The 4 ton wagons looked a bit bare so I finally got round to getting some Woodland Scenics large grey talus.  A bit like smooth river rocks so I crushed them in a thick plastic bag with a hammer to give nice jagged edges from the quarry crusher.  The plan was to line each wagon with pressed in cling film, cut and insert a floor of 1mm styrene, fill with crushed talus and soak with the usual ballasting mix of PVA and water.  However this never seemed to dry, just puddled.  So I exchanged the styrene for foam board and therefore had less content to put in; also used smaller glue quantities and let each application dry before the next.  I had to adjust the fit on some that were tight but now they come out easily enough with tweezers.  In monochrome photos the stone looks light so I don't plan on painting them.  All I really need to do now is weather the insides for when they are empty.
