 by Ronald-45, on Flickr This was what I had left over from 11 flex rail: 20160903_164218 by Ronald-45, on Flickr And my friend had all strips work correctly at the end of the afternoon: 20160903_171303 by Ronald-45, on Flickr These things where under the staging yard, build by a previous owner. I re-used them: 20160903_164831 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Controllers are on the back, a fixed one for white and a RGB controller with wireless control: 20160903_171613 by Ronald-45, on Flickr And I had my corner modules ready: 20160903_171835 by Ronald-45, on Flickr And already time to go: 20160903_174104 by Ronald-45, on Flickr My friend gave me some "homework" for preparing some work. I quickly mounted the cables for the turnouts which are going to be controlled from the staging yard DCC controllers: 20160903_191016 by Ronald-45, on Flickr And the cable mounted: 20160903_191504 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Marking and numbering: 20160903_193207 by Ronald-45, on Flickr At the turnout side: 20160903_193241 by Ronald-45, on Flickr And the two are almost ready: 20160903_195339 by Ronald-45, on Flickr More to come! Ronald48
A job that is on the to-do list is the adaption of my DCC stuff. The wiring has to be replaced because I'm suffering under some strange flaws that causes shutdowns on the layouts that are used with it. This is the one: 20160905_161431 by Ronald-45, on Flickr The XpressNet wiring. Not acceptabel: 20160905_164242 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Too thin: 20160905_164624 by Ronald-45, on Flickr The old wiring out: 20160905_170025 by Ronald-45, on Flickr And started the new wiring.: 20160905_184218 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Made a carrier for the connectors: 20160905_190913 by Ronald-45, on Flickr 20160905_191115 by Ronald-45, on Flickr 20160905_191120 by Ronald-45, on Flickr And connected to the wiring: 20160905_193359 by Ronald-45, on Flickr And almost ready: 20160905_195305 by Ronald-45, on Flickr A while ago I made a second case with 2 extra boosters and a interface. This also got new sturdy wiring: 20160906_100753 by Ronald-45, on Flickr And the connectors for the boosters and cde connection: 20160906_105733 by Ronald-45, on Flickr 20160906_112024 by Ronald-45, on Flickr Both cases ready: 20160906_112519 by Ronald-45, on Flickr And connected: it works!: 20160906_114209 by Ronald-45, on Flickr I now have sufficient power on my layouts. For this layout I will use 2 boosters; 1 foor the front modules and the corner modules, and 1 for the staging yard. That way the load on everything is balanced. Also got me some chinese panel indicators for the leds. Works good, first pictur is the load on 60%, the second on 100% (only white): 20160907_100846 by Ronald-45, on Flickr 20160907_100852 by Ronald-45, on Flickr More to come!
