Duchess bible?

Hi folks

I've tried searching but don't really know where to start - so many opinions, and I don't have enough knowledge to sort the wheat from the chaff.   Is there a single volume that covers most bases?    A fairly general but accurate approach, and preferably with some colour pics would be enough to fit the bill.   Hornby's latest releases-to-be have rekindled my (layout-less) interest, but to keep swmbo happy, I'm going to try to limit this to a single volume.

There's a big exhibition up here in 5 or so weeks, so I'll hopefully get the chance to rifle through some of recommendations - forearmed is forewarned and all that...

Thanks

If it's just the basic information such as liveries and rebuilding dates you need, then the Wikipedia page seems to be accurate.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LMS_Coronation_Class

If you want a book that covers the class and is readable then I suggest the following three which are often found very reasonably priced. Although none of them will have any colour photographs.

Stanier Pacifics at Work by AJ Powell

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Stanier-Pacifics-Work-J-Powell/dp/0711015341/ref=sr_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1485124654&sr=1-5&keywords=at+work+ian+allan

Profile Of The Duchesses  by David Jenkinson

https://www.amazon.co.uk/PROFILE-DUCHESSES-JENKINSON-DAVID-CAMPLING-x/dp/B001MJPQY8/ref=sr_1_14?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1485125160&sr=1-14&keywords=david+jenkinson

The Power of the Duchesses by David Jenkinson

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Power-Duchesses-David-Jenkinson/dp/0860930637/ref=sr_1_30?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1485125305&sr=1-30&keywords=david+jenkinson

If it's detailed history and photographs you want then The LMS Loco Profiles No.11 The Coronation Class is recommended.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Profiles-No-11-Coronation-Class-Pacifics/dp/1905184468/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1485124366&sr=1-2&keywords=lms+coronation

They are also well covered in An Illustrated History of L.M.S.Locomotives: Standard Classes volume 5 by Essery and Jenkinson

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Illustrated-History-L-M-S-Locomotives-Standard-Classes-x/dp/0947971394/ref=sr_1_31?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1485125535&sr=1-31&keywords=david+jenkinson

If you can get hold of a copy from the original print run (over 30 years ago!), then 'Power of the Duchesses' did have some colour photos in the centre pages.

The Powell book is more of a technical treatise; the Jenkinson books were more enthusiast orientated - depends what you're after.

An even older book is the LMS Duchesses by Douglas Doherty (1973); there's some good reading in that (notably an unaided climb of Shap by 46255 with the 16-coach Midday Scot in 1953).

The Colour of Steam Vol.6 (Derek Huntriss, 1988) contains at least one colour photo of every member of the class (and the Princess Royals).

Also 'Stanier Pacifics'  Derek Huntriss (1992) 0-7110-2068-X ( but not every member of the class)

There is also the Irwell Press "The Book of the Coronation Pacifics" plus two 'Photographic Accompaniments'.

There is also a third photographic accompaniment in that series.

Also i read somewhere on here that the next RCTS volume will ve on the Duchesses, not sure if that's correct or not though.

There is also the updated version of this called "The Book of the Coronation Pacifics Mk2" by Allan C. Baker. Also an Irwell Press Ltd release.

It's twice as thick as the original, so could possibly be the first book + the 3 accompaniments all together but it does say on he cover. "New Improved, Upgraded, Amended, Enlarged and Better Than Ever". So may also include more.

I do like the Douglas Doherty book, a good technical study, as is J W P Rowledge, "The LMS Pacifics", published by David and Charles (1987), but this does not contain colour images.

For later colour images of the class I recommend "1964 - the Last Summer of the Duchesses" by Alan Castle,  https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Books/1964-Last-Summer-Duchesses-Alan-Castle/1909134112

Which is good value in my view.

all the best,

Keith

We can offer Looking back at Stanier Locomotives, which covers not only Duchesses, but also Lizzies, 8Fs, Black Fives, Scots, Jubilees, Moguls and his tank designs all in colour. There are twenty eight colour shots of Duchesses alone within the 96 pages, large format hardback on glossy art paper. RRP was £19.95 except we have the last few copies on offer at £9.95 via our website.
