Rivahornby are doing some wagons, sorry boxcars, too.

It’s a welcome sign that they haven’t given up the US/NA market which by last year, it looked as though they had.

It would surely make sense for them to develop these assets?

Not really sadly.

Elsewhere the U25C are being savaged for paint scheme errors, and this is among a group who liked the first run and were hoping for more from Hornby.  A sign perhaps that the loss of their NA expert has consequences (and an assumption the position was eliminated when the first withdrew from the market).

The Big Boy is also strange.  Either it is a re-listing as new of existing unsold inventory or it is a questionable move - the market has been flooded with Big Boys for the last several years so demand for yet another run would seem unlikely.

So maybe an attempt to make some money from an existing asset, but nothing that is likely to really result in much excitement.

More generally, and my opinion and thus perhaps wrong, is I think Hornby are missing an opportunity.

Yes, I understand their financial problems and that the UK market is getting crowded, but I think their tunnel vision on the UK market is costing them.

A comparison of the UK market and the North American market and it is remarkable how little new tooling is happening compared to the UK - and if you eliminated Rapido the number would drop significantly.

I think there is opportunity in the North American market for certainly 1 if not more companies to be adding new models, and that essentially money is being left on the table.

They're fundamentally different markets.

Many (not all) N. American modellers take a "looser" approach to historical and operational accuracy than British modellers do which means the market for detailed scale models is probably smaller despite the USA having a much larger population. Then there's the enduring popularity of three-rail O Gauge which takes up quite a large share of the market, so much so that quite a few models were available in O Gauge before they were in HO.

Don't forget that the US dieselised much sooner than the UK did. Most of the post-war diesels from EMD, Alco and GE have been done to a high standard already and even the really obscure ones have been covered. Road-specific steam locomotives are probably the biggest gap in the NA market, but I'm honestly not sure the demand is there at the price they'd likely cost. As much as I'd love a B&M P4, I'm not sure I'd shell out over £500 for one plus p&p.

True in some ways.

Few British modellers are strict historical and operational accurate participants in the hobby.  There is a lot of the proverbial rule 1 and running what a like on both sides of the Atlantic.

3-rail O isn't anywhere near as popular as that.

Go into a full service North American hobby shop and the Lionel/MTH section was a small corner, maybe the same square footage as N - but given you fit a lot, lot more N product in that space tells the story.

But HO would be 90% of the store.

Yes, in a handful of markets there are stores that specialize in O, but that is still a rarity.

Most Americans simply don't have the space for an O layout - the basement empires are rare regardless of scale.

Not even close to being true.

EMD is very well represented, but still has gaps where the tooling is 20+ years old and not up to today's standards - particularly in switchers.

GE - distorted market.  Yes, the current stuff (GEVOs) is available and the Dash-9 and very soon AC4400 in quality models.  But the pre-1990 GE stuff is mostly missing.

Alco - lots of stuff missing or very old tooling.

And forget about Baldwin or Fairbanks Morse for the most part in model form.

Compare that to the UK where in the major diesel classes only a small number are missing modern tooling and they likely will be done in the next say 3 years or less.

Steam is a problem, for 2 reasons.

1) too many prototypes railroads doing their own thing, so beyond the few USRA designs there is nothing common to build tooling around

2) lack of a full range meaning people are scared off modeling steam.  With a couple of exceptions you get maybe 1 steam model per prototype, not enough variety to build a model railroad around - and even PRR/NYC/SP get less than a handful and are missing the more common and useful smaller locos.

Given those problems I would agree we are unlikely to see much of an improvement, though Athearn/Rapido/ScaleTrains have all expressed interest in US steam so things may change slightly.
