Mystery tank loco identification

Recommended Posts

Apologies if this isn't the right forum, but I'm trying to identify a steam tank loco from a single, rather small, photo.

It's the last photo on this page.

What is evident is:

- It's a large tank loco (small dome to stay within the loading gauge)

- Flat footplate

- The tanks appear to protrude more than the bunker

- Belpaire firebox

- Boiler handrail continues up and over the smokebox door

- Possible early BR logo on the tank side

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The connection to modelling is that a friend wishes to model a section of the LMS north of Macclesfield and would like to run prototypical loco types.

It is indeed an A5 and there is a Craftsman kit (plus a whitemetal one from NuCast). More recently 52F models have introduced a much more detailed and "state of the art" kit. The Craftsman kit goes together very easily but does have some dimensional errors around the bunker width.

You have to be a bit careful as there were two versions. The one that Mick has shown is the LNER built one (some were built after grouping for the North Eastern area) which had some subtle differences.

52F do both versions. The one in the photo on the website is almost certainly an A5/1 which was the original GCR version.

My question about this is whether an A5 would ever have run on the ex-LMS lines north of Macclesfield. The article linked to is about the GC joint line to Macclesfield.

The two stations at Macclesfield were both quite compact and therefore suitable for a model.
