RMweb Premium Nile Posted August 4, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 4, 2018 The final addition was some couplings. Some scraps of brass soldered to washers, these fit around the existing coupling mounts. Blackened, painted, smoothed, varnished and fitted. The loco is now complete, at least until I think of something else to add.
RMweb Premium Nile Posted August 5, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 5, 2018 I'll round off this tale of No.2 with some family photos. Here are No.1 and 2 together at Scarside. These were the original locos built for the Scarrdale Railway. Here is the Scarrdale Railway fleet so far. No.4 is actually the oldest one, I covered its conversion on my original workbench topic before I started a ng specific one: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/82968-niles-mostly-freelance-bodging-bench-a-detour-into-radio-control/page-23&do=findComment&comment=2539380 It's now been incorporated into the Scarrdale fleet, although with no company markings that won't stop it (or any others) appearing on other railways.

A superb fleet and a real credit to you. On a personal note no. 2 is my personal favourite but all 4 are really stunning examples of the best of 009. Cant' wait to see what you manage to achieve with the Bachmann Quarry Hunslet when they're available. HC Edited August 6, 2018 by happyChappy
RMweb Premium Nile Posted August 11, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 11, 2018 Now for the next loco in the Scarrdale fleet, which is of course No.6 . Scarrdale Railway No.6 This is an Andrew Barclay loco similar to Douglas on the TR, built using a Minitrains 'Boehler' loco and a Narrow Planet 'Barclayfication' conversion kit. This is the original model, with working lights front and rear. I decided to remove the lights and all their wiring, which meant removing the boiler. Things got a bit messy. With all those wires removed things improved. The conversion kit comes with a new 3d-printed cab, this is a trial fit.
Signaller69
More inspiring stuff Nile! Really like the way the Anglicising of these locos transforms them totally. Martyn.
RMweb Premium Nile Posted August 12, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 12, 2018 The cab roof and back sheet are etched parts. I've used some micro-strip around it to give the back sheet a bit more depth, the length of the roof limited how much I could add. New couplings are printed parts, they were glued to the buffer beams after filing them smooth. Some extra detail, I've added extensions to the front of the cab from plastic card. Topped off with some brass bits. One is a coal bunker, the other a tool/storage box.
scots region
Nile, your ability to turn a toy into a believable prototype with such seeming ease and precision is simply beyond compare. Watching your creation is a joy to behold, keep up the good work. ScR.
Ruston
I really like what you're doing here, Nile. From where did you get the shaded letters and numbers that you put on the bufferbeams of your locos?
RMweb Premium Nile Posted August 12, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 12, 2018 Thanks for the praise, some of that should go to James Hilton at Narrow Planet for designing the conversion kit. The transfers are from the HMRS sheet no.9 SR & LSWR locos & coaches.
Edwardian
Brilliant work. Very convincing. Look forward to the Barclay, but whatever happened to No.5?
RMweb Premium Nile Posted August 13, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 13, 2018 I was wondering when someone would ask about No.5 . It's in the works and will be up next. They count differently up in Scarrdale.
RMweb Premium Nile Posted August 17, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 17, 2018 I thought the centre of gravity of the loco was a bit too far back, near the rear axle. So I've added lead at the front, there are some empty spaces ahead of the metal chassis between the cylinders. The keeper plate was removed to access this. More will be added later in those spaces still empty. Putting things back together I've filled the joint in the boiler and given it an undercoat of paint. The steam dome has had some work on it, some filler around its top to give it a rounded edge. The holes for the safety valves have been re-aligned to be in-line with the boiler, two bits of plastic rod are acting as temporary plugs until the painting is over. The new chimney is another printed part from the kit.
RMweb Premium cnw6847 Posted August 18, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 18, 2018 The loco is looking really good. Good idea to add some weight to the front. When I added a whitemetal crew to my Barclayfication it tipped back and done a wheelie. I added plastic crew and that was ok.
RMweb Premium Nile Posted August 18, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 18, 2018 Plastic crew is a good idea, I have some ex-Airfix figures I can carve up to fit. Final details added to the cab, handrails and rain strips from brass rod. And then a coat of primer prior to painting. The surface still needs some smoothing in places, and that join at the cab front needs filling.
RMweb Premium Nile Posted August 19, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 19, 2018 After some filing and sanding I've got a finish I'm happy with. The final colour is BR green (Railmatch). And now for an experiment. I made a lamp iron from a bit of staple and glued it onto the smokebox. Take one headlamp (Springside I think as it's metal), drill a 1mm hole into its back and glue a 1mm magnet into it. The headlamp can now be attached to the lamp iron by the magic of magnetism. I want to see how well it works in practice before doing more locos.

I did a similar thing to my coaches with the lamp except I stuck the magnet on the inside of the plastic then the lamp just stuck the the rear of the coach. It was oo gauge though not 009.

RMweb Premium Nile Posted August 20, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 20, 2018 It works fine on a static model. I want to see how it copes with a run on a railway - will it fall off or end up at an odd angle, that sort of thing.
BernardTPM
Perhaps if the bracket were squashed or filed flat it would give a firmer mounting than a round section. Like the idea!
RMweb Premium Nile Posted August 24, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 24, 2018 After much trial and error I found a couple of ex-Airfix figures that could be shoe-horned into the cab, not easy as it's mostly full of motor. The fireman has lost half his head in order to fit up against the flywheel. The magnent below his left hand holds the cab in place, there is a matching one on the other side. Some other details have been fitted - the clack valves are printed parts, with an etched wheel on top and copper wire below. The sand pipes and hand rails are brass rod replacements, the original plastic ones broke. It's a tight fit with the cab on. The driver had to lose some weight in order to get up close to the motor. Even after that he still sticks out a bit.
Guest
Blimey, who knew just what a dangerous job it is working on your railway? I hope those men are getting paid well considering the horrific injuries they have sustained! - Alex

Signaller69
Nice work with the loco crew, they really draw the eye away from the motor/flywheel. They are nice figures to work with, very adaptable and they take plastic solvents, filler and paint well. Good value too.
RMweb Premium Nile Posted August 26, 2018 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted August 26, 2018 Onto the finishing touches and fitting the final details. There's now real coal in the bunker. The original whistle has been re-used, mounted on a bracket made from some microstrip, held onto the cab front with the help of some brass rod. The footsteps under the cab are etched parts from the kit, as are the builder's plates. It's been for a run around my friend's layout and the headlamp stayed in place, so that seems to work ok. I'll have to get some more lamps now.
