Weaselfish
I've got a really obscure question here: Does anyone know what the diameter was of the large outside steam pipes fitted to Fowler 3p 2-6-2s such as this one please? http://www.warwickshirerailways.com/gwr/gwrbsh2538.htm
RMweb Premium Michael Edge Posted September 14, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 14, 2016 I've not got this on my drawings yet but according to the drawing done for Railway Modeller in 1965 they are about 13" diameter. This series of drawings done by the LMS society was generally accurate and mostly based on measurements of existing locos.
John_Miles
I think they were originally built with inside steam pipes - if I am wrong, I will no doubt be severely castigated by following posts. If I am right, you could do it in LMS livery and avoid the problem.
RMweb Premium Blandford1969 Posted September 14, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 14, 2016 Yes they did start with inside steam pipes. You could always try the NRM, they have got a lot of Fowler 2-6-2 drawings. I have looked at the cross section drawing I got in error, but it is before they got outside steam pipes. I agree on the size of the steam pipes internally from looking at that drawing/ Unfortunately due to illness their turnaround time from order is about 8-10 weeks. I'm still waiting on a Stanier 2-6-2 pony drawing 7 weeks on (which I am not complaining about, it heightens the anticipation) Ian Rice did a drawing in the Railway Modeller as well. Weaselfish
Thank you for the replies everyone - it's much appreciated. I'm collecting models of types of loco which ran on the GWR lines in the West Midlands in the mid to late 40s, hence the link to 40002 even though it was only on loan to the WR for a short time. I'm sorely tempted by John Miles' suggestion to do mine in as-built condition as those outside steam pipes and wide chimney aren't exactly pretty. Decisions, decisions.... Thanks again all. RMweb Premium Blandford1969 Posted September 15, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 15, 2016 We would love to see your build, whatever. Yes ugly and steamed like an old damp sock, but interesting none the less.
LMS2968
They were known as 'bread vans' for some reason.
RMweb Premium Blandford1969 Posted September 16, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 16, 2016 Probably as they did not have enough power to pull one!
