I don't know if this info is of any use ? but from my notes, these are the remaining Coal Sector, BR Standard Brake Vans used in nuclear flask traffic 1989 and 1993, together with their locations and workings where known..

Great, thank you.

Just came across this layout - very impressed as this was a favourite spot.

Did a lot of rat chasing in 86 & 87 as they approached their demise. Made several trips to the branch and have fond memories of hurtling down narrow lanes in the fog to get 25904 on Target 91 in Feb 1987. Less fond memories of the trip back in sunshine when looking at the shear drops by the side of the road!

These are some old scans of that trip (3.2.87) and also Tamworth Castle on 3.3.87.

I must rescan these and quite a few others including 912 on the flask when time permits.

Regards

Mike

Hi

I lived at Glanypwll  in 1983 - 1987 most winters working on Ffestiniog Railway. And recall the trip working and the early morning runrounds in the North Western Yard, the sound of the arriving 25 was often a wake up call. Followed by the crash of buffers as the van was fly shunted.

Great pics

Thanks Mike and great photos. I especially like 904 at Maentwrog Road in the fog, very atmospheric.

Would love to see any other photos you have including flask trains from that period as at some point in the future I will be adding another board to depict Trawsfynydd nuclear flask loading point.

Another board for the flask loading point will give another level of interest for you.

Think you have done a great job so far and given us some great pictures.

Thanks Hugh, this thread has turned out very interesting from a prototype point of view. Lots of interesting information and photos.

A few of Maentwrog Road. Most of my black & white negs were never printed. Colour trannies were only used on sunny days. One of the irregular Inspections of the line passing Maentwrog Road goods....

Really good thread this, thoroughly enjoying it.

Out of interest, what was the explosive from Cookes used for and what happened when it stopped running as the works seemed to have closed quite quickly from what I've heard.

Cheers

Hi Cookes made a range of commercial explosives over the years. Dynamite among them - they supplied to FR for the tunnel at Dduallt.

The closure came with an in site explosion, IIRC in 1988 or 1989. I was at Tan y bwlch station at the time and we felt the ground shake! and then all the sirens.  Site now a nature reserve  and track side area developed as trading estate.

I recall restrictions on tonnage and mixing types - did see one train with three vans but only one was the norm. Convoys from plant were subject to separation distances between vehicles and one night in pub remember hearing about rollickings when three lorries - they were only 10 ton 4 wheelers were found in convoy.- I guess they would have made a bit of a crater it it had gone wrong.

great pics and a great model thanks for sharing

One of very few I have not seen of yours Larry, 3 P way gangs and one from the S&T maybe (Sherpa van) . The 2 Permaquip trolleys were based at Llanrwst and Gaerwen and were in use when the major spot re-sleepering was being done c1993-4

Reminds me Robert of Bunny asking me to collect some from Penrhyn, to save him having to go on the bus. He and Martin at the time were not drivers. An interesting visit to the works.

Some of the sleepers were rotten before the re-sleeping, particularly in the dip and sharp bend at the bottom of the run down from Meantwrog road.
