Ian's 7mm workbench - recent photos

Unfitted LMS van in progress. I actually find taking photos quite helpful - you immediately see what needs more work: the camera never lies and all that!

I've had some odd results using black transfer patches just for the 12T and tare which all turned white, except the bit covered by the number transfers, when I weathered it all. I agree with a suggestion elsewhere that its something to do with the matting agent showing up but I've not done anything different to normal. I suppose it is possible the weathering reactivated the body grey a bit and the texture of the patch transfers attracts it.

I was interested to compare with and without the added strap.

Whilst checking numbers for a BR conflat A, I realised that the clasp braked ones were only built at the tail end of my window. So I will do this as a mid 70s for my occasional diesel running and build a morton BR version. I have an unbuilt Slaters kit so could swap brake gear, but have grown to like Dapols underframes and have one which will be freed up when I convert a 5 plank to an LMS version. So initial plan was to graft the Slaters body onto the Dapol underframe.

Comparing pics though, they are so similar it will be easier to just modify a Dapol GWR conflat and sell on the unmade Slaters kit. Some of the solebar detail is different but I could live with that even if I don't sort it.

Aside from filing out the gap in the body side and raiding Slaters for the chain loops, I need to change the W irons to the BR type. I do have spare W irons from Slaters van kits which come with 8, but I want to see if I can convincingly modify Dapol's.

This is easier than I expected. I've kept a master insert and it's easy to knock them out now. The top above the spring is a compromise but you won't see in the shade there. Both my fillers have gone hard so will crack on with the body till Tuesday.

Body sides filed down and buffers swapped with a Mogo. Now for the fiddly bit. 12 chain rings per side. I'm hoping Slater's spares are cheap enough that I can pinch the ones from my kit but I suspect I'll end up making them.

I forgot to say the slightly earlier BR diagrams (or the Swindon built batches?) had GWR ratchet brake lever guides per the Dapol model, whereas the 1/069 had the BR type. I needed one built pre '57 anyway so this will be a 1/067.

I made chain rings out of fuse wire, sawing along the top to separate and release. The two missing ones will be securing a container. I suspect the "replace chain pocket lids" transfer wont fit so I might have to prise two back off.

Pretty much done. I had to move a couple of the links on the other side to make room for the number, and forgot to put them back on before weathering and the very last thing i did was to snap off a vacuum hose. Also I've missed the white ends on the brake levers!

I bought some spares from Gaugemaster for my 73. Glazing, which comes without the orange stripes and also some cab handrails. The handrails sent are clearly the wrong parts but they are refusing to accept it at the moment. Also one of the windows is scratched but I haven't even bothered to raise that given the issues with the handrail.

I'm much happier with how it looks minus orange anyway!

If I can remove the number it will become E6012 which had a grey stripe and the double arrows, but if I'm in any doubt it will stay as it is. I'm tempted to do it as brand new. This and my 33 will work as a 1966 cameo - or they would if I actually had a layout!

Any links to the 14xx autogear components and Shepard vac and steampipes please, I fancy adding them to my own especially the vac pipe. I can find PR Components with an address in N. Ireland which I assume is PRC.

Sun was falling on a spot behind the workbench yesterday so took a few shots of anything to hand. Dapol brake van now has replacement Slaters lamp irons. A Mogo with the buffers off my conflat, a better shot of the BR conflat conversion and 4552 which I must finish off!

Another LMS van having strapping and bolt heads added. This one will be an unfitted version: I hadn't really appreciated until I got a book recently detailing when things were retro fitted how much unfitted stock there was c1956/1957

I was seeing double whilst staring at this which made this something of a challenge - even more so before I stopped and painted the straps black!

Having painted a black patch on the wooden body, I put the tare transfer on but it just didnt look right. I decided to move it to the metal end instead but I'm far too tight to waste a transfer and hadn't done a patch. So I got a sharpie out, drew a rough patch and popped the transfer straight on, tidying up later. Will probably do that instead of painting patches in future!

I did exactly the same using a Sharpie and then varnished over the transfer (actually the whole wagon). Unfortunately the black Sharpie ink seemed to 'bleed' into the white lettering after a while.  Hope it doesn't on yours.

Ray.

interesting. If I do it again I would varnish the sharpie before the transfer which should stop that perhaps.

Unfitted van pretty much done. New strapping and rain strips and a livery Dapol haven't done yet. My cat wandered past, said she was hungry and then pointed out the paint has come off some of the new rivets when i removed the weathering wash. To be honest i cant remember if I bothered to prime them - I suspect not. Will touch them up at some point although barely shows to the naked eye.

I might fix the roof down - I can't un-see where it isnt quite sitting.
