I have started the first of the two DVLR class 04's, with the aim of it making a guest appearance on Crinan at Darlington show in a couple of weeks, on loan to the Distillery....

After disassembly and removal of the glazing, the chunky Bachmann handrails were removed and replaced with Alan Gibson handrail knobs and 0.3mm wire.

As I'm using modified Kadee NEM couplers screwed to the original coupling bases, the coupler slots in the bufferbeams were filled with plasticard, apart from a small slot.

Just need to sand the bufferbeams down and it will be ready for a trip to the paint shop. The Bachmann wasp stripes will be retained so some careful masking will be needed for the grey and black livery application. Transfers for the cab side "Derwent Valley Railway" lettering will be produced on the PC.

The second 04 has had the handrail treatment now, being a little easier as the Bachmann cab handrails had never been fitted. Transfers have been run off the PC in slightly varying sizes and shades of red/ maroon. Not sure which will become No.1 or No.2 at this point, but both will probably be resprayed at the same time.

There are a couple of differences between the 2 DVLR Class 04s.

No.1 (ex BR D2298) had a full depth bufferbeam and was painted Grey/black after it arrived at the DVLR, but was later repainted in "faux LNER style" fully lined "Apple Green" (without wasp stripes), by the time the Passenger service was running in 1977-9. It was sold to the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre in October 1982.

No.2 (ex D2245) had slightly shallower bufferbeams, no front running plate footstep cutaway and air/vac tanks directly behind the front bufferbeam/steps rather than above the first wheelset, plus a couple of other small differences. It kept its grey/black livery until its sale to the Shackerstone Railway in 1978. Happily, since 2014, this loco now resides at the current DVLR at Murton Park.

So one of the locos will have work done to correct the running plate details, and bufferbeams trimmed to become no.2 but I'm not sure I want to go for the LNER scheme on no.1 due to the amount of white/black/white panel lining (with lots and lots of corners) needed; this livery is slightly later than my time period in any case but admittedly it would make a nice model......but no firm decision has been made yet.

I may have a go at cutting out acetate glazing for the cab windows too, as the standard Bachmann glazing isn't the best.

Those 04's look great, how easy was it to replace the bonnet handrails?  I'm pretty sure Lazerglaze do replacement glazing for the 04, I know they do for the 03.

Steve.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the Lazerglaze tip, will look into that.

The bonnet handrails slice off with a scalpel easily enough, followed by a small file and wet & dry paper to tidy things up. I used a marker punch to mark new holes as they are on the curve of the bonnet edge, which made drilling new holes easier. Some sort of jig would probably help to ensure the holes are drilled in exactly the right place but I carried on regardless to be honest. 6 handrail knobs were threaded onto each handrail wire (bent 90° at the other end to prevent them falling off!) And when they were all in place in the bonnet, a couple of strips of masking tape were applied to hold them in position while super glue was applied from inside the bonnet. The cab is easy if the Bachmann handrails have not been fixed as the  Alan Gibson knobs I used are a perfect fit.

Cheers,

Martyn.

Soooooo, having discovered that No.2 wasn't quite as ready for the paint shop as I thought, my trusty razor saw has been wielded to make the alterations required.

In a nutshell, buffer beams cut down by about 3-4mm, front steps removed and the recess in the running plate filled in, air/vac tanks removed from under the running plate and new ones fitted behind the front bufferbeam. The steps on these earlier machines were more "rungs" than "footsteps" so new ones will be assembled from brass strip.

After musing, I decided to see if the Bachmann front footsteps could be thinned down and otherwise "got at" to resemble something more like those fitted to No.2.

After much filing and sanding, and fixing back in place I'm happy with the result, probably better than I could achieve with brass strip anyway.

NOW ready for the paint shop...... I think!

Hi Martyn,

The grey livery makes the loco look quite different as do the buffer beam and step arrangements.

Do you print your own transfers and if so how do you do them ?

Gibbo.

PS. I've jut read the appropriate post above about transfers

Nice work Martyn, that grey is certainly different, quite modern looking but yet the 04 looks archaic. (Shape wise not the model) I did the same on my multiple working pair thinning down the steps, makes a huge difference. Ill have to find the pic of my dad and his mates on the front of one of the DVLR 04's back in the day.

Top job as ever

Thanks James,

strange to think it's 50 years since the real things started their second lives, on the DVLR, having already been withdrawn by BR.

Please do share the photo of your Dad by all means, would love to see it.:good_mini:

Photo below is the real DVLR No.2 back on the DVLR, albeit in BR livery, seen on a visit to Murton Park at Easter (I love the weather vane in the exhaust!). It shows the skinny front footsteps and air tank position quite well too.

Good stuff Martyn

Those 2 posts showing just the new hand rails are proof that you dont necessarily need to do a lot to give it a 'lift' above the standard model.

A lot of folk maybe don't have the ability to cut'n'shut etc. as well as you, but this relatively simple thing shows what can be done to make their model better.

Thanks for the comments, I admit to always having some trepidation at cutting a loco/coach/wagon into bits, even if they cost comparitively little compared to the latest RTR, although I find after the first cut, with the point of no return having passed, somehow the will for the project to succeed does help give some drive. But it is refreshing sometimes to go back to more basic detailing jobs, and to produce something a little more individual.

Evening Martyn, heres the pics i have from Dunnington in 1977, my Dad says apologies for the quality but they are just scanned pics from some pretty old pics, hope they are of some use for you.

Cheers

James

Hi James,

Oh yes, they are superb, many thanks for sharing them, please thank your Dad too. They are all wonderful but the second and third photos are particularly useful for me, as they show the Highlight Engineering buildings rather well, and the sign in particular. The fourth image with Joem and admirers standing on the concrete "Loading Hump" is reversed, but it matters not in this context.

The fifth photo appears to be approaching Osbaldwick Crossing at what is now the end of the preserved section of line from Murton Park.

The last 3 images are at Layerthorpe I think, nice to see No.1 and No.2 as well, along with "Churchill" in the first photo of course.

Fantastic stuff!

Thanks again,

Martyn.

Thanks James, any 70s images of Dunnington in particular, or DVLR in general are especially welcome, I do have a good number of photos of the current set-up from a couple of visits thanks.:good_mini:

I have been made aware of a very useful Railway photo archive (the Ronald Shephard collection) in Sussex County Councils archives (of all places) and covering most of the UK (including the DVLR and other gems such as the Lochaber Railway, much narrow gauge and other light railways). Well worth a look imo.

http://www.westsussexpast.org.uk/SearchOnline/TreeBrowse.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog&field=RefNo&key=Shephard%2f1%2f34

This hopefully brings up the index. Some of the photos have clearly  been published in books on the appropriate subject, but I suspect a lot have not. It's not the most user friendly site as they appear referenced under the Photographer name, being an archive and sometimes it seems down for maintainence but worth persevering for the subject matter.

DVLR No.2 has had a coat of Matt varnish and the glazing refitted temporarily. I fired Brian at Shawplan an email on Tuesday regarding 2 sets of Laserglaze, but have yet to receive a reply, he may be busy or on holiday and I'm not in a rush after all.....

20190822_131912.jpg.c18766e910c1a66508a86c0fb52c92af.jpg20190822_132159.jpg.6f80d3b83525481e6d057f4da1f73562.jpg

The cab handrails need touching up as they should be black.
