Yesterday I started building the long trestle. It will be build in one piece allthough it spans 2 modukles. They will be kept attached the coming months.

Ready for building!:

After a few hours you have the necessary carriers for the first part of the trestle:

30266773555_c2536ef4ce_c.jpg20161011_145301 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

After that I started laying the ties on painters tape layed upsidedown:

29636188194_1fee2700ee_c.jpg20161011_154958 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

And ready:

30231866086_8a7246ddf7_c.jpg20161011_162945 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

The beams under the ties are made of 3 pieces glued together:

Letting it dry:

I'm short of these planks, so I made some myself:

Started with the shortest beams:

30266773645_6d7669b24d_c.jpg20161011_201739 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

The 4 long ones had to be cut to get a smooth curve::

And the result after drying:

The whole thing took almost a day. In the evening I started putting things together:

30266773915_639a550ebb_c.jpg20161011_215747 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

It looks like a bridge:

29636188814_96d9b60895_c.jpg20161011_223148 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

That was yesterday, now  today. First a test fit on the layout:

29647575474_a597753dd6_c.jpg20161012_092431 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

When looking carefully you see the legs on the left hanging off the floor. that is because the building plank lies on the railhead of the track on the left.

I'm satisfied but I see a problem on the right. one leg has te be set a liitle towards the other:

30162497452_f66a6d0b92_c.jpg20161012_093053 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

Mu building jig for the different hights:

30162496562_2e3e8ed8bd_c.jpg20161012_100037 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

And test fitting:

29647576114_5bbc313a67_c.jpg20161012_112722 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

And almost all legs in place:

30162497322_6db8fd296e_c.jpg20161012_121238 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

All in place except the reinforcements:

30162497622_ee791ace27_c.jpg20161012_124723 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

It's a impressive buid:

Tomorrow the rest of it due to a visit today. More to come!

That's quite a fabulous looking tree.

I'm not sure if you are shooting for the appearance of the Douglas Fir. The Douglas Fir is ubiquitous in Oregon (west of the Cascades) and no tree says "Oregon" to me more than the Doug Fir. We even have them on our licence plate and they are used by the "Cascadia" regional separatist movement.

They are a bit more straggly and less bushy than your tree, particularly at the top.

I'm sure I can come up with photos if you like.

will be interesting to see how you do the joint on the trestle between modules and keep the track aligned

Ray

As I understood it he intends to keep it as one piece   ' It will be build in one piece although it spans 2 modules. They will be kept attached the coming months.'

@Michael; yes please :)

@Ray; it is as Mick says. The 2 modules will be attached to each other. The layout will do some shows short after another so it is better this way for damage etc. After that I will consider the break-up and alignment of the bridge :)

Thanks guys for you input!

Yesterday I finished the trestle, here she stands still with the building plank:

30026387810_b79f9a99bc_c.jpg20161013_103533 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

After removing the plank it seemed that there was a soft spot in the construction, I glued in a reinforcement:

30026388620_137b818bb0_c.jpg20161013_104614 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

Then I test-fitted here on the layout:

29692534453_154e6ba369_c.jpg20161013_105102 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

Allthough I measured as secure as I could there was a 5 mm highth difference on the left side....:

30026388310_e668904a0c_c.jpg20161013_111259 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

A slight panic took me... together with my wife Wanda we looked at what could be adapted the best, we decided that taking out some pieces of land would be the best solution without loosing a lot of time:

30026388210_6f4eff2f9b_c.jpg20161013_113207 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

Painted them landscape color:

30026390200_5e968e9573_c.jpg20161013_114650 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

And now it fits:

I'm satisfied. it looks like the real thing and allthough not that long this will do fine.

Made 2 wires so that I can attache the bridge to the underside of the modules:

Ronald,

Everywhere I look I see Douglas Firs. It's been an odd experience trying to find one to photograph. They are literally everywhere you look, but I can't find one i like.

