S7 scratch building

Now Christmas is out of the way perhaps I can get back to doing some modelling.

I have lost my mojo a little but a few new nuts and bolts on the end of the latest wagon I hope it will get me going again.

Also I have got my workshop back after my better half used it to store all the presents for our grandchildren along with all the other stuff that arrived with Christmas.

I am reminded by a friend the my aim was to build 25 wagons last year and I only managed 21.

As I only started in April so technically I have a couple of months to go.

The goal for this year was to start the layout and build a few locomotives and finish the ones already started.

I have amassed plenty of wheels and gearboxes but there are still more planned.

One of the joys of getting my workshop back is the things I have found. I was looking for some Cambrain drawing but only found a box of my L.N.W.R. Dia 16 brake vans kits. There are 6 in total. As I don't advertise and I only made them as a favour for friends and because I wanted a few for myself I am not sure how to sell them.

Those are H-section cast iron spokes, not MW double-boss wheels (also used by others, e.g. Hunslet).

Looks like an 0-4-2PT, known as “Bessel tanks” (due to the trailing truck) and also as “dock tanks.

Dare I suggest a short paragraph and a photo in the S7 Newsletter (which goes to press in 3 weeks time)...

Sir Douglas, I will probably do a K or L class as I have made 4 or 5 old I class in the past in finescale. I made the one with the funny roof about 30 years ago, it's named Preston and worked on G.C.R. London extension. The chassis was made from a S&D kit with a home made body. The same method was used on the painted one also shown here but was painted by Ian Rathbone after it left my hands.

Wagonman, thanks for the suggestion I will be in touch.

John, yes it's the same dock tank you saw all those years ago. I wasn't happy with a couple of aspects of the build so I pulled it apart to rebuild it. The chassis was fine but I made the cab out of to thin a material.

I do love a Manning Wardle, or two. I must get on with mine...

I have a question for those more knowledge than myself on L.N.W.R loco's. I have been doing a bit more work on my scratch built chopper tank but I also have a kit from Laurie Griffin for the same loco. I have been using a drawing done by Mike Peasod in Modelling Railway Illustrated from Feburary 1995.

I believe there were a few things that not 100% correct because there was a follow up article in the L.N.W.R society journal Vol 1 number 10 March 1996 by Peter Davies. There was also a drawing that appeared in the Engineering from December 1887 based on a general arrangement engraving that to was in the journal.

Unfortunately this drawing is not very clear on the brake shaft under the cab floor.

I have made the v hangers on both frames but when I look at the etches for my kit they appear to have one side on one frame and the other one in the middle.

Can anyone put me right before I get to far with this one and before I start the kit.

All the photos I have are all to dark to see any details to help me with this.

John, yes I am sure A.B.S did a chopper tank.

I am still unsure about the location of the V hangers that hold the brake shaft. I have looked at all my books and photographs without success. I was hoping someone would have come up with the answer before I get to far with the build.

I have done a small amount of work on my chopper tank. Scratch built the piston rod covers ( I think that is what they are called ) on the bottom of the smoke box. Must remember not to use to much power on the Scale Hardware nuts and bolts. The R.S.U melts them very quickly ! The close up photo show the small gap on the front of the smoke box which will need filling.

I think those projecting parts are the housings for the spindles of the slide valves. The slide valves sit in a V-formation between and above the cylinders. See for example the left-most of the sections of a 5'6" 2-4-2 Tank that form fig. 66 in Talbot's An Illustrated History of LNWR Engines (OPC, 1985) - the clearest drawing I could find of the inclined slide valves which are something of a hallmark of Webb's designs - most people put them vertically between the cylinders, which restricts cylinder diameter and/or valve volume. Not that Webb's cylinder or valve dimensions (for his simple engines) were in fact greater than those used by his contemporaries.

Thank you for the information Compound. My knowledge on these matters is not very broad.

I have the cylinder covers to make next. I am not sure how much you will be able to see once it's all done.

I am also missing the rivets on the edge of the smoke box were it meets the footplate.

I have made a couple of tank fillers inside the cab. I have still to make the handles. The back head is the wrong one for this class and will be changed before I get to the painting stage.

Compound, thank you for your kind remarks.

I went to the Bristol O gauge show over the weekend. I took the chopper tank and 6 wagons to run on the Scaleseven society test track. I was more than please that they worked as good as I hoped they would.

I meet lots of old friends including Adrain Swain and met many new ones.

I bought a few bits as well as ordering a Lee Marsh G.W.R. saddle tank. It is getting better for us S7 with the available of ready to run loco's and wagons.

I have done a small amount of work this morning on the chopper tank. At this rate I might get this finished this year and start the second one that will be built with a full cab.

Also thanks must go to the gentleman that gave me a lift back to Swindon in his car. I am sorry to say I have forgotten his name

( happens a lot these days ) but I was very grateful.

I have started on the backhead which is a mixture of hobbyhorse and Laurie Griffin parts. I had better get myself some pictures before I get to far. I am sure I will have some somewhere.

A little more work done today. I have made the front springs removable to be able to unscrew everything to ease painting. I have drilled and tapped them 12 B.A.

I have added a few bits this morning to the backhead. The cab injectors were from Hobbyhorse which I believe have now ceased trading which is unfortunate as I will require two more packs, one for the second chopper and the other for the dock tank.

If I keep doing bits and pieces everyday then with any luck I will have this will be finished and I can start on the second one.
