LNWR BLOCK SIGNAL INSTRUMENTS

Were the LNWR  Block Instruments still in use up to the end of steam in LMR Signal Boxes.

Well after the end of steam - there are still some in use today at Crewe on the independents.

In the late '70's there were still a pair of brand new spare instruments in Soho S&T stores. A majority of the non-mas ex-LNWR boxes were using them in the Birmingham Division at that time. The BR standard Bakelite instruments (Tri-ang blocks as they were disparagingly termed), were hated by the bobbies.

Would there be two of these in each signal box, what are they worth today in decent condition, thanks for all replies.

Worth more if you know where they are from but for reasonable condition or better ca £125 plus (and plus could be another hundred) - like all things, depends on the day.

A permissive one from the Hereford area - in good condition - sold for £360 recently

Probably two, but possibly more and occasionally less (Termini)

One on a well-known site on offer at the moment but somewhat over-priced.

Last one to sell had a line name on it and went in the £200's. Another with no name didn't go at £235.

As Beast says very much on the day, Permissive ones have gone between £200 and £500 depending on condition and location of box.

That would be an 'emergency release' to be used only under certain circumstances, rather like the 'release key' for Sykes instruments. Probably removed by someone who wanted the spare bits for another instrument?

It's a release for the distant not showing normal.

What is the wiring connected to which  goes from the lower terminals into the tubes on the base.

They'll be the wires for connecting to the power supply and to the next box / indicators (for example the distant not normal release)

Anyone know where I could find the missing parts.

Here's one for the experts, mid 50's view of Anlaby Road, ex NERly Hull. The far instrument is a a ex LNWRly, yet the LNWRly never got within approx forty miles of Hull.

Wonder if it was replaced in BR days from stores and they just happened to have LNWR type (I think the LMS also made some Fletchers so it could be quite new)  in stock, the needles would match. (Great picture).

In a similar vein, Seacombe on the Wirral, a GCR terminus, had LNWR signals - main running line ones at that.