It's actually hard to get a good picture of one, they really like to stick together (it's sort of their thing, naturally they reproduce by dropping cones) plus it's been raining non-stop all week, and sunset is earlier now too.

I did snap these when the sun came out yesterday.

They're pretty representative.  They're hard to model. Sometimes branches point up slightly, and sometimes they hang down. Sometimes they're really straggly, and sometimes they are more bushy. Introducing some deliberate asymmetry will capture their 'look' well.

I'll see if I can find a good solo tree - weather and daylight permitting.

Made the second rail to the trestle:

30473020105_70ba118e0a_c.jpg20161018_103838 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

For time sake I used normal rail for the short bridge and not the provided bridgetrack:

For now I use normal railjoiners to provide the bridges with power:

And dry:

Toned down the background with a airbrush and added a "stripe" of white above the landscape. First masking:

Some work done but not totally satisfied. The bridge does not turn properly so I have to alter some things after next weekends show. Untill that the swingbridge hangs between the other two with 4 railjoiners.

Photo's. Made room for feeders on the bridge track:

  • 3 weeks later...

Hello guys, I'm behind on my topic..... forgot the last photo's. On the 25th of October we did some stuff. Painted the rail:

Did some ballasting on the right side, Dry:

And wet:

My wife Wanda did a fast batch of bushes:

Different colours:

And a box full:

For the show I taped the loose parts to the bridges:

On the 26th of October we did some green work in the morning. I did the left side:

My wife did the right side:

She build the trees in some weeks and we planted them in 15 minutes.... but worth the effort!

On the 27th we drove to the expo in Utrecht and set up the layout. Front:

And back:

It is always a sort of puzzle when you set it up for the first time but it went on fairly easy. Staisfied we returned home that night.

After that we had the 3-day show called "Eurospoor" in the Jaarbeurs Utrecht in the Netherlands. The respons was very good and we drew a lot of attention. I also had it showed in a Dutch forum so a lot of these viewers came by.

Problems: a few but managable. The turnouts on the round modules didn't put up to their expectations. They need to be replaced by curved turnouts. Further we experienced problems on the 3rd day with the usb connection between my Windows 10 laptop and the Lan/usb interface from Lenz. We will change this connection by Lan cable, that way it seems the connection between the system and laptop will be sturdier.

A guy here in Holland called Dirk makes a lot of Youtube movies of our layouts and he also made one of Cushman:

And some pics of the setup on the show:

Yesterday we put the layout up again in the garage. A few things need to be fixed and some stuff still isn't finished. Coming week I will do that so that the layout will be representable for Warley. We also will put more trees and bushes on it:

To this point I want to thank everybody for following me. I hope to see some of you at the Warley show end of November in Birmingham.

Greetz, Ronald.

This week I did work on the swingbridge. It has to line up properly and it needs support from the piers.

First on the left some fillig up under the support of the bridge, made them from 1 mm square styreen:

30998660471_d6af8b0aa4_c.jpg20161117_133617 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

The suppport for the swingbridge is made from strips of 1 mm styreen glued together:

30745340800_72c7bd0a5e_c.jpg20161117_140646 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

It looks like this:

30305845003_bf07a620ac_c.jpg20161117_144452 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

Where the swingbridge hits the pylon I rounded the corner:

30305844783_5c148576b2_c.jpg20161117_153124 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

And as total:

30998661141_c1222630e8_c.jpg20161117_163936 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

Today I went on, one of the wires was broken and had to be fixed:

30305845293_1c2c0428a7_c.jpg20161119_155700 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

Then I lined the bridges out and shimmed the height with thin 0,25 mm styreen:

30745341920_489aec4b21_c.jpg20161119_162630 by Ronald-45, on Flickr

And sanded it round:

Now its lined up perfect. left:

Tomorrow my wife will plant some green she made and after that its done for Warley. Still a lot to do after the show but time wasn't enough to do it all. The layout still needs detail, some weatheing and the right side of it still needs a boat house.

The last update before I leave on my journey to the Island will be tomorrow! :)
