Would you believe I'm guilty of introducing the crackers containing the hats to my Mrs. S's family? They do enjoy the Boxing Day idea though! Hope that the new year brings many happy hours modeling and happiness in general. Regards Shaun 4

RMweb Premium Sasquatch Posted December 30, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 30, 2021 Got on with the other main wall for the L&Y warehouse this afternoon. Quite good progress too! Only thing which might not be apparent is the use of white brickwork. Same stuff, just snow white. Squatch. RMweb Premium Sasquatch Posted December 31, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 31, 2021 This warehouse build seems to be taking forever, believe it or not aprox.100 more bits have been added since I last posted. Mostly lintels, cornices, brick details and packing pieces. Scraps have been used to make the doorways... ...and Evergreen styrene strip for all the sills and lintel detail. All the gaps have been filled with spackling, clean up was initially done with a damp cotton bud. This was left to dry overnight with a further detail clean up with a fine chisel bit in the scalpel. A little sanding was also needed here and there. These distinct rows of detail at the top of each wall panel were tricky to make. Firstly, I drilled rows of 3mm holes in a sheet of .040" plastic card on my drill press. Then I cut the strips out to fit and scraped the taper with a Stanley knife. Lastly using the knife, the tiny scraps were removed below each hole. Not as tedious as it sounds. If I get these finished today, I'll tackle the end wall and stay up late with the paint and brushes. Squatch. 10
RMweb Premium Popular Post Sasquatch Posted January 1, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 1, 2022 (edited) This end wall has been a joy to work on today. Having gained experience on the other two side walls combined with the simpler construction of the original, progress has been swift and everything is much more accurate. Plastruct O gauge rough brick has been used for the stonework, with strips of brick below the windows as per prototype. To make the quoins around the windows, I dug out some left-over scraps of Slaters roof tile and spent about an hour snipping at the edges with a craft knife to make them. I'm not going to bother setting them in, so assembly of the end is underway. It's looking quite impressive already... Happy New Year folks. Wishing you all a return to normality during 2022. RMweb Premium Sasquatch Posted January 4, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 4, 2022 Another 100 parts made and fitted and we're ready for some paint! The pillars had to be hacked into with a sharp craft knife, so that some heavy-duty plate girders could be hashed up from plastic card etc. and inserted. There's some posh detail on the end too. I have paid more attention to detail here because it will be much more noticeable!... ...I think the hotel will be getting some posh stonework also. If I can get it looking half as impressive as it looks in this photo, I'll be chuffed! Squatch. Wishing he was staying at the Victoria for a week and doing some recce of the environs. 10
RMweb Premium Sasquatch Posted January 5, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 5, 2022 Things are looking a bit different now. I did have problems with the primer though. First, I did the side with all the windows by brushing on Humbrol #1. I didn't get on with this paint at all. It was gloopy and gave me a headache. For the end, it was a no brainer to dig out a cheap rattle can primer seeing as the windows have not been fitted. The can was old and the nozzle failed. For the other end I did mask up the windows and had to use a new tin of primer which was darker. All three sections were treated with a sandy mortar wash. All this has left me with 3 very different shades of brick. The brick colour is an acrylic mix of my own. The end had the stone colour dry brushed, also the brickwork and lastly a heavy wash of black-green. Closer inspection of this macro image shows that I'll need to dry brush all the brickwork again. Squatch. 10 1

RMweb Premium Popular Post Sasquatch Posted January 6, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 6, 2022 (edited) The warehouse sections have had another wash of black-green. I also finished any painting touch ups, removed all window masking and glazed and fitted the windows in the end. Before all that, attention was given to the lettering. I had planned to use Woodland Scenics Letraset style rub on transfers. These can be tricky to get straight and I was quite relieved to find that there wasn't anywhere near enough letters left on the sheet to do the job, so dug out a sheet of lettering found in a craft store a few years ago. These letters are sticky backed vinyl and although a little large, still fit. Just!!! A super macro image reveals their thickness which probably won't be noticeable unless one climbs on the layout and crawls across the yard. The dry brushed brickwork technique looks spot on though! Squatch. Can't make up my mind whether to tackle the rooves or the awning and lucams next. Edited January 6, 2022 by Sasquatch Is 14
RMweb Premium Sasquatch Posted January 11, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 11, 2022 (edited) The lucams. In hindsight these should have been made from thicker Evergreen siding, they would have been quicker to make for a start. The foam board really doesn't lend itself to the construction of smaller items! I also neglected to allow for glazing in their design. Everything was primed and I'm aiming for that "overdue for a repaint" sort of look. The awning was hashed up from styrene card and strip. It's almost ready to go together but first I need to make new floors for the upper storeys. The last ones ended up in the trash after I used a rattle can of paint/primer that I brought as a last resort because pure primer apparently is going out of production. A case of backward improvement if you ask me! Squatch. Edited January 11, 2022 by Sasquatch 9
RMweb Premium Sasquatch Posted January 12, 2022 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 12, 2022 Simple fix with the lucam glazing was to cut away parts of the back and fit it through the holes! That done, they received a wash of slimy black/green... ...but I fear I might have over done it a tad. Squatch. 12

Being of Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway provenance, it's not surprising. It definitely looks like brick in colour photographs. Trouble is, I can't make up my mind about the signal box base. It looks like brick in black and white pictures but there's so much grime on it I doubt it will matter how I model it! Regards Shaun

manna
G'Day Folks Looking at a close up of the lower part of the signalbox, I was struck by the similarity to the platform face next to the SB. Then onto the picture of the 'Jubilee' showing a good pic of the platform face, brick, I'd say 99% chance of it being brick. manna 4
