As an aside, I am after a knackered Ratio GWR 4-wheel coach. It does not need to be a runner as it will serve in a grounded role.

Do you mean Slaters?

And no, you can't have these,

However.........

If any of these are of use let me know, I think I might have the roof as well,

Love what you've done with the Fowler diesel conversion. I seem to recall reading some notes you'd done on that on an earlier thread somewhere? Must go and find it.

Hi Chris,

Well I've been all over this thread, the Ixion thread (even the Minerva thread just in case!) but can't find anything about the conversion of that Fowler. Am I imagining that you'd posted any details? If so, any chance of an insight as to how and what you did? It looks to me like you swapped the cab to the opposite end as well?

Peter,

I meant Slater's. The unpainted (or primed) pair bottom right and a pair ends would be ideal. Let me know how much you want and I'll send you my address on a PM. Alternbatively, I'll be on the Minerva stand at Kettering next Saturday if you are going.

Regards,

Chris

Rich,

Here is the link with a blow-by-blow account of the Fowler conversion. It was done without drawings so really is a lash up job. The cab spectacles are wrong and I probably ought to rebuild it. If I knew anything about 3D printing I'd try make it into a kit.  http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/110326-ixion-fowler-diesel-conversion-bodgers-away/

Hope this helps,

Hi Chris,

Having just followed your link to the Fowler conversion blog ('Ixion Fowler Diesel Conversion - Bodgers Away'), I came across BrianR's (br2975) post there (#20), showing the John Fowler WD 0-4-0 'ROF Bridgend No.4'.  What interested me, was the provision of headlamps at both ends, as I am thinking of including such things on a loco of my own.

However, my question/observation is regarding that actual loco's headlamps.  There appears to be a solid rod running from an actuating lever on the side of each lamp housing, back to the cab front (possibly also a support/guide halfway along the bonnet as well?).  Can it be that the driver on this loco can alter the angle of these lamps, from a distance setting to perhaps even to looking down towards the couplers?  Might be to help the shunter during operations at night?  Interesting inovation if true and one I have not seen before -  maybe this could be controlled by DCC on a model (LOL)?

Steve

EDIT:  Just had a thought, they aren't 'blackout' hoods are they?

Hi Chris,

Thats great - I'm feeling inspired after reading that.  Not sure if it will fit with my plans for DCC given the minimal space for decoder/speakers etc, but hey-ho we might just give it a go!  Could be a nice little shunter for the Arksey Colliery Railway :)

Thanks for taking the time to find that for me - didn't think of looking in the 7mm thread! Duh!

I usually have a small indoors project running concurrently with the heavy work on Cwm Bach or Tonfanau Camp in the garage. Today, I started on the gates for the level crossing on Tonfanau Camp that governed movement on the road from the main army camp to the ranges on the beach. I am scratchbuilding the gates. They are made from 40 thou plasticard cut into strips and laminated in three layers. I copied the idea from a gate given to me by Chaz Harrison of Dock Green fame. It is a simple design that results in a very rigid structure. There was quite a bit of trimming to get the pieces to fit closely and where gaps remained, I used some Humbrol filler. Total cost of the project so far is about 20p and two hours work, which compares rather well with the price of the commercial offerings. The gates will be made to open and close, but I need to stock up on some brass materials at Kettering on Saturday to finish the project.

Chris,

It was a pleasure to finally meet up with you, as well as renewing my acquaintance with Chris B today at Kettering.

Sadly I was unable to return in the afternoon, to pull up a sandbag and swing the lamp with you telling ever more boastful war stories!

The in progress 8750 pannier really looked the business, and I am looking forward to seeing the prototype running on both Cwm Bach and Tonfanau very shortly before my production run version is delivered.

Can't wait is an understatement!

Likewise Richard. Never mind about the sandbag as there is always another time and the great thing about war stories is that they never fade way. Indeed, they only continue to grow until they become unbelievably tall, or so my children keep telling me.

Chris

P.S. It  seems that that our mutual acquaintance, Gus the Gorilla, has hidden some name and numberplates I ordered from Narrow Planet.

Chris,

Great to chat today.

The pannier absolutely looks "the business", and I too am looking forward to adding a couple to the roster at PD.

Hi Dave, below in my signature - "latest loco exploit". Do drop in!

Ahh - only visible with Signatures set to visible. I have turned them off to avoid the repetitive c**p from some posters that fills my screen. The downside is missing the occasional pearl!

I have finished constructing the level crossing gates for Tonfanau Camp. The gates are hinged, but I'm not setting up the crossing for remotely controlled operation of the gates. They will be moved mostly for photographic reasons using dasfingerpokenmitkursundshweren. The lamps are from the Ixion Fowler diesel accessory pack and await the lenses. All that remains is to paint and plant. Total cost well less than £1.

The weather is fine here so I'm off to the garage to do some ballasting on Tonfanau Camp; there really is no limit to the excitement on offer in Chandler's Ford.

Regards,

CK

Work on Tonfanau Camp is progressing and I think in the next week we will start to see some scenic dressing on the layout. Today was spent stitching together some photographs to form a panoramic backscene. The backscene depicts a grey sky in keeping with the name of this thread. This is a prototypically correct skyscape using photos taken at Tonfanau by Andrew Young. I am very grateful to Andrew as grey clouds from another location simply would not have looked right.  I stitched the photos together in a free web-based application with the impressively descriptive name "Photo Joiner". https://www.photojoiner.net/merge-photos The programme is very simple to use and I was finished in under five minutes. I then opened the file in Photoshop for some further cosmetic work around the join and resizing of the file.

I have commissioned my local printshop to produce a backscene 12' x 2'. It will be printed in one piece on vinyl and will have eyelets along the top to enable it to be hung from a lightweight frame. The bottom edge will be held in place with velcro attached to the baseboard frames. The resulting structure will be light in weight and quick to erect and dismantle with no unsightly joints. It will be ready next week and I will post more photos when I have built the supporting contraption.

Please note the photo here is a reduced size file to fit on RMWeb. The original is a 456MB TIFF file.

Stand by for further Charlie Charlie One sitreps.
