RMweb Gold Ruston Posted November 9, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 9, 2016 I am looking for replacement gearboxes for a couple of my industrial locomotives. They currently have etched fold-up gearboxes that either came with the kits, or were bought from sources that I now cannot remember. I would ideally like to replace them with something more solid that doesn't rely on my building them absolutely spot on. I recently replaced one rough-running loco with a solid brass gearbox and Mashima 1833, from MSC Models and it has transformed it but MSC don't do anything smaller and the locos that I want to do have small 1624 motors with 3/16ths axles and do not have space inside for anything larger. Ideally 40:1 ratio. Can I have some reccomendations, please?
Jintyman
Hi Ruston, ABC do a very comprehensive range of motor/gearbox combinations, single, double and triple stage. Have a look on their website, or give them a ring. http://www.abcgears.co.uk/ No connection, usual disclaimer. Jinty
RMweb Premium Michael Edge Posted November 9, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 9, 2016 I mostly use Slater's gearboxes these days, all dimensions on their website.
MarcD
Be aware that 18xx and 16xx motor are like hen teeth at the moment. We are trying to redesign our kits as we are heaverly reliant on 16xx motor for our small locos. Marc
RMweb Gold Ruston Posted November 9, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 9, 2016 Thanks for the replies but the ABC gearboxes are huge things and not at all suitable for the kind of small 0-4-0 locos that I have. The same goes for the Slaters 'boxes.
Simond
Hi Ruston Just reading my GOG gazette and saw that MSC are offering a 3/16" axle, 40:1 aluminium machined gearbox with a Mashima 1626 at £48.50 to guild members. Looks tiny. Hth Simon
RMweb Gold Ruston Posted November 9, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 9, 2016 Thanks, Simon. I thought I'd seen such a thing at Telford but I wasn't sure now that it was MSC. I looked on their website today and there's no mention of it.
RMweb Gold Argos Posted November 10, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 10, 2016 I think that MSC gear boxes are now sold via Invertrains. I might be wrong though.....
Simond
Curious, it wasn't in their advert in the Gazette either. Herewith the item in the trade news section. Perhaps give them a ring. I think the iPixies have been at it again, sorry for the weird orientation... Best Simon
Ressaldar
Hi Ruston, you could give Steph Dale's gearboxes a look: http://www.euram-online.co.uk/stephdale/index.html Steph is also part of the Finney7 set up. cheers Mike
dikitriki
The SDMP gearboxes are available through Finney7. As far as I am aware, the smaller SDMP gearboxes are the smallest commercially available. However, they are self-assembly, and the OP indicated he wanted a machined gearbox. Gordon A
Hi Ruston, If you can modify gearboxes designed for 1/8 inch axles look at the HighLevel kits range. Gordon A
MarcD
I spoke to High level kits re adapting their gear boxes but they said that they were only for 18th axles and wouldn't be doing a 3/16th axle. Marc

Marc Yes, but is there not enough spare metal to modify the final drive out to 3/16"? Gordon A
